Children of the Night

Et voilà que nous sommes déjà au mois de novembre avec ses nuits plus longues et plus froides propices aux rêves ténébreux. Avec l’hiver à l’orée, notre environnement tout à coup se transforme et notre soleil du jour devenant plus rare, il nous mène à fantasmer créatures et démons peuplant les ombres nouvelles de la nuit. Cette nuit justement, c’est le rituel qui fête ce passage qu’on appelle Toussaint ici, Halloween ailleurs ou qu’on appelait Samhain encore autrefois. En d’autres temps un peu plus récents, Bram Stocker faisait, au milieu des cris de loups et des ululements de chouettes, s’annoncer son célèbre comte Dracula au pauvre Jonathan Harker comme ceci : « Listen to them — children of the night. What music they make. »

Une musique inquiétante car interprétée par l’esprit comme telle, orchestrée par de déviants aristocrates ou bien par nos musiciens favoris et c’est sous cette houlette qu’Elsa Kuhn il y a quelques jours me dit : « Viens on fait une playlist de toutes choses sorcières et magiques ! 13 titres chacune, un nombre parfait ! ». Alors nous voici à deux — chapeaux et balais réunis — pour vous proposer de notre chaudron commun une concoction faite de nos petites musiques de nuit préférées que nous espérons à la fois vénéneuses et délicieuses. Attention, la potion est éclectique : de son grimoire savant, Elsa nous propose des charmes élégants allant du fameux Nosferatu post-rock de Slint à la transe des zombies politiques de Fela Kuti en passant par les guitares ensorcelantes d’Opalet quelques bizarreries 60’s telles que Steve King, et quant à moi, telle une araignée facétieuse, j’y ai jeté quelques curieux chats noirs (Broadcast, Pink Floyd) accompagnés des vocalises de quelques-unes de mes prêtresses préférées (Kate, Siouxie, Tori & Jenny). Dans un éclat de rire diabolique malgré tout bienveillant, nous disparaissons dans un nuage de fumée ! Bonne écoute !

Si le reggae n’est pas le genre qui m’a attiré en premier, la musique jamaïcaine était déjà dans mon ADN avec les Specials, Madness et le revival ska anglais début 80. Plus tard, le Top 50 rendait impossible d’échapper à Jimmy Cliff, UB40 ou quelques clichés. Mais le déclic se fera bien plus tard, à la fin des années 90, grâce aux formidables compilations Dub Chill Out  (Music Club) ou 100% Dynamite chez Soul Jazz, qui ont permis la découverte d’un continent ignoré aux multiples et passionnantes ramifications : du Shuffle des années 40 au Dancehall et Digital des années 80 et 90 en passant par le Mento, le Ska, le Rocksteady, le Reggae, le Dub ou le Ragga.

The Godlike Genius of Mayo Thompson

Si le nom de Mayo Thompson ou encore Red Krayola vous sont inconnus, vous avez sûrement un disque produit par ses soins dans votre discothèque. Voici une sélection non exhaustive de titres de Red Crayola (devenu très vite Krayola pour cause de procès avec des célèbres pastels), des morceaux issus de sa période britannique, Geoff Travis l’avait invité à produire les premières sorties de son label Rough Trade (The Fall, Cabaret Voltaire, Kleenex, The Raincoats…), ses albums avec le collectif d’artistes Art & Language et ses multiples collaborations… De retour aux États-Unis, il entame une longue collaboration avec le label Drag Citydepuis les années 90 et travaille avec (entre autres) David Grubbs, John McEntire ou encore Jim O’Rourke. Cinquante ans après la sortie de son premier album, Mayo Thompson est toujours très actif, son dernier disque date de 2016 et il se produit régulièrement sur scène.
