"Come on Tiffany, breathe for me girl!" nurse Jade proclaimed as her latex clad hands interlocked fingers and resumed pounding into Tiffany's tiny (and now bruised) rib cage.

"She's been down for over 20 minutes ..." the other nurse sheepishly replied. The room was silent but for the artificial EKG beeps and tiny huffs of air escaping Tiffany's lips as a result of Jade's relentless chest compressions.

"Ok, let's hit her with 5ccs of epi"

The nurse reaches out to Tiffany's limp outstretched arm and plunges the syringe into her bloodstream. Her arm dangles like a rag doll off the edge of the gurney as Jade's compressions gradually circulate the drugs to her failing heart. After a long silent round of 30 compressions the EKG perks up with some erratic activity. "Ok looks like she's back in vfib! Let's charge paddles to 200!"

The defibrillator unit begins its high pitch squeal as the coils prepare to shock. "Ok paddles charged, everybody off!". Jade backs up and her hands lift from Tiffany's electrode laden chest. The nurse navigates the nest of leads and wires to settle the paddles on the defib pads surrounding her fluttering heart.

"CLEAR!"

What little life is left in Tiffany's body seems as if it's been coaxed out of her as the electricity surges through her - arching her back and tensing her arms sharply before quickly falling limp again. Her once fluttering heart is now still .... triggering the asystole alarm and flatline on the EKG.

Jade quickly reaches her hand to the nape of Tiffany's neck to search for a pulse and gazes up at the monitor. After a few brief seconds .....

"Beep ..... beep ..... beep"
