Two falconers in De arte venandi cum avibus, ca. 1240. The practice of falconry began in central Asia and was brought to Europe by Frederick II, Holy Roman Emperor, in the 1200s. It was a particularly popular activity among nobles. They were the only ones who had the time and money to spend on it, so falconry became a status symbol.
