Because my toxic trait is I'm an Anders apologist in the sense that every time someone complains about Anders for being too annoyingly neurodivergent or too flirty or The Absolute Worst or whatever.... Then I apologist for him a little more.

Over the years, I've had blorbos who do much worse stuff without people expressing THIS much fixatey dislike over their entire character concept.

Varric Tethras as a character is wild. He calls everyone by a nickname. He writes trashy romance novels. He’s a prolific liar. His family got them kicked out of the dwarf kingdom for rigging dwarven Wrestlemania matches. He has fingers in literally every crime ring in Kirkwall. He lives in a pub. He named his weapon after his absent girlfriend with whom he has a restraining order. He denies his involvement in keeping the wizard police away from his friend’s illegal magic Urgent Care. He’s the mom of the friend group. And he does this all while being four feet tall

I may have sussed out the basic construction of "Taarsidath-an halsaam"

Iron Bull rather colorfully translates it as “I will bring myself sexual pleasure later while thinking of this with great respect,” but Qunlat is a notoriously efficient language, so I figured you could pare it down and find most of the words and/or grammar that make it up.

Taar appears to have connotations of “recall” or “retrieve” (e.g. Taarbas are the ones who retrieves equipment from the dead after a battle, and “bas” means “thing”, so the Taarbas “Retrieve things”)

We encounter the -an suffix as part of “basalit-an” or “foreigner worthy of respect”, so I think it’s reasonable to say “-an” is the part that Bull is translating as “with great respect”.

So that gives us [Recall]sidath-[with respect]. I can’t find any Qunlat that I feel strongly indicates what “sidath” means, but I’d put money on -ath being some kind of future case conjugation. This would make sid a demonstrative pronoun (perhaps a truncate/elided version of “asit”, as in “asit tal-eb”, “It/that is to be”). So that would make it [Recall][this (event)][(I) will]-[with respect]

On to halsaam. “Esaam” means “can be found in”; given that many other Qunlat words that start with “e” are or could be a form of “to be”, I’m going to say “esaam” is the third person subjunctive form of “to be”– subjunctive rather than indicative, because “can be found in” has connotations of being somewhat dependent on someone’s actions, an event that has not yet occurred. The phrase it occurs in, “Anaan esaam Qun (Victory is in the Qun)”, is a sort of blessing, which tend to be subjunctive. So we take -aam and/or -saam as how the subjunctive is conjugated in Qunlat.

Since the action being described is a possibility/has not yet occurred, it calls for the subjunctive tense. Therefore, hal or hals is probably the Qunlat word for “masturbate”, and halsaam is the subjunctive form. The “later” is implied in the use of the subjunctive.

[Recall][this (event)][(I) will]-[with respect] [masturbate][(I) will {subjunctive}]

The more literal “Common” translation would be: “Should I masturbate later, I shall recall this event with respect.”

Anyway, what I find most interesting is that as far as I can tell, Qunlat doesn’t seem to conjugate differently based on the “person” (i.e. first/second/third singular/plural). The first person subjunctive uses the same suffix as the third person. Possibly a reflection on how Qunari society is treated as a singular unit, not individuals living together? Then again, English does it too (most people don’t even realize English technically has a subjunctive tense; it’s all so samey. The present subjunctive of “to be” is just “be”.)

Yes, that’s the part I find interesting in deconstructing a fictional language’s expression about jacking it to dragons.

ashara is funny with a DS sith inquisitor bc she's so accidentally dark all the time and DS inquisitor can give her a "gotcha" and a knowing look

but ashara with LS sith inquisitor is HILARIOUS bc they're BOTH just stumbling around. LS inquisitor essentially kills ashara's jedi masters by accident and looks at this sad little jedi whose life they wrecked like "shit i guess i gotta adopt her now"

flash-forward two months and their little adopted jedi padawan is burning with righteous rage and preaching the idea of peace via violence and the SITH is the one that has to tell her she's going too far. probably thinking "oh no. well now i've gone and ruined her." 🤣

Thoughts on KOTFE because hey I’m finally playing it now:

-Idk what ancient sea witch hell being Darin De Paul made a Faustian pact with to have the perfect voice, but I’d like to personally thank it because any time that dude is handed a villain role he absolutely kills it. 10/10. He’s so good as Valkorion

-Speaking of, Valkorion’s whole design is just 👩🏻‍🍳💋👌 The whole Zakuul royal family is really fun to look at individually, but also altogether because the family resemblance is there without being too pushy about it idunno how to word, I just think they’re neat

-I’m playing on my Smuggler btw

-You’d think this whole concept wouldn’t fit, and yeah there are a few narrative times where I’m like, oh, yep, they definitely had the Jedi Knight in mind for this bit, but? Big but? Smuggler actually works out pretty good. And what can I say, I find the concept of two generations of angry royal force sensitives playing tug-of-war with what is basically just some guy with a ship to be very funny and therefore very entertaining

-Understandably, my Smuggler talks to Valkorion’s ghost less like an ancient entity trying to take over his body and more like someone trying to cheat at sabacc. “Valkorion is amused” pops up way more then expected. The planet devouring Sith ghost has a sense of humor

-Really love how SWTOR spread its romance wings with this one and went full Dragon Age 2 with it. Everyone’s fair game. (Flirt) option is my Smug’s ultimate weapon, frankly

-Had my first genuine impasse when I had to decide between Koth, Theron, and Lana as romance options (an impasse of my own decision and making, but still). Was doing quantum physics, bending the laws of time and space, ripping open my third eye while I went hrm, but would this fit my smug’s MO?

-Finally decided on Lana. 1) because it’s Lana, and 2) this Smuggler having a weak spot for women that can crack his spine like a disposable glowstick confirmed

-I’m really excited about this bc I had to go through all the character class story arcs first (just for personal completionist sake) and if I had to accidentally hurtle off one more Balmorran cliff face because those elevators take too long I was gonna uninstall the game.

-Gripping the game by the lapels and shaking it vigorously begging it to let my character wear Koth’s outfit, PLEASE

-They went hard designing Zakuul, from its assets to its lore, and idk how I’ll ever be able to go back to vanilla planets after this. Zakuul stronghold when
