the  duality  of  theodore  bagwell  is  his  innate  desire  to  inflict  pain   while  wanting  so  deeply  to  experience  love  .   based  on  his  upbringing  ,   the  two  are  intertwined  .   what  is  caring  if  not  expressed  through  hurt  ?   his love  is  inclined  to  be  shown  by  control  ,   by  possessiveness  and  physicality   —   whether  that  physicality  is  wanted  or  not  bears  no  weight  .   when those  he  loves  show  any  semblance  of  disrespect  ,   or  behavior  suggesting  he  himself  is  not  wanted  ,   or  more  importantly  ,   needed   —   he  will  force  others  into  submission  ,   by  any  means  necessary  .   whether  or  not  they  instantly  comply  is  the  basis  for  judgment  of  peoples’  worthiness  in  life  .   not  just  within  his  family  unit  ,   but  in  the  world  at  large  .   unwavering  submission  is  caring  ,   all  love  is  suffering  ,   blind  obedience  is  loyalty  .
