Artist, John Buxton
visited our class today and shared his thoughts on many subjects, his background, his art, and also walked around spending time with us offering feedback and suggestions on our work.
Our class consists of artists working in oil, acrylic, oil pastels, charcoal pencil... just about anything goes. It’s a great group that I’m so happy to be a part of. I’m in my second 8 week session, with 3 classes left in this term and I’m already thinking about what I want to do next.

I have to say that portrait painting in classical realism is as challenging as I imagined, but so rewarding. According to John Buxton, drawing is the foundation for painting and any art. It’s something I would like to get better at. Like anything, trial and error, practice makes perfect, so my homework this week is to just draw eyes. Lots of them. Maybe I’ll practice some ears too....

Our instructor , Christine Swann, portrait artist, will be drawing from a LIVE model at Spoiled Chics on Friday nite during the Sewickley gallery and Art Walk from 6-9pm. If you are interested in sitting for a charcoal portrait demo, please email me: [email protected]

Week 3: face your fears
Adding layers of transparent glazing techniques, such as GREEN to her face, for color depth and luminescence.
I had to just trust my instructor that GREEN is ok!😳 Next week: more layers of color, like stained glass
Medium: water based Oil paint, galkyd

2nd week: Classic Realism
Starting with the underpainting and followed by the Grisaille method, showing the different planes, contrasts of dark and light, my first portrait project continues. I’m humble by the many artists in my class who help each other out by sharing their knowledge and expertise. This is such a challenge, and I have learned that even though I have felt that this is way beyond my abilities, if you just TRY, you can do it. So today, try something new! Try something that you fear you could never do. Because you can.

The Art of Living
"The Master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play..... He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence in whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he is always doing both." - Zen Buddhist Text
I started this blog over 7 years ago and Ive decided to revive it. I can’t wait to see how it evolves. Follow me on tumbler.

I’m so excited to be starting my second session in Oil Painting, Classic Realism with @christinaswann-blog at Sweetwater Center for the arts in Sewickley. Starting with selecting the right photo, drawing a few thumbnail sketches to determaine layout and light/dark contrast, to sketching in paint the first layer on gesso board, I’m so ready to enjoy the journey. I’d love for you to follow along with me....

Who inspires you?
Forbes has released their annual list of “The World’s 100 Most Powerful Women,” and alongside political hot shots like Angela Merkel and tech savvy ladies like Marissa Mayer, there’s a few gals in the fashion industry that made the list, among them Diane Von Furstenberg, Anna Wintour, Miuccia Prada, Angela Ahrendts, and Gisele Bundchen.
But there was something a little surprising about the list. Diane Von Furstenberg was placed at number 33, a whopping 18 slots higher than Anna Wintour, who was placed at 51. We agree with Fashionista’s assessment that Anna Wintour is probably more powerful — because ya know, she’s the Anna Wintour; the woman who makes the final decisions on what we see in Vogue (aka the “Fashion Bible”), the woman who founded a worldwide shopping initiative with Fashion’s Night Out, the woman who hosts fundraising dinners for presidential candidates!
Anyway, check out some of the other leading ladies who made the list:
- Lady Gaga #14 - Marissa Mayer #21 - Diane Sawyer #23 - Queen Elizabeth II #26 - Nancy Pelosi #28 - Arianna Hufffington #29 - Beyonce Knowles #32 - Diane Von Furstenberg #33 - Jennifer Lopez #38 - Shakira #40 - Angela Ahrendts #45 - Ellen DeGeneres #47 - Anna Wintour #51 - Angelina Jolie #66 - Miuccia Prada #67 - Sofia Vergara #75 - Tina Brown #77 - J.K. Rowling #78 - Gisele Bundchen #83
These women are not only powerful, but inspirational. Who Inspires you?

I find that the great thing in this world is not so much where we stand, as in what direction we are moving. --Oliver Wendell Holmes
The hardest thing to do is to get started. The next step is to KEEP GOING. If we just just take it one step at a time, and just 'show up', all day, everyday, you can't help but keep on keepin' on! Easier said than done.
