Step into a world where the Twin Towers graced the skyline, and the pulse of disco filled the air, an era where anyone could afford to live, work and play in New York, and every block boasted a panoply of eccentric characters and street corner legends. Even so, living in the city was far from easy: the financial crisis, high crime rates, and damage from the blackouts led to a widespread belief that New York City was in irreversible decline and beyond redemption. By the end of the 1970s, nearly a million people had left, a population loss that would not be recouped for another twenty years.
