Last week my college hosted an international day for our students. It's was a lot of fun learning about the many cultures represented at the college as well as eating loads of traditional food. In the pictures you can see: -my name in Arabic calligraphy done by a student -Loqaimat (basically a doughnut that is topped with date syrup) -Henna! -Me being dressed up in a traditional bride abaya from Yemen. Traditionally, the woman would wear this when she moved from her family's house to her husband's.

We are so behind in posting! In February we had the amazing opportunity to visit friends in Jordan. It was an incredible trip and we loved every bit (especially floating in the Dead Sea!).

My Arabic tutor had us over for a huge Palestinian feast! I'm convinced she needs to open a restaurant. Or at least teach me how to cook these tasty dishes. From the top: makhdous (eggplant, fried bread, creamy sauce), moghlooba (rice, chicken, eggplant, potatoes, spices), the spread, and fattoush (salad with fried bread and pomegranate dressing). Hungry yet?

Two weeks ago we were fortunate enough to volunteer with Dubai Cares' "Rebuild Palestine" campaign. We stuffed hundreds of backpacks (of 50,000!) to send to Gaza to help students who are returning to school. We loved being able to love our global neighbors in such a simple way!

The weather has been absolutely beautiful these days and we realized we need to find ways to be outside more. So last weekend we had a picnic on the corniche and took a stroll. We found beautiful mosaics, took in the lovely skyline, and saw a yacht race. It was awesome!

Vienna!!! We had a really great time on our Christmas escape. Vienna is really lovely and we lived exploring all the Christmas markets. So festive!

National Day is coming up! To celebrate 43 years, there have been festivities all over the city. Last week my college put on a ton of activities. I got to "ride" a camel, play dress up, attend some ceremonies, and browse a museum students put together. We even got into it and put a flag in our window! Happy National Day!

We are loving being in a bigger city and having so many food options! We went to the recent food festival and feasted on some a-mazing treats. Some highlights: vanilla cronut (our very first cronut), TNT shrimp, and decorating cupcakes with a celebrity baker. A great, filling time!

Yesterday was Flag Day here and my college had a flag raising ceremony. The students were super excited- waving flags, clutching red and green and white balloons, wearing scarves with the faces of revered leaders. During the ceremony there were speeches, flag raising, and gazillions of balloons released. Now the students are eagerly awaiting National Day in a few weeks. (Again many apologies for my poor quality photos. It is generally not okay to take pictures of the faces of people here, so I had to try to capture the moment without faces... Tricky!)

I recently started going to Arabic tutoring a few times a week. I've been learning lots and am thrilled to be understanding more (chwey chwey). But another benefit? My Arabic teacher loves to bake so I'm always rewarded by something delicious. That's my kind of studying!

So I'm not the best photographer, but I did want to share a bit of work life. This is where I spend a good bit of my time... For better or worse. :) #work #officelife #teacher

First I must tell you that this commercial is probably my favorite commercial and correctly displays my level of excitement for Pumpkin Spice Lattes.
Wendi, also shares this similar affection for this craft beverage.
Since living in the Arab world (now in two different countries), We have yet to see this seasonal delight grace any Starbucks we've been to.
Every year we come back to the states during the summer, but we leave to go back within weeks or days of the Pumpkin Spice release date. So Wendi decided to write Starbucks and tell them how much she would love to see Starbucks bring PSLs to the gulf.
Then just the other day we walked into a mall, and I stopped in my tracks when I saw this.
I can't imagine how ridiculous my face must have looked at this site, but it was pure bliss. Thank you Starbucks for listening to your customers even if Wendi's email wasn't the catalyst for this event.

Thanks to Renee we got to experience all the delicious goodness of South Florida. In 24 hours we devoured Colombian, Venezuelan, Argetine, organic and vegan food. And an ice cream sundae as big as your head. Delish!
