“Oh my god.” despite her coming to this event for over a decade, Emma still couldn’t believe how amazing it was. So many people from around the world, it got bigger and better every year. “I still can’t believe Rihanna’s here again, like… god what a babe.” she sighed dreamily.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Did you get her autograph?” As Monster Jam got bigger, the musical event became more and more stressful for Colton. This year he had perfected his grin and bear it approach. Not touching a drop of alcohol and always remaining on alert but at least trying to have somewhat of a good time as well. “Or get her phone number. Text her for movie nights, become her best friend.” He joked.

This was strange. Kate had spent a long time mourning Colton. Mourning the people she thought she loved. She’d also spent a long time being angry with him, too, her survivor’s guilt had left her feeling an overwhelming amount of emotions, going through the stages of grief more times than she could imagine. It had been thirty years. She’d had time to heal. To forgive him for everything that had happened, though she never thought about whether he’d do the same were he still alive. Her stubbornness had come between them so many times.
Of course the idea that Colton was alive had never dawned on her.
Her laughter felt strange, she shook her head and sniffled, trying to keep the tears at bay, despite that they were tears of happiness. “M’ real– m’s’real as they come.” Kate, too, didn’t break contact, her hand pressed firmly against his cheek, almost afraid that if she did, she’d wake up from her strange dream, back in Canada. “Someone found me–” she answered his question quickly, as if it happened days ago and not decades ago. “A witch, I owe her my life still.” She spoke to the woman who’d healed her periodically, it had become a friendship that she’d never let go of. “I was as good as dead without her.”
Finally accepting the fact that if she let go he’d still be there, she dropped her hand, but didn’t move far away, her smile still as bright as ever. “Canada,” was her only answer, laughing at how absurd it sounded, someone who;s roots were so embedded in the South ending up there. “I wanna know about you– we got a lot to catch up on.” She looked down at his file. “What do I need t’tell ya? I reckon you might owe me lunch.”
Tumblr media
Kate didn’t seem angry at him at all. All he could do was wait for the other shoe to drop, for her to remember that he was always arguing that they needed to join the fight that caused the death of their pack. But for now, before the blame that he knew he deserved came, Colton would take full advantage of the happy reunion. The impossible had happened. “It’s still going to take me some time to really believe that.” He’d come to terms with the fact that everyone from the Kennedy pack was gone. His hopes had been dashed too many times to possibly allow them to go up again.
Thirty years. Kate had been alive and out in the world for the last thirty years.
“I’m glad that she did. I mean, I guess that goes without saying.” It was a miracle. All he could hope was that after three decades apart she could forgive him for all the things he’d said during the war, for what he’d done. “I escaped from the humans that grabbed me. By the time I got back…well, you already know.” Everyone else was gone. There’d been nothing but a large grave. Their friends and family had been taken from them. All Colton was left with was the painful realization of just how wrong he’d been. They’d never had a chance of winning against the humans.
Clearing his throat, he forced himself to focus on the present again. Letting his hands fall back to his side when Kate dropped her hand. The file had been long forgotten, tossed on the table and left to sit there once he’d seen her. “Oh—yeah, it’s supposed to be going through your background, asking questions to make sure the story lines up. Lunch instead sounds good. I’d rather hear what you’ve been up to from you than read it in a file. I’ll show the best place in town go. I’ve been here since ninety-seven.”

Elena grinned at Colton. “You are right, technically I don’t know, but I like to think I won fair and square.” It was always nice to see the man joking around. “I rarely give pitty,” she began before chuckling, “but for you, I’ll make an exception. Only to show you that I can still beat you even if you start before me.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“I guess you’ll find out tonight if I manage to pull off a win.” She was an original werewolf. Colton didn’t pretend for even a fraction of a second that he could match her speed and strength. It was the fun of it that counted and why Colton took on the challenge. “Alright, alright. I won’t take the pity start. Then when I win we’ll both know it was fair and square.”

Helena looks up from her book as the door opens, ringing the little bell above it. “Hi, welcome to Wicked Good Books. Can I help you find anything?” she says automatically. It had been a quiet morning, and she’d done the paperwork she needed to do. Really, anyone coming in right now, even if they didn’t want to buy something, was a welcome change of pace.
Tumblr media
Almost as soon as Colton had the door open Aurora squeezed past Colton and went rushing into the store, heading straight to the children’s section to look through books. He had no doubt they’d be leaving with no less than at least five or six. “Anything you suggest she’s going to want. If you want to boost your sales for the day feel free to give her options.” He laughed softly, watching his daughter.

A smile spread on Melody’s lips when Colton sat down. “Well, i’m pretty sure i’ve yet to be able to convince you to try the sriracha honey chicken, no matter how many times I say it’s good.” she commented, leaning her hip against the bar counter. “So I would highly suggest you give that a try before it’s gone forever. But…other than that i’d suggest the summer ratatouille. You can bring some home and convince Aurora to have some veggies by telling her it’s exactly like the Disney movie.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Sriarcha honey chicken it is then.” Colton gave in quickly without arguing against trying the item on the menu he hadn’t tried yet. “At the end, I’ll get the ratatouille to go and tomorrow I’ll give it to Aurora. That’ll work perfectly, she’ll want to have it for every meal until she finds a new favourite.” There were far worse things for Aurora to want for every meal. Ratatouille was better than chicken nuggets. “And it gives me a break from cooking for two nights so its a win, win.”

The faintest of smiles spread on Melody’s lips as she moved to take over behind the bar. It was still early in the day so most people sitting there were just ordering food without any alcohol but she was prepared for whatever came her way. Or, at the very least, she was going to try to be. It was rough but finding herself back in a routine was honestly the best thing that she could do. She pulled out a little notebook and went over to the first face she saw without a plate. “Hey, know what you want? I can give you the Summer specials menu if you like as it’ll only be around for a few more weeks.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even though Colton knew the menu like the back his hand by this point he still looked over it when he sat down. “What’s left that I haven’t gotten a chance to try yet?” Things had been relatively quiet, giving Colton time to make meals at home. On the nights when he didn’t feel like cooking or when Aurora was at friends for the night he took the opportunity to pick food. “There’s got to be a couple different things left still. Whichever one you think is the best I’ll take.”

The full moon - it was something that werewolves both dreaded yet anticipated at the same time. At this point in Elena’s life, it was was something as simple as eating breakfast. So when the full moon was upon them, it really was not a big deal to Elena, rather she looked forward to it. Being one with the wolf was engraved within her being, so any excuse to turn into the beast within she enjoyed. During this time, she liked variety and who she changed with during the full moon really depended on her mood. Today, she chose to be with Colton. It wasn’t the first time the two of them had decided to wolf out together, yet she enjoyed it at all the same.
“Just try to keep up this time.” ( @coltondeforest )
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Being in a pack meant having others to be with during a full moon and it was something Colton was always grateful for. His early years of being a werewolf had been completely different. Alone. Then again right after the war. Now, he was just happy for every full moon with the Greyson Pack. Aurora was safe being babysat for the night. “How do you know I wasn’t playing it safe so you’d drop your guard?” He joked, smiling at her and then turning to look at the moon. “Do I get a pitty head start?”

For some strange reason she couldn’t quite put her finger on, this was strangely nerve wracking. The interview process in and of itself had her spinning wild scenarios in her head like she was a suspect in a police procedural and Kate half expected to find someone coming through the door with a polygraph that she was sure she would fail. Despite the fact that realistically, she had nothing to hide.
Of course, she understood why the process was in place, though she’d never dealt with the Clave directly, Kate could certainly relate to wanting to remain hidden from those who wished harm on them. It was necessary, it made sense.
Still– the waiting, it was making her antsy. She’d gone from standing up to sitting down so many times that when the door finally opened and she’d just sat down again, she jumped back up as if startled. Though, when she noticed the familiar face she certainly was startled.
Kate was speechless. Completely and utterly so as she stared into the face she was sure she’d never see again. Her ears were ringing and she felt like she’d been doused by ice water and she heard his voice and still she wasn’t sure how to reach. All she could see was Colton, Colton DeForest stepping closer to her and then she was in his arms. She was in his arms again and it was this that snapped her out of whatever short fugue state she’d gone into.
As he embraced her she reacted, balling up her fist to the back of his shirt and burying her face in his shoulder just for a moment. There was a deep desire to keep holding on, but she had to make sure, she had to make sure it was really him and so she pulled back hesitantly, cupping his cheek with the palm of her hand. “Are you real?” Tears formed in her eyes and when she blinked they spilled over, it was all she could do to keep all of her emotions in check. “Is it really you?”
Tumblr media
From the moment he’d seen Kate, Colton wasn’t sure if he blinked. The paranoid feeling that if he closed his eyes for even a split second she would disappear completely refused to fade. Hollow Grove was a town that had the tendency of bringing people together after years of separation, he’d experienced it first hand already, but this was different. This reunion seemed impossible. Kate was gone, their entire pack had been lost. Colton had come to terms with that decades ago after years of struggling with the mistake that he’d made.
Once he had his arms around her the thought crossed his mind that the absolute last thing she would want was for him to touch her. Colton was part of the reason why they’d lost their family, he’d always argued that they needed to join the fight to protect their right to exist. But when Kate didn’t pull away or push him off his hold around her tightened. Loosening only when she started to pull back.
A breathless laugh left him at her question. Was he real? Was any of this or was it just a dream? Resisting the urge to pinch himself he nodded, his head dipping just slightly. Not moving enough to break the contact of her hand on his cheek. “I’m real? Are you sure you’re real?” A million different questions formed in his mind. There was so much he wanted to ask her. But where to even start? He didn’t move away or break contact, needing to physically keep his arms loosely wrapped around her to reassure himself that he wasn’t imaging her there.
“How? The last time I saw you...” He trailed off, images of that day coming flashing back. A part of him had clung to hope when he’d escaped the humans that she had somehow survived her injuries but all he’d found was large grave. The remaining supernatural’s he could find in the area had told him no one else from the pack had been seen alive. Every bit of remaining optimism that he’d kept was crushed. “Where’d you go? What’ve you been doing all this time?” Colton wanted to ask a million other questions but he limited himself, stoping himself so she actually had a chance to answer.

“You mean Sheriff Teddy Bear?” Luna chuckled, taking another sip of her drink. What a good man that guy was. “He’s always so serious because he’s always hurting, but I wish he wasn’t. He cares about the town and everyone so much. And oh my god, have you seen him with Aurora?” She made a face that still didn’t quite show how much her heart melted at the mere thought of them. “Colton’s such an amazing dad. If there was anyone ever meant to be a dad, it’s him. Maybe he should be Sheriff Dad instead.” Luna zoned out for a minute, thinking of all the times she’d seen him look at Aurora with heart eyes. Then she was back with a gasp, having just remembered something. “I have the worst craving for some of his barbecue. Do you think he’d fix the biggest burgers right now if I asked nicely?” She looked around the room as if he’d poof into existence on command. “I should try to find him.” She stayed firmly planted in her seat. “You know…he helped me when I first came to town. Being a wolf is hard, but he made it seem…easier.” She couldn’t quite form the words to say she looked up to him. They seemed to catch in her throat every time she tried. “I feel safe around him. He’s like a big can of mace. You don’t want him in your eyes.” She grinned, swaying in her seat a little. She’d do anything to keep him safe, too. Did he know she’d keep him safe? Not that she could do much, but damn if she wouldn’t try. After a moment of thinking, her brows furrowed. “Did he bring out the burgers yet? I’m starving.” @coltondeforest

“She’s probably going to be sleeping more than well tonight.” Jonathan stated amusedly while approached Colton watching his energetic daughter enjoy every second of all the Founder’s Day carnival had the offer. “I thought I saw both of you on a carnival ride a few minutes ago. Unless you’ve done them all already.” He mused, even though Aurora had already moved on elsewhere. “Bet she could beat them.” Jonathan proceeded to motion to the kid making a poor attempt at the game.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Oh yeah. This energy high is going to turn into a sugar crash and she’ll be out cold for the rest of the night.” From the way Aurora was hopping around, he expected her to burn off the sugar in the blink of the eye. “We finished one, she was having a hard time picking the next and then she saw this game and b-lined right over here.” Jonathan’s last comment was the thing that finally tore Aurora’s extreme focus away from the game. “I can, I can!” It was all the encouragement she needed to nudge herself to the other station and reach for a ball to join in on the game. “Now you’ve done it, no one else is going to get a chance to play.” He joked, elbowing Jonathan gently.

A last-minute request for a change had Colton filling in the interviews for the afternoon without any time to prep beforehand. With a small set of folders in his hands, he gave up on reading while walking, deciding that he’d retain more of the information if he focused on it after he sat down. Colton already knew there wasn’t anything that had stuck out in the background searches that been a cause for concern, a reason why it hadn’t been a problem for him to step in to conduct an interview he hadn’t spent closely reading through the files for. A potential list of questions had already been prepared, to start he could simply work his way down the list and compare the answers to the notes.
Flipping open the folder, he stepped through the door while reading through the first page. The short and sweet summary of general information that would be enough to get him started. “I’m Sheriff DeForest, I’ll be—” His introduction cut off, the words catching in his throat the instant his eyes scanned over the name. Once, twice, three times he read the line over. Expecting the words to change, that he was just imaging it. Colton was delaying looking up, stalling the inevitable. He’d look up and it would be someone else. Someone with the same name, around the same age she would be, from the exact same place. A coincidence the universe had thrown at him as a joke.
It felt like he’d been staring at the page for hours but only a few short seconds had ticked by when he finally tore his eyes away, daring to look up. And it was her. It was Kate. He blinked and she didn’t disappear. “Kate...” He took a step. Slow and hesitant. Careful in case this all was a hallucination and nothing was real. Nothing fell apart, the ground didn’t suddenly open up. And in two more long strides, he’d crossed the room. Before he could stop himself and wonder whether or not this was the best thing to do, the right thing to do after their last conversation, he’d pulled her into a hug. “You’re alive, you’re here.”

“There are great things in life that were the product of a mistake,” Elena countered. But as she watched the young Aurora continuing to bounce around, she smiled and quickly added, “But this mistake might result in a very late night for you.” She sounded a little bit too pleased by that fact.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“This mistake is going to be funnier for her and for everyone else watching than it’s going to be for me.” It wouldn’t be the first time Colton dealt with a young child having a sugar-high and it wouldn’t be the last. “If she doesn’t stop jumping soon I don’t know if she’ll make it another thirty minutes before she tries to take a nap and play games at the same time. Her mood when she’s tried but also doesn’t want to leave is what I’m dreading.”

Colton‌:
Tumblr media
“I’ll give you the whole victory tour including a full recap of the game. Play by play. You’ve got an entire afternoon free to listen, right?” Joking while the subject was light-hearted and not focused on the more serious matter of the clave was easy. Colton was still feeling the highs of winning. The real world, the fact that the clave was still a threat and Vince was still missing, was never far away though. And the shift back to a more sombre tone came quickly. “As long as you’re not yelling, you won’t keep her up. When she’s asleep she sleeps like a rock.” Colton may have been exaggerating slightly but in the end it was the truth that Aurora would stay asleep even if Jonathan came over to talk. “I hope so. The sooner we get him back home, the better. It’s already been too long. We should’ve been able to find him the day after the blood moon.” He shook his head, disappointed in himself and not anyone else that was searching. “We won’t stop looking anytime soon.”
“For a victory tour and a winning game recap at the station? No question.” Certainly further validated his decision to have skipped out on the match at the festival. He’d much rather hear the recollection and see the station’s trophy in person by far. And especially at present, Jonathan would take the temporary distraction amongst the ongoing aftermath. Thought of course in general, he appreciated his friend taking the time out of his busy sheriff duties to speak to him. “Alright, then I accept both of your offers.” It would be best to discuss increasingly confidential matters at Colton’s home instead. “I understand, trust me.” Jonathan earnestly stated, having been experiencing similar turmoil since the night of the blood moon with the setback that’d cost him not reaching his sister in time. Exactly what had prompted searching and asking trusted individuals for any information on those clave members involved.  “I’ll make sure to stop by, and will do all I can to help find Vince too.”

Eric had been hearing the hype about the Founder’s Day activities for weeks now, and as a still relatively new resident he had yet to experience all that was the oh-so-greatness, and so he had come down to experience and thrive in all of its glory. So far he had been doing his best at keeping his knees soft as one too many children had already walked or rather run full speed into his tall frame. “Damn, what are they feeding these kids, redbull vodkas?”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Almost. Something very similar. Cotton candy and funnel cake, it gives them all the energy of redbull and vodka with none of the alcohol.” When the effects of the sugar wore off Colton knew that Aurora would have a sugar crash. “This is before she gets her hand on any popcorn, soda, various candies.” His daughter wasn’t listening, meaning he could list possible different things she’d get without her overhearing and expected even more sweets. “The upside is that when this wears off she’s going to sleep well.”

Ryan grinned, pulling back slightly to heft a baseball at an empty bottle of milk. The glass container toppled over to his smugness and the teller motioned to a stuff animal of his choosing. “Which one do you want?” he asked the young girl bouncing at his side before turning back to Colton. “Unless you got her drinkin’ an energy drink, I’d say you’re doin’ a fine job. Nothin’ wrong with lettin’ ‘em have a bit of fun every once and a while.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The excited bouncing stopped long enough for Aurora to point to the big, fluffy, blue puppy toy that was hanging at the top of the stand “That one”. She looked up at Ryan with a huge smile, her eyes wide and practically sparkling with happiness. “You’ve got a new best friend now, Ryan.” Colton knew Aurora would be going straight up to Ryan with stories about the adventures she went on with her new toy anytime she saw him. “What do we say?” Colton’s attention turned to Aurora, his head dipping in a small nod promoting his daughter to say something. “Thank you.”
