i think the reason avatar the last airbender has remained so firmly embedded in our cultural consciousness even over a decade later is because it posits such universal questions as, what if your friend really wanted you to kill his dad for him..... like straight up murder him.... (he really does not like his dad) but you. you are just a little boy...............

An illustration I did for the Avatar the Last Airbender fanzine, Tales of the Four Nations! I was assigned the Water Tribe, but rather than focus on the Northern or Southern Tribes, I decided to give the Swamp some love.

I really tried to lean into my lineart for this piece. It was time consuming but overall worth it I think.

ending the discourse rn katara might be the ‘mom’ but she’s also the middle sibling and demon little sister specifically. sokka is the dad but also the grandpa and the big brother and occasionally toph's mother. aang is the little brother and also the grandpa and toph’s twin. toph is aang’s twin and katara’s and zuko’s little sister and sokka’s daughter. zuko is katara’s twin and also her big brother and also aang’s and toph’s big brother and also occasionally the mom. suki is everyone’s aunt. appa is the mother but also the big brother and momo is the father but also the little brother and aang is also appa and momo’s middle brother. zuko is their shared child.

We all talk about how horrible Ozai was for, y'know, burning off a quarter of his son's face but what really gets me is that after he burned off a quarter of his son's face, he then informed Zuko that he was banished from the Fire Nation. I just - how do you think that conversation happened? Did he say it immediately after, when Zuko was likely passing out from the pain? Did he just announce it to the whole room after Zuko had collapsed? Did he call a freshly-bandaged Zuko into the throne room? Did he tell Iroh? Oh, god, what if he passed along the message through Azula? What if it was Azula who told Zuko that he was banished? And what if Zuko didn't believe his sister, not at first, because "Azula always lies"? Christ, I need a hug...
