should clarify that velvet ants, while a member of hymenoptera, are actually wasps and not ants. the females are wingless and many are brightly-colored like this one :D
[id: two somewhat blurry photos of a velvet ant (dasymutilla vestita), a small insect with a velvety orange-red body and a black thorax and legs. in the first photo it is walking on asphalt and in the second it is running into some grass. end id]
spotted a velvet ant over the weekend. ive never seen one before so i was excited! sorry for the photo quality. she was fast

i’m a visitor assistant/naturalist at my local nature center in the rocky mountains! it rules and i love talking about it
posts abt wildlife (specifically in the rockies but also just in general), animal husbandry, entomology, gardening, various crafts/art, taxidermy and related fields, and probably anarchism sometimes.
i have 3 dogs (i post about my puppy moose a whole ton), 3 gerbils, and a crested gecko. i’m also super passionate about livestock and sustainable farming, and most of the year i keep bees!
asks are always open <3 thanks for stopping by!
