Once given the go ahead, Noctis stepped inside the room and closed the door behind him. It must be nice having a room to himself – a perk of being such a highly regarded First, he supposed – something to look forward to if, when, he reached First Class. That was what he was aiming for, of course. It was what most of them were aiming for. Some never got further than Third though.
"You didn't wake me," he assured him. If Sephiroth hadn't stopped by his room, Noctis would have probably slipped out to get some fresh air eventually anyway. At least this way he'd be able to use his time productively. "It's partially that, partially still coming down from the adrenaline."
Noctis had almost died, after all. He probably would have if Sephiroth hadn't been there. He'd spent a while just laying there in bed, stewing on that fact. He'd been reckless and stupid an had almost gotten killed for it. Stupid decisions like that wouldn't get him promoted. They'd get him killed.
"I don't mind going through the reports with you now. May as well get them out of the way, right?" His eyes wandered over to the reports in question. "What do you need me to do?"
Tumblr media
He was scrawling away at a few extra details when he heard the knock. He should regret having possibly stirred the 2nd, but for the moment, he was thankful. "Come on." was his first response, no need to converse through a door. He waited until Noctis had entered before properly responding to his question.
"Just fine. Only reports. I apologize if stopping by your room woke you. I had a few requests, for you to fill out a few things in the report, but it can wait for the ride back to HQ." he explained his intention smoothly, giving Noctis options. But, it would certainly help this be finished tonight if he could fill in the necessary gaps. And it was then he really looked over the 2nd and noticed how weary he seemed.
He quirked his head, and then tried not to chuckle. He was amused, but sympathetic. "I assume the shared quarters are giving you a small amount of trouble...?"
There were quite a few reasons he resting on his own, like he intended to tonight. This being one of those reasons. He never did well with shared quarters. At least, not with very many groups.

"Like I said, just waiting for the next ship to depart – something I assume you're doing too if you're out here."
Noctis lowered his arms, but he made no move to reach for a weapon. He'd meant it when he said he didn't want to fight. That said, he knew how it probably looked. They were on the run, and there he was still in his damn uniform. It made sense that she'd be cautious.
Tumblr media
"Look...I don't want to be on their radar any more than you do. I'm not exactly here on orders." He paused, considering how much he should say. The old proverb was that an enemy of an enemy was a friend. Maybe that applied here. "I always thought that ShinRa was doing good but I was there when the plate fell. All those innocent people, dead. I don't want to be a part of that. I can't."
Tifa had been walking around, trying to gather some intel while the others checked on gear and supplies, when she caught sight of the soldier.
Immediately, her eyes narrowed and she held up her hands, ready to defend herself if needed. With knowing that AVALANCHE was being hunted, no one associated with ShinRa could be trusted.
Tumblr media
Watching him carefully, her gaze narrowed. "What are you doing here then?" she asked, cautious.

Noctis knew what Obi-Wan was doing. He was trying to be the voice of reason, bottling up his own feelings to make things easier on Noctis. He knew that they hadn't put an official label on what they were, but they enjoyed each other's company. There were moments of tenderness that would be out of place for a Prince and his guard.
It wasn't some fling he could just get over and move on with his life. Getting married, especially to someone he didn't love, felt like he was betraying both himself and Obi-Wan. It also wouldn't be fair on his wife-to-be.
Tumblr media
"But what if I'm already in love with someone else?" It was the first time he'd ever said it, however indirectly it might be, but it was true. He loved Obi-Wan. He wanted to be with Obi-Wan. "Give me a reason not to go through with it. Say you don't want me to. Say you want me to stay with you. Please."
If Obi-Wan could do that, Noctis could talk to his father and convince him to call off the wedding.

Noctis had always assumed that he'd marry Luna one day. He was the Prince of Lucis, she was the Princess of Tenebrae. Their union would bring their Kingdoms closer together, and the general public seemed very invested in their relationship. Any interaction they had was blown way out of proportion.
He loved Luna, but he wasn't in love with her.
Instead of falling in love with the Princess like everyone expected – like everyone wanted – Noctis had fallen in love with his Shield. It seemed his Shield felt the same way and that was enough of a reason for him not to go through with it. Luna would understand. She'd be happy for him. His father too. All the man had ever wanted was for him to be happy.

"Can't beat a good nap," he agreed with a smirk. He certainly spent a few of his own vacation days napping. He'd been trying to get out and explore more though lately. He thought it would help him figure out who he was – who he was, not who the original was. The only problem was that he still found himself being drawn towards things the original would have enjoyed. "Must be weird though, seeing how things have changed. How old are you, anyway?"
For the most part, he just enjoyed listening to Xigbar talk. The man was always talkative enough, but this was the first time he'd been so open with him. The first time he'd really talked about himself. It was nice, so aside from interjecting with the occasional question, he just listened to him talk.
"A clocktower, huh?" Noctis asked, dipping a sushi roll into his soy sauce before popping it into his mouth. He thought he'd go crazy living in a clocktower. Aside from the common room, the castle was actually pretty quiet so he couldn't really imagine what it would be like.
Tumblr media
"What was it like, your home?" He was curious. Noctis had fond memories of Lucis, but they weren't really his. "What did you do before you joined the Organization?"
Xigbar thought as much, working with the Organization did not leave a lot of time for exploring just for the hell of it so of course Noctis found this place on vacation. He mostly just asked to try to make conversation while they waited on the food instead of sitting in silence.
Tumblr media
β€œI usually spent my vacations taking a well deserved nap.” He said, β€œOr just checking in on the worlds, seeing how they’ve changed…”
When the food arrived, Xigbar did not pay much mind to what went into his mouth, or whether it was from his plate or Noctis’, it was all quite tasty. He talked about the different worlds he had been to and some of the bizarre characters he had observed within them, and as he drank more and more of the sake, Xigbar also started talking about people he had known lifetimes ago and a world that no longer existed. β€œYou’d think that living in a Clock Tower that huge would do some serious damage to my hearing, but oddly enough, I don’t actually remember the bells being that loud. The mechanics though, I swear I sometimes still hear those gears turning.” Xigbar rambled, not entire sure how he had gotten onto the topic of Daybreak Town’s Clock Tower.
Must have been the sake.

Sleep didn't come to Noctis as easily as he thought it would. He supposed it wasn't helped by his roommates all coming into the room at different times. He managed to get an hour or so before giving up and had spent the last half an hour staring up at the ceiling. He was still awake when Sephiroth stepped into the room, or rather, into the doorway. The man's silhouette lingered as if he wanted something, before slipping away.
Noctis waited a couple of minutes before sitting up. Sephiroth might have decided to turn in for the night, and if he had, Noctis would go for a walk and get some fresh air. If not, he'd check in on him and see if there was anything he wanted.
Quietly leaving the room to avoid waking the others, Noctis stepped out into the hall. He could see the light creeping out from under the door of the man's room, so he figured he was still awake. Either he couldn't sleep, or he was still busy. If it was the latter, Noctis figured he could help him out. He probably wouldn't get to sleep for a while anyway.
"Sir?" Noctis asked with a light knock on the door. "Everything okay in there?"
Tumblr media
It was some hours later, more than most of the other cadets expected as some of them came filing back to their rooms and were talking about how Sephiroth was finally making his way back.
He checked in with the few cadets and SOLDIERs that intercepted him, but it was clear by the look on his face and folder of paper work in his arms, that he wouldn't be winding down like the others. He gave them a last reminder to get rest tonight, before ascending the Inn until he found his room. He put the papers away there, but first, he had to gather some extra information.
He soon found where Noctis rested, after knocking on the door and opening it, only to find the other might be asleep. He actually hesitated, despite the noise he'd already made. He had questions about the assailants he face when they separated and if he'd seen anything else of note, but...perhaps he could save those questions for the ride back.
With a silent sigh, he turned and exited the room before returning to his own. He'd be at this report for at least another hour or so, so his light was kept on, but the door stayed shut.

If Noctis was bothered by the way Petras rolled his eyes eyes at him, he didn't show it. He barely spoke to his so-called siblings – he just about tolerated them. Since he'd been paired with Astarion, he was closer to him than the others, but that didn't make them best friends. Noctis had only been one of them for a short amount of time, but he'd already learned that it was every spawn for himself.
That didn't mean that Noctis liked the way Petras was talking to Astarion. His brother might only have helped him to avoid drawing Cazador's ire onto himself, but he had still helped bandage him up. He owed him, but he didn't think Astarion would want him to defend him. He was perfectly capable of defending himself.
It did make him wonder what Cazador would have him do though. Would he parade him around as a waiter, turning the son of a nobleman into a servant? Or would he have him make use of years of hunter training to put on a show against one of his siblings?
He waited until Petras had lost interest in their conversation before turning his attention back to Astarion.
Tumblr media
"Lovely family we've got, huh?"
Petras rolled his eyes in Noctis' direction. How did the kid not know? Wasn't it Astarion's job to educate him? They were paired together for hunts now. But Petras was feeling generous if only to scare the little shit even more.
Around them a few of the others were preparing. Aurelia, the tiefling, was dressing herself to be a waitress at the event. Violet could be heard clearing her throat and prepping for something. She had been a bard in life, but Cazador prevented all the spawn from singing. Even her. Unless he wanted her like he did tonight to entertain his guests with her songs.
"The master is staging a fight between me and Leon." It was why Petras was barely dressed. He only wore pants and shoes this evening. "Has his friend set up for bets. He has jobs for us tonight. Maybe you'll get lucky and be assigned to fight."
Petras glanced up, knowing Astarion was in the top bunk. "Or you'll be like our brother whose only asset is a pretty face and how well he whores."
"Fuck off, Petras." Astarion hissed at him.

Noctis didn't mind the way Titus was speaking to him – if anything, he actually found the man's frankness refreshing. Unlike Noctis, the captain was somebody who deserved respect because he'd earned it. Noctis might be the heir to the throne, but in terms of experience, Titus outranked him.
So Noctis had always treated him with the same respect he gave Cor and Clarus. He valued the man's input even if he didn't necessarily like it. Besides, Drautos had a point. Noctis just didn't want to admit it.
Letting out a soft sigh, he slumped in his seat. There was nothing he could say to refute the man's argument. If his father fell, the burden of maintaining the wall and empowering the Glaive would fall to him. If Noctis fell too...well, Lucis would be defenceless.
"You're right. I know that you're right. It's just...I hate it. I hate that I have to sit back and do nothing. I hate seeing that ring take a little more of my father's life each day without being able to do anything to ease that burden."
Noctis had offered on numerous occasions, but it had always been met with a resounding no.
"I hate that my best friends would give their lives for mine in a heartbeat, but I can't do the same for them because Lucis needs a King."
Tumblr media
"I want to be a good Prince. A good King when the time comes. I just...don't think I'm cut out for it."
"But do you understand it?" His words may be a shade too close to insubordination, though it does not break his verbal stride. Leaning forward, broad hands flat against the surface of his desk, he looks Noctis in the eyes. He's earned this. He's stood in the Citadel longer than some kings had even ruled.
He should know.
"You're thousands of miles away, deep behind enemy lines. Word comes in. Something terrible has befallen the King." He should be so lucky. The Astrals should make his job so easy. "Suddenly, the only source of our power stands on the frontlines with us, assuming the transfer of such power is... instantaneous. If not, then our last hope is surrounded by depowered Glaives trying to keep pace with the Empire's forces."
He takes up papers again, voice low, almost comforting.
Tumblr media
"You help us best here, Noctis. We know our power is secure so long as you are here to defend it, if the worst comes to pass."
He picks up a pen, finds it slowly dripping ink against his fingers. He thinks of Noctis' grandfather. And he says nothing. A quiet admission finds its way to his tongue instead instead, "Even if you would prefer not to think of such things."

"You like me being bratty and you know it," Noctis replied with a smirk. It was mostly for show, after all. Noctis wasn't the arrogant brat some people thought he was – his shyness often came across as standoffishness. It was only around those he trusted that Noctis allowed that playful nature to come out. Obi-Wan was one of the people he trusted the most – one of the people he was most comfortable around.
Perhaps a little too comfortable around.
"Sure."
Noctis could have slipped away while Obi-Wan was gone, but the thought didn't really cross his mind. He liked the idea of him coming along. Maybe next time, he'd just invite him in the first place instead of trying to sneak off alone. His father would be happy that he had a guard with him, and Noctis enjoyed Obi-Wan's company, so it was a win-win.
Tumblr media
"Yeah. It's not one of the popular spots so it's usually pretty quiet." Noctis had actually heard about it from his fishing buddy Navyth. It was kind of a hidden gem in the fishing community, so only the people who were serious about fishing knew about it. "Nobody even bats an eye at me there. It's nice."
Tumblr media
"Brat," Obi-Wan said fondly and gently tugged at a raven strand of hair. Noctis wasn't taking this seriously enough, too young to understand that his life was constantly in danger. Those who were loyal to the crown would cut out their own hearts before laying a finger on the prince, but those who weren't..
"Fine, I'll come along." Noctis should be studying when he wasn't training, but Obi-Wan knew better than to argue when Noctis already carried his fishing equipment. "Just one moment."
Obi-Wan went to his chamber to get a book and put on a non-descript brown cloak that covered the sword on his hip, then returned to his prince. He wanted to guard Noctis and also perhaps finally get some more reading done. The book about battle tactics would come in handy during the next council meeting and be of advantage to King Regis.
"So, I suppose you have a favourite fishing place?" It was a flattering thought, that Noctis trusted him enough to take him along to a private location.

"I guess so," Noctis agreed with a smile and a nod. It wasn't like they lived close enough to see each other on a daily basis, and it was rare that his father undertook such a journey – even rarer that he took Noctis with him. A King's place was in his kingdom, after all.
It had taken weeks to prepare for the trip to Rosaria. First they'd had to make sure that things would run smoothly in his father's absence, then there had been the matter of their security. A large convoy of his father's best and most loyal men had accompanied them. Noctis thought that his accident had caused his father to be even more cautious, especially when it came to his safety.
It would be nice to spend some more time with Joshua though.
"I'm glad." The boy's smile widened at that. He didn't know what Joshua had been like before, but he had been pretty shy and timid when they'd fist met, but then again, so had Noctis. Perhaps that was why they got along so well. They were both a little shy, but when they were around each other, that shyness slipped away. That wasn't to say that the boys ran wild, but they were definitely more outgoing.
There time together thus far had been good for both of them. His father must have noticed that too. Noctis had become fairly withdrawn after his accident, but Joshua had brought him out of his shell.

The young heir needed more contact with peers of his age and standing to grow and improveβ€”any less would hinder him in his development and leave a lonely and rather awkward young ruler once he came of age to take the ducal throne of Rosaria. Regardless of how deeply Anabella wished she could shove it aside, she had to admit that she had been partly at fault for this very situation. Sending him away to grow up next to the sons of a lord had been out of the questions. Even sending him to Sanbreque to grow close to Dion was unacceptable to the duchess. She did not wish for him to leave the safety of Rosalith Castle.
Tumblr media
To hell with traditions and the like. And thus, the boy had been grown up mostly by himself and the company of his tutors and his mother. Now, the budding friendship between Joshua and Noctis had been a quite welcome and gladdening change of pace.
A change Anabella wished to keep, and she nodded in agreement, gently placing her cup of tea back onto the saucer. " Joshua will be delighted to know you would like to spend more time with him. I will speak to Elwin and your father for an arrangement, " she replied. " It would be cruel to separate you two again now after you have become friends, wouldn't it? "
She smiled at him and tilted her head to the side. Besides, an alliance between their two nations could be quite beneficial for the both of them if everything turned out well.
" Joshua has been feeling better since you two met. He seems more lively and less illness-stricken. "

"Noctis."
Noctis resisted the urge to let out a sigh. How many times had he told Drautos not to call him that? How many times had he insisted that just Noctis was fine? It wasn't just him, of course. Cor and Clarus were sticklers for formality and even Ignis sometimes fell back into the old habit of using his title.
"Of course I do."
Everybody knew where they got their magic. Some of the cruelest Crownsguard would often remind them that their magic was on loan from his father, but what difference did it make? Magic was nothing without the skill to use it. He had a lot of respect and admiration for Drautos and his men.
Tumblr media
"But wouldn't it make sense to have someone with a direct connection to the crystal out there? Obviously my father can't go, but me? I could help. Even if I'm just on the sidelines providing support. Even if I'm just making potions, I can help. Let me help."
Little boys are always so quick to stake their lives on war. He should know -- Drautos had been just the same, at a far more tender age than this rebellious Prince. That had been a matter of necessity, though. Noctis' words ringing in his ears rang hollow. His was no need, no requirement that he fight or live. Yet here he was, green, childish, ignorant and overprotected --
Tumblr media
His grip loosens before it can even be noticed. Setting the papers aside, he leaned back in his seat. That was tactics, giving them both room where a less controlled man give away his hand by looming. "Do you know what gives a Glaive power, Your Grace? How my men are able to go out and fight the Empire every day?" Regis leaves too many loose ends with the boy. This war has outlived entire regions, yet it seems all too distant to this sheltered Paradise. Something claws at his throat, red-hot fury at the thought, but it is readily smothered.

@twilighttwin liked for a starter.
"Roxas, right?" Noctis asked as he slowly approached the newest member of Organization XIII. The boy had been pretty quiet so far, not that Noctis could blame him. He wasn't a nobody himself, but as a Replica, he could understand that feeling of emptiness – of not knowing who he was or what his purpose was.
Everything had come crashing down when he'd learned that he wasn't the original. He was just a cheap copy of Prince Noctis Lucis Caelum. The memories and the friendships he'd thought he'd had...they weren't his. Not really.

All sentences were taken from different sources about romance, marriage and specially arranged marriage and what that entails. Mentions of affairs, mistresses, wedding ceremonies and medieval talks of what marriage entails follow. Change names, pronouns and locations however you see fit.
Marriage is a marriage, whether it is arranged or not. Both necessitate the same level of dedication.
It’s not an option to be best friends with your life partner; it’s a requirement for a firm foundation in a long-term relationship.
Arranged marriage is not always a bed of roses, but it is possible to achieve with love and faith.
It’s different for women, isn’t it? They have no choice where they go. They grow up in a prison and then get married into one.
Is there anything more courageous/stupid than saying yes to spend your life with someone you have no idea about?
The country was as much of a mystery to me as the man I had married.
One day you’ll be in love with me.
You could be a titled lady.Β
I have avoided the fate my father had planned for me. Surely it is I who has won, not he.
I do not care about power and wealth, father. I want to marry for love.
But if you were matched, what do you think she'd be like?
We're supposed to be unable to keep our hands off of each other.Β
In this case the time is not so important for me, the person asking for commitment is.
We are trapped by convention and must marry another.
Every good child knows: duty before your heart's desire.
I am to be a bride, but whose?Β
I married you to stop the bloodshed, and you keep killing. When will it be enough- when?
I found out soon after we met that Leah’s father had promised her in marriage to some young Pole.
If I ever get into an arranged marriage, I want it to be like theirs.
Arranged marriages require effort; constantly and every day. And where there is love, you want to make these efforts.
A successful arranged marriage can help climb the biggest mountain and build the biggest empire.
An arranged marriage is like wine; it tastes good with time.
You will marry him and do your duty to your House.
You are my daughter and you will do as I say. End of discussion.
Love? What does love have to do with marriage?
He'll honour his duty to family and swallow it.
I was three when my parents promised me. When a deal was struck.Β
Β So I was raised to be his wife. I was taught my favorite color was gold because his favorite color was gold. I was told my favorite foods were his favorite foods
I never thought what it would actually be like to have him... be gone.Β
I was raised for him, and now I am... new. I am brand-new. And I do not even know how to breathe air he does not exhale.
A bride at her second marriage does not wear a veil. She wants to see what she is getting.
Marriage is a financial contract; I have enough contracts already.
The dowry, not the wife, is the object of attraction.
Arranged marriages work like this. The girl is hardly asked and is expected to follow whatever her parents deem fit.
Marry, that marry is the very theme I came to talk of.
Maybe she'll be beautiful. Maybe she'll be rich. As long as she brings swords and men.
Perhaps love is a minor madness.
It doesn't matter who the seed is. The important thing is that it has a place in your womb.
Her maidenhood will seal an alliance and must be kept safe.
Every married woman knows a man can have mistresses and we must look the other way.
All I ask is, that you do not cast me aside. Have mistresses and lovers as you please, but confide in me as I am to be your wife.
A husband’s first and foremost job in a marriage is to protect and love his wife.
Touching without looking had been incredibly arousing.
In my opinion, most marriages are based either on money or the fear of being alone.
I want you in every way there is to want. I want you in any way you choose to share.
I'm free to do with my wife as I fucking please.
The marriage of convenience lasts until you become an inconvenience.
Ours is a marriage of convenience and nothing more.
From now on, you're sleeping in our room. There's no chance in hell I'm letting you sleep far away from me again.
You agreed to this marriage and didn’t even dare to ask my opinion on the matter.
You're going to bend, and so am I. We're going to compromise, negotiate, and distract each other.
Being together means our priorities are going to change.
Men marry because they are tired; women, because they are curious: both are disappointed.
I don't think I am likely to marry, Harry. I am much too in love.
It is certainly romantic to be in love, but there's nothing romantic about a definite proposal.
They are royals, whoever they marry is not their choice but who is better for the crown.
That is a match made in a boardroom.
Once you are wed to another, you will forget me.Β
I will marry a man who desires me but I have no interest in.Β
I will not be a secret kept in shadows. Once you are wed, I will leave.
How can I marry them, when I am in love with another? It is not fair to them, that I think of you when I’m with them.
Ever since I met you, no one else has been worth thinking about.
Behave yourself, out here, we are wed and what you do, reflects on me.
You are being sold like a mare and do not care.
Once I bore him a son, he shall be happy, I know it.
We hate one another but for peace, we must wed. At least, let us enjoy this part of the contract.
I am doing this for my family and for the terms you offer.
A marriage is simply an alliance.
All will be well, love can be found in a marriage. If not love, at least, good company.Β
Do your duty and give him sons.Β  That’s all men want.
I will not be paraded around in a bedding ceremony. I will wed them and bed them, but I will not be humiliated.Β
You think this title gives me power, but you forget, I am a woman.
I am lucky enough to have options. None who please me but at least, I can choose one.
Come to bed now, husband. It is our wedding night, after all.

@stoicfulmuses liked for a starter.
Noctis slid into a seat by the bar – the empty seat next to Leslie – and ordered himself a drink. It had been a long couple of days. Everything had been pretty crazy in the wake of the destruction of the Sector 7 Undercity. It had left Noctis troubled. He'd always prided himself on the knowledge that he was fighting on the right side, but now he wasn't so sure.
So yeah, he needed a drink.
