Something that gets to me about Farscape is that John Crichton was raised on science fiction, and he falls into a world where his only frame of reference is stories. Time and time again, he falls into stories he's familiar with--and it's a coin flip whether he gets to be the hero. Yes, he's OUR protagonist, but he's not always THE protagonist.
He falls into a soul-wrenching conflict with his mortal enemy that, story wise, seems like it SHOULD move his enemy to forgiveness. It doesn't. He gains some insight, but not the cathartic release a story would give. He falls back into time and, by treating the situation like a time-travel story, he causes deaths he'll never forgive himself for.
Everyone else on the ship is, for the most part, in a similar boat. The narratives they have to work with are frequently thwarted and turned against them, and it works so well. Not always satisfying in the ways that we come to expect, no, but compelling nonetheless.

survival lessons from farscape: 1) anything you say can and will be used against you; 2) someone wants to cut a hole in you and fuck you through it, buddy; 3) love will always betray and corrupt you, and it’s the only thing worth having in the entire world; 4) the secret at the heart of the universe is a torture chamber, but inside of that it’s a field of flowers, and inside of that it’s a bomb.

no show understands fluids like farscape. it oozes it goops it slimes it sweats it cries it spits it cums and let me tell you, it licks. do other shows understand the inherent eroticism of A Secretion? do they even Secrete?

Anything You Want
by Matthew Dickman
My living brother is treating us to dinner. He opens the menu wide like a set of wings across the table. Anything you want he says. His voice glimmering above the shining heavens of the silverware. The other one, my dead brother, is sitting in the dark in the graveyard, his back leaning back against his name. I’m walking by with my favorite drug inside me. He’s picking at a scab on his wrist. He looks up, opens his arms wide above the grass. Anything you want, he says. His body beginning to wash out, his voice slowly crawling back.

each individual element (ice, shark, kraken) are fully rendered, but I still had to make the water feel like, y'know, water. things really started clicking when i made part of the shark not covered by water and added the ripples, because it really helped sell the illusion that there was depth to the piece and it wasn't all on one layer.

one time my friend and i came up with a basic “language” called wheat vegetable root. wheat represented every noun. vegetable represented every verb. root represented every adjective. it was very body language based. if my friend beckoned and said “vegetable”, i understood that my friend was telling me to walk with them. if my friend pointed to something and said “wheat”, i understood that they were showing me something. if they said “root wheat” and smiled, they’re saying this thing is good. if they say “root wheat” and frown, they’re saying this thing is bad. we spent a whole day talking like this and drove the rest of our friends insane.
