The Cambridge Ancestry: Part 1
The Duchess of Cambridge’s Connection to King Edward IV of England
This series is going to talk about about the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s ancestry. The Duke of Cambridge obviously has a very royal lineage but the Duchess has her own royal connections. This post will be focused on the Duchess of Cambridge’s royal ancestry specifically her relation to His Majesty King Edward IV of England.
Tumblr media
King Edward IV was King of England from 1461-1470 and 1471-1483. He was a key player in the Wars of the Roses and famous for his exceptional good looks and impressive height (1.94m). That makes him the tallest king in the English royal history. He was also famous for his love of women and pleasure. One of the women that he had a relationship was Elizabeth Wayte (or Lucy). She was a longstanding mistress of him and allegedly had several children with him. One of them was Margaret Plantagenet. She is popularly called Elizabeth but it is now known that her name was Margaret. Through his daughter’s direct descendants comes Dorothy Harrison, who is the mother of Carole Goldsmith, later Middleton. Carole is the mother of the Duchess of Cambridge. Her Royal Highness is therefore a direct descendant of King Edward IV through his illegitimate line. Through King Edward IV, she is related to several other famous royal figures. Richard, 3rd Duke of York, was the father of King Edward IV and therefore an ancestor of The Duchess of Cambridge. Interestingly, the Yorks were also the Earls of Cambridge. The 3rd Duke of York was also the Earl of Cambridge and his descendant Catherine Middleton now is the Duchess of Cambridge. Of course, this York family descended from the line of King Edward III who she is related to even more that I will cover later. Other people that she is related to through Edward IV is the infamous King Richard III of England, the Princes in the Tower (Edward V and Richard of Shrewsbury, and the Tudor Queen Elizabeth of York.

The Duchess of Cambridge’s children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis are therefore direct descendants of the medieval king through their mother. It seems the White Rose of York has found its way into the royal family once more. Albeit, in a less violent way.

“After Mary’s accession in 1553, Mary Basset had an even greater platform for fostering [Thomas] More’s legacy through her position as the Queen’s lady-in-waiting. A 1554 letter from Roger Ascham to Basset, then Mary Clarke, attests to her importance at court, since Ascham hoped to establish connections there before he began his tenure as Mary’s Latin Secretary. Ascham notes that Basset is “famous as an ornament of [her] sex and of the court,” and praises her for following a “two-fold model of virtue and learning”: “This court supplies you with one, your family with the other. I mean our illustrious Queen Mary and your noble grandfather Thomas More… . From this our ruler you have obtained your commitment to virtue, from your grandfather your genius for learning, and from both your great excellence in both areas"”
— The Dedicatory Preface to Mary Roper Clarke Basset’s Translation of Eusebius’ Ecclesiastical History by Jaime Goodrich

“…a chasm opened in the earth and out of it coal-black horses sprang, drawing a chariot and driven by one who had a look of dark splendor, majestic and beautiful and terrible. He caught her to him and held her close. The next moment she was being borne away from the radiance of earth in springtime to the world of the dead by the king who rules it.”
