Child Psychology and Chara
Tumblr media
(Sprites from the sprite resource of CrasherGale, who has since left Tumblr)
(Made with consulting from Keetah Spacecat.) (WARNING: This article covers Chara’s possible motives for knowingly eating a lethal dose of poisonous flowers. It thus covers some dark material.)
Some fan works depict “Chara” (the default name of the Fallen Child that will be used in this article) as violent and demonic even before the completion of the Genocide Route. It’s possible this interpretation comes from a lack of familiarity with child psychology, or disagreeing on Chara’s age and thus age-appropriate moral awareness. Furthermore, there’s little evidence Chara acted demonic before the Genocide Route. Sometimes, kids are little sociopaths—and that’s not a sign they’re pure evil.
Chara thought the buttercup plan was a good idea, and didn’t know or care about its bad consequences, because Chara was just a kid and didn’t have the appropriate moral/cognitive development yet. Chara’s exact motives for the buttercup plan, too, would likely differ depending on their age.

And just like Asgore and Asriel, Toriel and Chara both greet you in the same way.
Chara’s Laughter - An Analysis of Chara and Toriel
What? Oh, yeah, I remember. When we tried to make butterscotch pie for Dad, right? The recipe asked for cups of butter… But we accidentally put in buttercups instead. Yeah! Those flowers got him really sick. I felt so bad. We made Mom really upset. I should have laughed it off, like you did… Um, anyway, where are you going with this? Huh? Turn off the camera…? OK.
This dialogue is from the third of the True Lab tapes in Undertale, spoken by Asriel. It recounts something popularly referred to as ‘the buttercup incident’, where when trying to bake a butterscotch pie for Asgore, Chara and Asriel accidentally poisoned the king by putting in ‘buttercups’ rather than ‘cups of butter’. Later on, Chara uses knowledge gained from this incident to kill themself, so their soul can be used to break the Barrier… but that isn’t the main point of this piece of character analysis.
The thing I’d like to bring to your attention is Chara’s initial reaction to accidentally poisoning their adoptive father– they ‘laughed it off’, according to Asriel.
Chara is an extremely ambiguous character in Undertale, with many members of the fandom having sharply divided opinions of them. Likewise, the opinions on this hint of their character is similarly divided. Some think the laughter was metaphorical and that Chara simply didn’t take it as seriously as Asriel did, others go so far as to say Chara purposefully tried to murder their adoptive father.
It has also been hypothesized that, rather than gleeful giggling of a demonic child, this is just hysterical laughter, and that hysterical laughter is how Chara, specifically, responds to distress. If you subscribe to the Narra-Chara theory, which appears heavily supported, then there’s another instance of the game where a distressed Chara seems to be laughing.
When in a fight with the Amalgamate that was once Snowdrake’s Mother, one of the Actions Frisk can take is to tell a joke. If they do so, you get the following bit of narration–
You laugh, and keep laughing. It’s SO funny, you can’t stop. Tears run down your face.
… what? You didn’t do that?
If the narrator of the game is indeed Chara, there are certain points of the game where they say ‘you’ are doing something, only to take that back and say you didn’t. One possible interpretation is that this is something the narrator–CHARA– does themself, and assumes Frisk must also be doing too, only to realize Frisk is reacting differently, backing up the idea that Frisk and the narrator are two separate entities. That all said, while this character analysis assumes the Narra-Chara theory is canon for this specific narration, the Narra-Chara theory is not the focus of this post.
Rather, the focus is the similarities between Chara and their adoptive mother, Toriel Dreemurr.
Some similarities between Chara’s brother and Toriel’s son, Asriel Dreemurr, have been pointed out between him and his father, Asgore. Both greet you with ‘howdy’, both are very openly emotional(Asriel is called ‘crybaby’ by Chara, Asgore’s openly seen weeping several times on the True Pacifist run}, both have a strong connection to golden flowers, are poor namers, and attempt to kill Frisk at the end of all runs barring No Mercy. But the parallels between Chara and Toriel are strong as well, although much subtler.
Returning to the Narra-Chara theory, it is noted by many that Toriel has a very strong love of puns, exchanging them through the Ruins door with fellow noted punster Sans the skeleton– but although Sans and Toriel are the most well-known pun lovers of Undertale, they are not the most prolific ones. No, that honor belongs to Chara and Papyrus. Chara being the narrator means they have the most lines in the game, granting them opportunity to be the character with the most puns.
Among other things, they refer to Toriel’s chair as ‘Chairiel’, insist that a snowball is actually a ‘Snowdecahedron’, claims Lesser Dog wields a stone dagger made of ‘Pomer-granite’, and says ‘Pomeraisins’ are all over the floor of Lesser Dog’s station.
This love of puns is a marked similarity between Toriel and Chara, but there’s another interesting one that I’ve never seen mentioned before.
They both laugh when horribly distressed.
It’s a popular fandom misconception that Toriel is very emotional. Often in fanart of her battle with Frisk, or of her being killed on a No Mercy Run, Toriel is crying tears of sorrow and desperation, at either the prospect of losing yet another child or at being betrayed by a human she’d thought innocent. This is not the case. Her sprite, for the most part, remains stoic, with an expression appearing almost cold for the majority of the battle. In contrast, Asgore doesn’t cry either in his fight, but unlike Toriel chooses to hide his face by looking down, and then openly weeps afterwards, and is noted by his subjects to be ‘a big fuzzy pushover’ and ‘a marshmallow’, further backing up the idea he’s much softer and more emotional than his ex-wife.
Throughout the battle with her, narration says Toriel is acting aloof. But what’s interesting to note, is that Toriel DOES get emotional when killed in a No Mercy Run, or when betrayal killed… just not in as conventional or comfortable way.
Here is what she says when you attack her, after you’ve convinced her to stop attacking you:
You… … at my most vulnerable moment… To think I was worried you wouldn’t fit out in there… Eheheheh!!! You really are no different than them! Ha… Ha…
She says all this with a rather unsettling smile.
Some people use Chara’s laughter after poisoning Asgore as evidence that Chara is a deeply disturbed child, who went on to possibly coerce or force Frisk into killing monsters. But like Chara, Toriel also laughs in a situation that doesn’t call for it– does this also make Toriel a horrible disturbed mass murderer? She certainly isn’t opposed to the idea of murder when it’s necessary, and is as likely as Asgore to have lived through a war, but seems strongly against gratuitous murder as well as the murder of innocents and children.
Do not “Tori” me, Dreemurr. You pathetic whelp. If you really wanted to free our kind… You could have gone through the barrier after you got ONE SOUL… Taken SIX SOULS from the humans, then free us all… instead just waiting here, meekly waiting for another human to come.
While Asriel takes after his father, and though Chara may not have been born a Dreemurr, Chara appears to strongly take after their adoptive mother Toriel in many more subtle ways. Chara and Toriel are both deeply interesting characters who are too often flanderized, be it into ‘murder demon’, ‘scapegoat’, ‘perfect mother’ or ‘dirty coward’, but looking deeper into canon grants a more nuanced look into both of them.

Thinking about how Undertale so perfectly refutes the idea that you have to die for others to be happy. Even in the case of being a truly awful person, like Flowey.
Chara believed dying was the only way to save the monsters, but ended up getting both the Dreemurr kids killed.
Now you have a chance to finish what Chara started. Will you kill, be killed, or let Flowey be the ringmaster?
But then Flowey chooses to give up control of the timeline to free everyone. And even HE doesn’t die in the end. He stays to care for Chara in spite of the other option. He stays out of love and not some suicidal self-importance about grandstanding through death.
Frisk is told not to kill Asgore even though he’s done bad things as well. Undertale is adamantly against redemption by death.

barring the no mercy route being an influence in this case, how would you describe chara's personality? I cannot describe them well at all despite them being my favorite character. they're too complex lol. all of the meta i can find at this time as them described at both extremes of innocent & evil but i don't think that's accurate
TW: discussions of canon dark topics such as abuse , death and suicide
i love talking about chara, i've talked about them at length before lmao. thank u for giving me a chance to talk about my beloved child.
you can actually read a character exploration i'm doing in a mini-arc for Askfallenroyalty. actually, if you want one condensed post, this comic sums up chara's motives
My interpretation:
chara is an abused kid and suicidal kid*(1) who ran to mount ebott to die.*(2) upon learning that monsters are made of love and humans aren't*(3), chara began to hate humanity. the deltarune prophecy*(4) makes them to be The Angel despite being a human. Feeling undeserving of this title and obligated to fulfill it, Chara wanted to be a good kid more than anything.
But then the buttercup pie incident happened. They've accidentally*(5) poisoned asgore and came up with a plan to ensure the prophecy could be fulfilled and take a hit against humanity. Two birds with one stone -who cares if it's also a personal win too? then obviously the plan goes up in flames and they and asriel are murdered. then asgore wants to kill of all humanity.
your influence*(6) gets Chara onto a path of redemption or a path of destruction, mirroring the deltarune prophecy's two main interpretations.*(7)
in summery: chara is a scared kid trying to fit into a world that demands violence by the past actions of the previous generations. The war massacred monsters and locked them up with a kill-solution -ensuring that further violence would be needed to be free, thus continuing the cycle of violence.
chara is just a kid. they knit, they make macaroni art, they loved their family and had a best friend forever.* (8) but they're also vengeful, they cared so deeply for monsterkind they were ready to die and had no idea they'd be awake as a soul, they were prepared for death. they're complicated, you can't have one side without the other. while i’ve never wanted to murder anyone, i can still relate deeply to chara and see myself in them a lot. the tragedy of them -the fact they never really got a “happy ending” like everyone else just haunts me and it’s why I spend so much time making AFR. I just... love this character so much, i want this kid to be happy. (not that it could ever be easy to get there, happy endings aren’t free.)
And frankly, seeing this hurt kid get demonized just rubs me the wrong way, and it feels completely against the morals Undertale tries to tell with it’s story. I see it as a cautionary tale against violence and dehumanizing others for the sake of hate and violence. how kids can be influenced by the violence -or kindness around them. you don’t need to forgive the ones who hurt you, but killing them is not always the solution -though sometimes necessary as framed in the Undyne the Undying fight.
People get both Undertale’s themes and chara wrong the most, and for the game that’s meant the world to me it bothers me more than it should lol. It’s a Good Story, and I don’t mean to frame my interpretation of the character or themes as 100% canon and I know Mr.Fox’s brain to confirm it kinda deal, but with all the time I’ve spent analyzing and thinking it over I do think it’s not off in the general direction of it lol. And besides the author’s intent isn’t really the end-all-to-be-all. It’s what you get out of the story and the themes that matter and stick with you. No one can take that away from you.
Sources and evidence:
"* If you're cuter, monsters won't hit you as hard." -faded ribbion flavor text * "The ends of the tools have been filed down to make them safer." -gardening tools in New Home (and iirc Toriel's home as well, too lazy to double check rn) * Where are the knives. -no mercy chara (this and paired with the previous imply there are no sharp objects in reach of chara's home because chara can't be trusted with sharp objects out of self harm. This doesn't necessarily mean abuse but paired with them hating humanity so deeply, being suicidal and a child it paints a picture of abuse.
"* I know why (chara) climbed the mountain.* It wasn't for a very happy reason." -asriel post pacifist epilogue dialogue
"* Love, hope, compassion... * This is what people say monster SOULs are made of. * But the absolute nature of "SOUL" is unknown. * After all, humans have proven their SOULs don't need these things to exist." -Library book on monster souls)
* Legend has it, an 'angel' who has seen the surface will descend from above and bring us freedom. - gerson
"* It takes at least a human soul... * And a monster soul. * ...* If you want to go home... * You'll have to take his soul. * You'll have to kill ASGORE." -Alphys. Because boss monster souls are the exception and can persist after death for a short period of time, Chara could of killed any of the family members to escape the underground. this implies escaping wasn't the goal -it was to die (considering they already attempted suicide to fall underground the first time, this is explicitly suicide.) the plaque doesn't mention or speak like monster/human fusion's consumed soul would be aware. chara had no way of knowing they'd be awake. also the whole thing with the pie is a prank. cups of butter. -> buttercups. putting flowers in a pie is a joke to do, we see Chara is similar to Toriel (they mimic her speech in the no mercy monologue, they say “greetings” as she does like how Asriel says “howdy” like Flowey does. Chara makes puns and jokes in the flavor text all the time.
https://imgur.com/a/zP18P -dog food bag at different LV. "When the protagonist first encounters Mad Dummy, they are given the option to beat it up. Choosing to beat it up prompts one of three responses depending on the protagonist's LOVE." (source: undertale wiki)
If the protagonist’s LV is 1, the response becomes "(You tap the dummy with your fist.) (You feel bad.)"
If the protagonist's LV is between 2 and 4, the response becomes "(You hit the dummy lightly.) (You don't feel like you learned anything.)"
If the protagonist’s LV is between 5 and 7, the response becomes "(You sock the dummy.) (Who cares?)"
If the protagonist’s LV is 8 or higher, the response becomes "(You punch the dummy at full force.) (Feels good.)"" This implies Chara (who is the narrator) will feel different about the dog food -which references the classic phrase of "glass half empty/full" showing your out look in life. Then hitting the dummy show's Frisk's out look on violence depending on LV. Note that by the end of it, it's no longer "you feel..." but "feels good" This is Chara.
      7. “* Lately, the people have been  taking a bleaker outlook...* Callin' that winged circle the  'Angel of Death.' “ -gerson “* Only the fearless may proceed. * Brave ones, foolish ones. * Both walk not the middle road. “ -the first plaque in the first puzzle room with Toriel. The idea is to walk on both the left and right sides -you can’t go half way in the middle. this mirrors the “true” endings are only accomplished if you stick to no mercy or pacifist only.
     8. literally their home in New Home is a treasure trove of pre-game chara characterization.

[Image Description: an Undertale chat box with the name “Chara” in its center, between a sprite of the red SOUL on the left and a Dating Hub CRIME measurer and a FRIENDSHIP level on the right. End I.D.]
Chara is the third most popular character in the fandom, with 196 responders (7.4%) choosing them as their favorite; however, their fans are divided on how to interpret them.
In the past, Chara was more often known as a villain, pushing the player on in the no mercy route. Some responders still made comments like “stabby stab” or “crazy ass” about them in their responses, but overwhelmingly more fans say that Chara is misunderstood and does not deserve to be demonized. Even if other Undertale fans still demonize Chara, it would make sense that those who choose Chara as their favorite would have a more sympathetic view of them. One fan with this view said, “They aren't a bad person. They're just a child who needs love.”
Of course, fans still connect them with the No Mercy route, even if it is in a different direction. “If shown the Darker path through No Mercy, something about them becoming a supremely powerful world-erasing Child God I just find incredibly cool. And the way they hold the Player accountable for their actions, the headcanons people have developed… [...] it goes beyond simple words.” While fans still enjoy connecting Chara with the No Mercy route, it’s interesting how there has been a shift away from Chara being the villain, towards Chara using their power to punish the player for going too far.
A third group of fans take an interesting approach in that they like Chara both as a murder child and as a tragic character: “there are so many different ways you can interpret their character, whether as the mastermind behind the genocide run, the flavour text narrator, or just a sad kid who wanted to help their family and the underground.” This wide room for interpretation is a major thing that Chara’s fans love about them.
Much like with Asriel/Flowey, fans like how Chara’s backstory is revealed gradually and throughout different routes of the game. “I love how their presence is so overt but exists almost entirely in subtext and implication you have to piece together. I loved going through text again and finding out more about them,” one responder said.
There’s lots of text to look through for fans who subscribe to the theory that Chara is the narrator of the game. Proving this theory goes beyond the scope of this essay, but it is believed widely enough to be regarded as canon by nearly all of Chara’s fans. If this theory is true, then Chara is with you throughout the whole game, making them feel even more relatable and comforting. A few fans even relate enough to them to kin them, either currently or at some point in the past.
Their trauma and how they are misunderstood seem to be two qualities that make Chara relatable. “I personally see them as a misunderstood, neurodivergent, nonbinary kid (like I was when I first played Undertale) who loves the Dreemurrs,” one fan said. The fact that there is so much left unknown about Chara leaves room for fans to project onto them as well.
While most of Chara’s fans do not demonize them, they also acknowledge that Chara is complex and not perfect. “We ought to remember Chara for who they were: not an evil villainous murderer, or a perfect golden hero, but a child, a child who made mistakes, a child who was mistreated by humanity, a child who loved their family and their kingdom. Just a child, who was the hope for both humans AND monsters.”
Much like with Asriel, Chara’s fans wish they could save them. While there is no ability to physically revive Chara within the game, they clearly live on in the hearts of those who love them, both within the game and out.
Highlights: (under the cut)
I think they deserve better. They aren't a bad person. They're just a child who needs love.
I kinned them so extremely hard from the ages of 13-16 and now they live in my brain forever.
I do wish there was more about them in the game, but for now, we ought to remember Chara for who they were: not an evil villainous murderer, or a perfect golden hero, but a child, a child who made mistakes, a child who was mistreated by humanity, a child who loved their family and their kingdom. Just a child, who was the hope for both humans AND monsters.
Their whole concept as the Narrator of the game and travelling along with Frisk (and the player) is very neat to me. Shame that fandom often interprets them wrong as a sadistic murderer :-( They're a kid who suffered and did what they thought was right at the time, despite being flawed
There is a lot to puzzle out about them, and it’s very rewarding to do so! I’m glad that the fandom consensus about them has gradually shifted away from the evil incarnate demon child image from the end of Genocide. They were once just a spunky kid who ate pie with their hands, knitted a big sweater, tried to talk like an adult, and liked to mess with their brother; they sacrificed themselves for a bad plan and a childish hope that would have never worked in the first place.
In Neutral and Pacifist paths, I prefer to view them in their past and present as kind and well meaning, if sarcastic and a punster at times. While if shown the Darker path through No-Mercy, something about them becoming a supremely-powerful world-erasing Child God I just find incredibly cool. And the way they hold the Player accountable for their actions, the headcanons people have developed... there's so many reasons, I don't think I could do it justice by just writing it down... it goes beyond simple words.
I love their vibe as villain but I'm sure they are not the villain here
Their backstory is so heartbreaking as there are so many different ways you can interpret their character, whether as the mastermind behind the genocide run, the flavour text narrator, or just a sad kid who wanted to help their family and the underground.
Stabby stab
I also love how they serve as the ultimate test of whether or not you've absorbed the pacifist route's lesson. You only see them in person at their worst, and the game never gives you a direct opportunity to show them Mercy, to forgive and comfort them like you get with Asriel/Flowey. It is entirely up to you to look at who they are and why they are that way, to take responsibility for the part you played, and to decide that, despite the harm they've caused to their family and your friends, this deeply damaged child deserves sympathy too.
I love what they represent - the partnership between player and character, and the lust for power when in an RPG-like mindset. They are their own character, certainly, and are more complex than that, but the idea of their death and reincarnation is executed in an amazing way.
Chara is not perfect by any means but they seem like someone who truly cares and wants to do good and holds themself to a high standard which is both admirable and tragic given the circumstances.

Was Toriel the one who told you you had to be a "good angel", Chara? Cause that's a lot of pressure to put on a kid you've only just brought into your family. It's good to know she got better (and can still get even better, based on how she was just before the reset), but still... I hope you manage to get that more learned Toriel back.

Deltarune Teaparty Master Post (Call for Submissions!)
Hello, everyone! Now that this amazing Undertale community has completed a full Undertale Cookbook, it looks like we can expand to Deltarune!
Several months back I noticed the food items in Deltarune seemed to fit together perfectly for a teaparty. So this expansion into Deltarune will be a menu and recipes for a teaparty! A traditional high tea basically includes a lot of little sweets, small cakes, bite-sized sandwiches and other goodies. Here’s an example of one.
Just like with the Undertale Cookbook, this will be a communal effort: you all can submit your recipes or ideas to the blog, and I can organize, kitchen-test and post them! To help everyone get started, I’ve compiled a big list of the food items you can find in the world of Deltarune, and their in-game descriptions/ideas.
If you’d like to contribute, just jump on over to the submissions page!
Tumblr media
Cakes:
-Darkberry Teacakes
-Spin Cakes/Top Cakes (“A pastry in the shape of a top.”)
-Broken Cakes (“Though broken, it seethes with power.”)
-Hearts Doughnuts (“It’s filled with divisive, clotty red jam.”)
Candies & Cookies:
-Choco Diamonds (probably molded chocolate in diamond shapes)
-Dark Candy (“A red-and-black star that tastes like marshmallows”)
-Lancer Cookies (“A cookie shaped like Lancer’s face.”)
Sandwiches:
-Mini Clubs Sandwiches
-Mini Favorite Sandwiches (“You’d think it tastes perfect.”)
-Dark Burger Sliders
Other Snacks:
-Deviled Interdimensional Eggs
-Giga Salad (“ An enormous salad… but, it’s just lettuce, so it’s worthless.” I suggest making this one a little more interesting then pure lettuce.)
-??? with Rouxls’ Roux ( “A dark roux with a delicate aroma. Also… has worms in it.” A roux is a sauce, so it normally is a base for a dish such as soups, pastas, etc. yfcnvwifeuv suggested putting roux on mac n’ cheese.)
-Fresh Prison Moss (idea from who-is-susie)
-Lancer’s Stump Salsa (what’s in it? nobody knows.)
-Revive Mint Ice
Beverages:
-Revive Mint Tea (from ‘Revive Mint;’ “A minty green crystal.”)
-Golden Flower Tea (my suggestion, so there’s some tea variety to offer)
-Hot Chocolate (“Topped with home-made marshmallows in the shape of bunnies.”)
-Life Dew (“Glowing dew… It refreshes your SOUL.”)

And now Chara’s Tea!
The fallen tea. This is not a tea for the faint of heart. It’s bitterness runs deep. Black tea, dark as the abyss, carries with it bitter memories of chocolate, and the promise of blood orange in the future. Be cautious, lest you become addicted to the LOVE this tea offers you.

Undertale Cookbook - Butterscotch-Cinnamon Pie
Tumblr media
Hey everyone! Since today is a special day– Undertale’s 4th anniversary– this seemed like the perfect time to release the Undertale Cookbook’s final recipe. Here it is, Toriel’s homemade Butterscotch-Cinnamon pie. Tuck in and restore your HP.
Recipe by SabrePanther
Ingredients:
Pie Filling:
- 1 cup packed brown sugar (dark brown is best)
- 4 tbsp unsalted butter
- 2 cups half & half (or 1 1/2cups milk + ½ cup heavy cream)
- 3 egg yolks
- ¼ cup cornstarch
- 2 tsp vanilla
- 2 tsp cinnamon
- 1/8 tsp hazelnut extract (optional)
- 1/6 tsp salt
Crust:
- 1 unbaked pie crust
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- ¼ tsp cinnamon
- ¼ tsp nutmeg (optional)
- butterscotch chips (optional)
- 1 bag small marshmallows (optional)
Topping:
- whipped cream (optional but recommended)
Equipment:
- a whisk (a mixer or blender would also be recommended, but not necessary.
- plastic wrap
- Determination! -_-
Directions:
PREPARE AND BAKE CRUST:
- Preheat oven per pie crust instructions.
- Stir together melted butter, ¼ tsp cinnamon, & nutmeg in a small bowl or cup.
- Brush on unbaked pie crust evenly, covering the entire surface.
- Poke bottom of pie crust with a fork.
- (Optional) Place a layer of small marshmallows (smushed until somewhat flat) on the bottom of the pie crust.
- Bake pie crust per pie crust instructions or until golden-brown (optional marshmallow layer should have browned and caramelized).
- Leave out to cool.
- (Optional) Melt the butterscotch chips in a bowl via microwave or over the stovetop. Drizzle the melted butterscotch over the pie crust edges. Then stick the crust in the fridge so the melted butterscotch solidifies.
MAKE FILLING:
- In a medium saucepan, over low heat, melt and slightly brown the butter.
- Stir in the brown sugar.
- Increase heat to medium, stirring constantly, until it comes to a boil.
- Cook for a minute, or until it starts to smell like caramel, then remove from heat.
- In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together egg yolks, cornstarch, salt, half & half, (optional) hazelnut extract, and 2 tsp cinnamon.
- VERY SLOWLY pour in melted sugar mixture into mixing while whisking vigorously (a blender/mixer if you have one will help). Pouring in the hot sugar too fast will curdle the eggs. Whisk until mixture is smooth. There may be little bits of undissolved sugar at the bottom, but don’t worry, this will dissolve fully in the next stage.
- Return the mixture to the saucepan, cook over medium heat while stirring constantly.
- Cook until the mixture comes to a boil and thickens to a pudding consistency.
- Turn off heat and whisk in vanilla.
- Pour mixture into prepared pie crust.
- Cool for 30 minutes at room temperature.
- Place a layer of plastic wrap over the pie, then store in a refrigerator for at least 5 hours (recommended 24 hours before serving for for best flavor).
- Serve with whipped cream and enjoy!
NOTES:
- Do not substitute buttercups for butter.
- The remaining egg whites can be used to make a meringue in place of whipped cream.
- Normal store-brand butters can certainly be used. But for the added boost to the butterscotch flavor, I recommend using high-quality butter brands like Kerrygold Irish butter. Its worth it for an extra couple bucks.
Pure “Pacifist” Pie (vegan, dairy and egg-free):
- Leave out salt, butterscotch chips and marshmallows
- Use a pie crust not made with dairy/egg, or a graham cracker crust; use gluten-free crust if gluten allergic
- Use 2 tbsp Earth Balance butter for pie wash
- Leave out eggs from the recipe and add an additional 1 TB cornstarch
- 4 tbsp Earth Balance butter cooked with the brown sugar
- Silk soy milk (1 ¾ cups) plus 3 tbsp Earth Balance butter in place of creamer
- 8 drops imitation butter flavor in sugar/butter mixture (optional but recommended, can be found in spice section

It’s been a crazy, amazing journey working on this cookbook project. Enormous thanks go out to everyone– all the contributers of recipes, the artist contributers, folks who have tried the food out and given feedback, everyone. I’ll leave a more detailed post in the coming days about the wrap-up of this cookbook, but for now, I just wanted to wish everyone well.

Undertale Cookbook - King Asgore’s Golden Flower Tea
Tumblr media
Recipes by sketcheddd, Lee, and Anonymous
There is much discussion, I see, about the exact species of flower that I love in my favorite golden flower tea. In truth, it is a flower unique to Mt. Ebott, but there are several common substitutes that are still very good teas indeed.

Undertale-Themed Cookbook!
Tumblr media
(art by hyenafu)
Undertale Cooking is a collaborative project with the vibrant community of Undertale fans. While many of us enjoy drawing or writing, others enjoy cooking and baking, and that is a perfect creative outlet for expressing our love for this game. Considering how many wild and wacky foods the game contains, and how much of the game seems to be centered around food and cooking, it really is a perfect match.
The recipies you’ll find in this cookbook come from many people in the fandom, and span almost every single food item you can run across in the game. I’ve done my best to organize, photograph, kitchen-test and edit everything into a cohesive collection. Additionally, we have some lovely art for the cookbook contributed by some wonderful artists.
Ultimately, I’d like to create a free eBook version of this cookbook, something colorful and bright you can flip through and enjoy. That has ended up being a rather ambitious goal, so it may be some time before it’s completed. In the meantime, we do have a printer-friendly compilation of all these recipes so you can download, print out and then cook to your heart’s content.
A huge thanks goes out to everyone for all their contributions, feedback, suggestions and help with this exciting creation!

Undertale Recipe - MTT-Brand Human Soul Cake
Tumblr media
Recipe by driedblueberries
Hello, beauties! If you missed the last episode of Cooking with a Killer Robot, don’t fret! I have reproduced the recipe for my fabu-ful human soul cake here for your viewing pleasure. It is a lightly spiced layer cake that will serve one very hungry Mettaton fan, or 8 moderately hungry fans. If you prefer cupcakes, the recipe will make about 18 of them.
Let’s get baking!
Ingredients:
For the Cake:
3 cups (360 grams) all-purpose flour
1 cup (225 grams) unsalted butter, at room temperature
2 cups (400 grams) granulated sugar
1 can MTT-Brand Always-Convenient Human-Soul-Flavor-Substitute, or: 1⁄4 teaspoon nutmeg, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1 teaspoon ginger, and 1 teaspoon allspice
¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
4 large eggs, at room temperature
1 tablespoon cider vinegar
1 cup (240 mL) whole milk
2 ½  teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
For the Frosting:
¾ cup (175 mL) water
1 small orange, zested and juiced
1 cup (225 grams) butter, softened
2/3 cup (152 grams) sugar
12-16 oz. (454 grams) cranberries (fresh or frozen)
2-3 cups (~227-340 grams) confectioner’s sugar
pinch salt
1. First, darlings, you will need to preheat your MTT-Brand oven! Although MTT-Brand ovens can reach temperatures of up to nine-thousand degrees, for this recipe, you only need to preheat it to 350°F (177°C).
2. In a measuring cup, stir the cider vinegar into the milk and let the mixture stand at room temperature for 10 to 15 minutes. The milk will begin to thicken and curdle. You have just made buttermilk. How scientific! Dr. Alphys would be proud.
3. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and MTT-Brand Always-Convenient Human-Soul-Flavor-Substitute. If your can of MTT-Brand Always-Convenient Human-Soul-Flavor-Substitute is empty and you haven’t yet bought another, then nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, and allspice may be used instead. Set this mixture aside.
4. In a separate bowl, cream the butter and sugar together until light and     fluffy, and then add the eggs one at a time, mixing well until they are fully incorporated. Add in the vanilla extract. If you are using an MTT-Brand stand mixer, then do this step in the bowl of the stand mixer.
5. Pour in the flour mixture in three parts, alternating with the buttermilk, curdled bits and all. Mix until everything is just combined and not one magnificent moment more! Unlike spaghetti, the cake does not get better the more you stir!
6. Divide the batter evenly between two greased and floured 8-inch cake pans. Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean. If you are making cupcakes, pour the batter into a lined cupcake pan and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center of a cupcake comes out clean.
7. When the cake is done baking, let it rest in the pan at room temperature for 15 minutes before removing it from the pan and letting it cool on a wire rack.
8. Now for the lovely red frosting! Fetch a sauce pan and combine the water, orange zest, juice and sugar over medium heat until the sugar dissolves. Stir in the cranberries and bring the mix to a boil, then simmer uncovered for about 15 minutes. The berries will have popped and the sauce should thicken. Remove from heat and let cool.
9. Cream the butter in your mixer until it’s as smooth as my legs, about three minutes or so.
10. Add the confectioner’s sugar gradually. Too fast and you’ll have a powdery mess. Once you’re done, turn your mixer on high for 10 seconds or so to lighten the frosting.
11. Add the pinch of salt and then gradually add about 1/3 cup of the cranberry sauce. Taste the frosting and add more cranberry sauce to taste. If you thin the frosting too much with the sauce, you can add more confectioner’s sugar. Save any remaining cranberry sauce for other wonderful recipes!
12. Frost your cake and enjoy a truly delectable delicacy.
OOC Note: This recipe was inspired by soul cakes, which are traditional English and Irish treats made for All Hallows’ Eve, All Saints’ Day, and All Souls’ Day. Since traditional soul cakes resemble hard shortbread cookies, I decided to adapt one recipe I found into a soft and fluffy cake. The frosting is an adaptation from here.

Undertale Cookbook - MTT's Starfait
Tumblr media
Recipe by alizardnamedtopaz
–See the cookbook master post for more recipes!–
HELLO BEAUTIES AND GENTLEBEAUTIES, AND WELCOME TO…. COOKING WITH A KILLER ROBOT! *Confetti*
Tumblr media
TODAY ON THE SHOW, WE WILL BE MAKING A STARFAIT! SADLY SINCE MOST OF YOU DON’T HAVE MOST OF ITS WONDERFULLY ARTIFICIAL INGREDIENTS, WE’LL USE SOME OF THE EASIER TO FIND ALTERNATIVES!
YOU WILL NEED:
1 24 oz Container of Vanilla Yogurt
Red, Light Blue/Blue, and Yellow Food Coloring
Topping of Choice (As long at it can be shaped into a star)
FIRST, PLACE ABOUT 1-3 SPOONFULS OF YOGURT INTO FOUR DIFFERENT BOWLS. IN ONE BOWL, ADD ABOUT TWO DROPS OF YELLOW FOOD COLORING TO GET A NICE GOLD.
IN THE NEXT BOWL, ADD A DROP OF RED AND YELLOW. DON’T WORRY IF THE COLOR IS TOO STRONG, JUST ADD SOME MORE YOGURT TO LIGHTEN THE COLOR. IN THE LAST TWO BOWLS, ADD A SINGLE DROP OF YELLOW IN ONE, AND A SINGLE DROP OF LIGHT BLUE IN ANOTHER.
ONCE YOU HAVE ALL YOUR YOGURT COLORS, GET SOME PLAIN WHITE YOGURT AND PLACE IT ON THE BOTTOM. MAKE SURE YOU DON'TJUST COVER THE BOTTOM, YOU WANT IT TO BE SLANTED.
CONTINUE LAYERING THE OTHER COLORS IN THE FOLLOWING ORDER: GOLD, RED/YELLOW, BLUE, AND YELLOW.
NOW ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS ADD THE STAR! MY PREFERENCE IS SUGAR COOKIES, BUT IT CAN ALSO BE DONE WITH OTHER INGREDIENTS SUCH AS WHITE CHOCOLATE. YOU CAN ALSO ADD EDIBLE GLITTER FOR DRAMATIC EFFECT, GLITTER MAKES EVERYTHING BETTER, DARLINGS!
AND THAT IS HOW YOU CAN MAKE YOUR OWN STARFAIT! SADLY WE RAN OUT OF THE NORMAL GLASSES, (DOCK BURGERPANT’S PAY!) BUT I JUST BORROWED ONE OF PROFESSOR ALPHYS’ BEAKERS, I’M SURE SHE DOESN’T NEED IT!
THANK YOU MY LOYAL VIEWERS, I’LL SEE YOU IN THE NEXT EPISODE OF COOKING WITH A KILLER ROBOT. GOOD NIGHT DARLINGS! *Recorded clapping*
