random prideshipping-related thoughts i've had lately that don't have anywhere else to go:

during the kc grand championship when yugi/atem are dueling zigfried and kaiba is very clearly like "i would not trust anyone else to defend my honor company because no one can beat yugi except ME" and then they share that little smug smile

you guys are in public, come on

i enjoy the orichalcos arc for lots of reasons but it also gave us the prideshipping duel and partnership (and the episode i call date night at kaibacorp) and i think it's an important step in the two of them not seeing each other only as mortal enemies

it's also very interesting to me that kaiba, for all his grandstanding in battle city about power and victory, never ever succumbs to the orichalchos. it's not even on his radar to acquire the card in any way, he just wants to get rid of it and dartz. meanwhile, atem does fall prey to it... equal, but opposite, character growth!!

love the thought of the knights of atlantis being ancient versions of atem, kaiba, and joey

One of the things about cutting the whole early manga in the anime adaption is that I think we really lose out on how important Atem’s initial penalty game is to Kaiba’s character arc. Gozaburo loses, and then kills himself; Kaiba loses, and then Atem gives him a hyper-realistic nightmare illusion of being murdered by monsters. That is–Kaiba learned “to lose is to die” from his dad, but Atem himself unknowingly gave him a pretty forceful and traumatic reinforcement of that lesson. 

And it’s an incident Kaiba is outright fixated on. He doesn’t just build a giant death theme park to get revenge for it, he invents solid vision and a torture nightmare box specifically to recreate it as closely as possible. He doesn’t torture grandpa for nothing, or just to get Yugi into Death-T. He beats him in a duel, and explicitly refers to the nightmare illusion as his penalty game. Likewise, Mokuba doesn’t get shoved in until he loses. 

Kaiba is constantly re-creating the bad things that happened to him and re-inflicting them on himself and others with the roles swapped, repeating it with someone else as victim. If winning for Kaiba meant watching Gozaburo throw himself out the window, then winning for Yugi must mean watching Kaiba throw himself off the castle’s edge. If losing for Kaiba means experiencing death, getting eaten alive with no way out, then that’s what losing has to mean for grandpa, and for Mokuba, and for Yugi and everyone else too. That is how the world works, and how it must work, because if it doesn’t work that way and none of that needed to happen then he went through all of it for…nothing at all.
