Calgary’s Ring Road to finally get its Missing Piece
If you live in and around the city of Calgary, you will be all too familiar with the constant bickering, confusion and ultimately construction headaches associated with the Ring Road. Something that on paper makes a lot of sense and allows commuters to get where they’re going faster, but something that in reality seems to be taking a long time coming to fruition. Two parts of this road are already operational, while the southeast portion that was supposed to be open on October 1st of this year remains in limbo and the southwest part up until a few days ago was still not even agreed upon, even after a half a century of back and forth, conversations, deals and ‘no’ votes by the Nation that holds the needed land.
If we rewind back to 2009, the deal that seemed a good fit between the province and the Tsuu T’ina people that would see compensation, land transfers and other things got a resounding "no" vote when it came to crunch time. Part of the no vote came because there were not enough guarantees for the Nation under the deal.  Because part of the road needs to be built on their land, the cooperation of the Nation is a must. So, a few years went by and another deal was struck. This one sees almost 5000 acres of Crown Land going to the Tsuu T’ina people in exchange for the 988 acres of their land needed for the Ring Road’s southwest portion. Along with the land exchanges is a $275 million monetary contribution to the Nation, something that works out to about $70,000 per member. This time, in a vote just last week, the Nation voted "yes" to the deal so the southwest part of the Ring Road can now be classified as in the works. The guarantees were in place and the Nation felt that the deal reflected more of what they wanted not only for today but for future generations as well. Now the planning, building, auditing and finally opening the last part of the road that will work to ease traffic on major thoroughfares and make commuting that much easier for everyone can commence.

How to Buy a Home and not a Headache We want to help you make your house a home and save you the pain, agony and headaches that can be associated with home ownership. We want to help you avoid buyer’s remorse altogether. Read on and this as your guide to buying a perfect home, not a headache! Get your ducks in a row The number one cause of home-related headaches is finances. It’s most important to get all your financial ducks in a row and really know where your finances stand before you even start the house hunting process. Meet with mortgage and financial specialists to figure out just what you can afford. Buying a house is not a straight-forward process. You’ll need to know how much to have on hand first for your deposit, and then what percentage of your mortgage you will need to put down in cash. You will also need to know how much cash to set aside for renovations and home improvements. You will also need to have a safe amount of emergency money in the bank for potential problems and disasters. In home-ownership, there is always something that needs to be fixed or replaced. Cochrane, Alberta- Considering the Benefits
Tumblr media
It all started way back in 1881 when a tiny establishment of ranches and farms came to be collectively known as Cochrane Ranche. Over time the community grew and in 1903, Cochrane Ranche became a village. Today, the Ranche part of the name has been committed to history, and Cochrane has become the second largest town in the province of Alberta. Although technically she can become a city due to her census numbers, the residents of this beautiful town are happy to keep it just that, a town, one that offers all the modern amenities but still has a strong hold on its deep ranching heritage, something that echoes throughout the historic main street and radiates through her neighbourhoods.
Tumblr media
Located just about 20 km outside of the Calgary city limits, Cochrane is nestled in the Bow River Valley amid the rolling foothills of the Rocky Mountains. The gorgeous vistas around town include lush meadows, picturesque lakes and the mountain background itself, making the 30 km of pathways around town popular destinations for scenic walks which folks of all ages can enjoy. The main street is full of stories of yore, including what is now Alberta’s third oldest working hotel, and buildings that used to be the core of the community lovingly restored to their old-world charm and now home to boutiques and restaurants. Mingled in with the heritage of the town are the names you know when it comes to grocery stores, hardware stores and chain restaurants which add the ‘modern’ to the equation but don’t detract from the western history that can be found at every turn.
Tumblr media
Cochrane may be in the heart of Alberta’s cattle country, but it is fast becoming a popular town in which to live while commuting to work in the big city. Well known for its coffee houses, it is also a ‘must-do’ for those with a sweet tooth who want to sample some of the best ice cream in the province, conveniently located at the famous MacKay’s. It is also a great destination for outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy wind sports of every description, kayaking, hiking and cycling in the summer months and ice skating, snow-shoeing, and cross country skiing come winter. Just a short jaunt down the Trans-Canada highway and you’re in the skiing mecca of the province, with many downhill facilities just a stone’s throw away.  At only about an hour’s drive from Banff National Park, and easy to access as it sits at the junction of the 1A and Highway 22, Cochrane is not only a fantastic place to visit but has proved itself as a phenomenal place to live, something that its booming population can certainly attest.

Things that would make you want to Migrate to Calgary, Alberta Canada Calgary is located in the grasslands and parkland natural regions of Alberta, Canada.  It’s beautiful scenery, abundant parks and different culture is why people search for ways to live in this city. Furthermore, in 2011, Brookings Institution reported that Calgary was one of the top 200 cities worldwide. With the economic growth of the city as the leader in oil and gas industry, it gave high personal income and low unemployment rates which is why it can suffice for the cost of living in the city and why people search for Calgary homes for sale and opt to live in this city. However, that is not the only reason why people want to live in this beautiful city. After the Flood: Cleanup Efforts in Full Force
Crumpled roads, twisted C-train tracks, water submerging row upon row of the Saddledome and the entire downtown closed. That is just some of the devastation from the massive flood of 2013 that is now being cleaned up in a major effort from professionals and volunteers alike.
Of course not all the flooding was contained to public buildings, and with an estimated 75,000 people having to be evacuated from their homes, the damage to private property is both heartbreaking and financially intimidating, but help is on the way. On Monday, the province announced a $1 billion dollar first step towards helping those displaced from the flood, offering pre-loaded debit cards for those who qualify worth $1250 per adult and $500 per child, to help with day to day living expenses. These cards are set to be handed out later in the week, with the promise from the province that this is just the beginning as Calgarians and other Southern Alberta residents go about rebuilding their lives.
The city of Calgary is still in a state of emergency, even though the water has receded and the water levels in both the Bow and Elbow Rivers have decreased in the last few days. But what is left when the water goes is a dirty, polluted and potentially dangerous breeding ground for germs and bacteria, not to mention mud, mud and more mud. Miraculously, the tap water in the city is still safe to drink, although experts are asking residents to conserve as much as they can, this includes not spraying any water outside, no washing cars or watering lawns, and trying to save water by not running the washing machine or dishwasher for the foreseeable future. Evacuation notices have been lifted to date in more than 12 communities, with just 9 others still under orders not to return home, and the public areas are being cleaned up and opened in remarkable fashion.

DESTINATION: CALGARY FOR VICTORIA DAY FAMILY FUN
It’s that time of year again, the Victoria Day long weekend, the unofficial start of summer and the first (hopefully) great weather long weekend of the year. Instead of going away for the duration, there are plenty of family friendly things to do that are right in your backyard that will make this Victoria Day long weekend one for the memory books. Your staycation awaits!
In Calgary the May long weekend means that Heritage Park once again opens its doors for the season. Take a horse drawn carriage ride around the park, hop on the steam train, let the kids loose at the vintage midway and explore all the old buildings for a glimpse of what life was like for our ancestors. Visit the schoolhouse, watch the blacksmith, see a hospital, houses and stores and go back to a simpler time in our history.
