People are getting desperate and things will only get worse if we don't stop it. [She ran a hand through her hair, thinking.] I hate having to bring people in without solid evidence, since they could be innocent, but we can't just let this go on.

Arrest them. If it was an accident, they'll pay for the damages and help repair. If it was malicious, then we will decide the nature of the punishment. There's a lot of factors to consider. Do you know anything about the fire? Anything at all?

Few people can see things the way that I do, which is a pity. Even so, no need to apologize, Captain. It is not your fault you’ve not lived long enough to learn these lessons.

So, what will you do once you find someone to place the blame on?

When I was fifteen years old, I watched thirty-seven men and boys freeze and starve to death because of this winter. Forgive me if I cannot see things the way you do.

Whether it was for the best or not, the fire was still a crime and those responsible will be found and punished. Its not my place to make moral judgments; my place is to do my job.

[Cynwrig can’t help but chuckle a bit.] With all due respect… That’s such a funny term, isn’t it? Considering when one uses it, they usually do not mean to give any respect at all. You need not extend your forced kindness onto me, Captain, it clearly pains you.

And I’ve seen people die in a number of horrifyingly fascinating ways, Captain. In the vast spectrum, I would put freezing to death rather low on the list of worst ways to die, honestly.

I can’t say I’ve lost anything, though. But that is because I do not value that which you give such mighty importance. People die, one way or another. It is inevitable. And mourning is born from a place of selfishness. People are never truly sad for their dead loved ones, but themselves, and the fact that this person they put so much value in does not exist in this realm. But what suffering does your loved one know once they pass on? 

None, Captain. A dead man knows no suffering. So I find it difficult to muster up any sorrow for those who have died. They are probably enjoying themselves much more than you or I.

Ah, so perhaps that’s the lesson. A lesson in selfishness. The fights held in the Ring are also born from a selfish place — the selfish desire to see blood spilled, but certainly not your own.

So, much like death, I suppose this too was for the best.

With all due respect, I think you know nothing of what we have lost. Have you seen someone taken by the cold? Have you seen young boys crying because their very hands and feet and ears freeze  right off their bodies? Have you felt the cold when you cannot escape it, the way it burns like fire and then you feel nothing? What have you lost to the cold? 

You say that we do not appreciate what we have, like it is so easy to forget that which we have lost. 

Hm. Interesting. [He said this as if her words were anything but.]

Perhaps that’s the reason the gods are upset with you all. You all are ungrateful for what you do have, and focus too much on what you don’t.

I do not know why the Gods have cursed us, but I know that I have-[She quickly changed her words.]-too much has been lost to the winter for it to be a blessing.

I don't know what to tell you. 

So you believe that this winter is a curse, then? Meaning that you think the gods might have some reason to be upset with the Norns, correct? I’m interested to hear your theories on the topic, Captain.

I know that I have only been here for three hundred years, but I did not think it was Norn tradition to behave recklessly either.

Blessed us? Blessings do not come with the deaths of good men, women and children. Blessings do not seep the life from the land and hope from hearts. This winter is no blessing.

It is tradition. I doubt the Gods are punishing us for a festival.

I’m certain our goddess Eira would not be pleased to hear you speak ill of the climate she’s blessed us with.

Truly, it was a foolish idea to have a festival in a month with two new moons. The gods probably punished you all for tempting fate.
