Arthur tends to spoil Charles a bit. Feathers, nice pelts, choice cuts of meat stuff like that. Also money too.

“Sugar, ya got any money?” Arthur is preparing to saddle up for a job.

“I can take care of myself Arthur.” Charles looks up from the arrow he’s preparing.

“Awww I know, just wanna….” Arthur pulls down his hat a bit. “I love ya, don’t want ya ta work so hard all the time.”

“…..you are soft Arthur.” Smiles as he flicks up Arthur’s hat kissing him.

When Arthur leaves, Charles hogs the bed and keeps Arthur’s pillow in his arms. He misses the man but loves hugging their big bed.

Becoming normal ranchers, was a bit of an adjustment. Both men were not used to having privacy or having a roof over their heads. Imagine their amazement watching the rain fall and knowing they didn’t have to go out into it.

Arthur draws and paints Charles a lot, Charles is flattered but will pose for him….sometimes.

When Arthur finds something new or interesting he feels like he will burst if he didn’t tell Charles. Arthur will wait for the go ahead from Charles before telling him about the new thing. Dinosaurs blew Charles mind

Comfortable silence is a blessing to the two men.

Both also enjoy time away from eachother but give it three days and they are running for the other.

Charles got Arthur a puppy, only for Arthur to hold out a kitten for Charles.

Charles enjoys the collections of odd trinkets that Arthur has found. (Though the female fertility statue worried him…was Arthur gaining weight?-side eyes Arthur- ) he really enjoys the cigarette cards the most.

Charles is a big reader, something he picked up from Hosea. They share a good sized book collection.

When Arthur is stressed, he tends to steal Charles’ hoodie. So he can just glance at the cowboy and know something’s off.

I kinda like the idea of a goofy Charles like often he’s depicted as being the straight man that is totally put together. But fr ya boi basically lived by himself since the age of 13! Give me a Charles with the social graces of a pineapple like Arthur handing him a cup of coffee and Charles is like is he hitting on me?! Maybe he borrows one of Mary Beth’s books for research and is left even more confused!

thinking about charles smith avoiding camp during parties because he's not into all the noise and doesn't have a whole lot to say, plus he likes his alone time anyway. so he volunteers for guard shift and ambles about the perimeter, listening to all the drunken camp songs from a distance.

but then im also thinking about arthur having a couple whiskeys and getting all warm in the chest, suddenly wondering where charles is. he looks around briefly to see if he can spot him anywhere, and when he doesn't immediately see that familiar grey hoodie floating in his field of view he's on the move. he snoops around the camp, maybe he asks someone and eventually he spots charles on the perimeter of camp, sauntering with a rifle in hand.

of course, arthur thinks. charles would be finding some menial task to take up over getting loose with this lot. he can't necessarily blame him, but that doesn't mean he can't still enjoy the night as well, right?

so arthur snags a couple more whiskeys and approaches.

"enjoying the party?" arthur jokes.

charles looks over his shoulder as he shrugs them. he seems to grasp the teasing tone and half smirks. "someone has to do it." he raises the rifle slightly.

"coulda made bill," arthur suggests, "couldn't hurt to take a night off."

"i don't need a night off." charles responds.

"nah, i meant bill and the booze." that earns arthur a laugh, low and warm. arthur holds the whiskey out, "you could use one too, though."

charles glances down at the drink and then up at arthur, his face dusted pink - clear even under the low light of the moon. be it from the alcohol charles can't be sure (it's not). he looks back down at the whiskey and away from those shiny blue eyes that peer curiously at him in a way that makes his heart flutter.

as charles hesitates with his answer arthur quickly offers, "i can let you drink it on your own, if you'd like."

a quick shake of the head, charles answers "no, stay," with a little more haste than he'd have liked to. after a quick clear of the throat he takes the whiskey.

a wry grin breaks across arthur's face, along with a a blooming heat he's sure is all the more visible. "alright."

Arthur and Charles are so bear4bear it's unreal. I know the truth I know what's really going on. Rockstar had the option to give Charles abs in 1907 when he's bareknuckle boxing YET THEY DIDN'T AND THEY ARE SO BASED FOR THAT.
