There are just a handful of Chechen families in the Boston area, and the Tsarnaevs seemed a welcome addition. “They had wonderful children,” recalls Anna Nikeava, a Chechen who befriended the Tsarnaevs shortly after they arrived. “They were very soft, like cuddly kittens, all four kids, always hugging and kissing each other.” And the parents, too, seemed to adore each other, even while Anzor, who spoke broken English, worked as a mechanic, making just $10 an hour. For the first year, the Tsarnaevs received public assistance. But they never seemed to struggle, Anna says. “They were very much in love and enjoying life. They were fun.”

The second photo is the actual writing of Mary when she and her friend, Norma, broke into and vandalized a nursery and left notes that claimed responsibility of the killing. Police dismissed the incident as a mere prank.

The Hello Kitty Murder: One night, a nightclub hostess, Fan Man-yee, was abducted by three men, 34-year-old Chan Man-lok, 27-year-old Leung Shing-cho, and 21-year-old Leung Wai-lun. They took Fan back to their apartment, where they beat and tortured her for over a month. They eventually killed and dismembered her, and then stuffed her head into a Hello Kitty doll. The murderers were caught only because one of the kidnappers 14-year-old girlfriend reported to the police that she was being haunted by the deceased woman.

It’s one of the handwritten notes from Jahar Tsarnaev (2013 Boston Marathon bomber), from his interrogation by federal agents while in hospital, after he was captured on April 20, 2013. He had been severely wounded during his capture, and was unable to talk due to a tracheotomy, so he had to write down his answers.
