This scene right here defines Lancelot for me.
This moment of almost-heretical religious veneration of Guinevere's hair - which is being presented like a magical artifact - is what sells Lancelot for me. This is what make his character what it is and is what makes his character understandable to me as a modern person (from a non-western country) divorced from European Medieval values.
This is what makes me "get it". And I always think about it when talking about Lancelot and Courtly Love.

hello. i was wondering sumn. what makes a knight of camelot ~A Knight of Camelot~? there are so many of them and they’re all different but do they have characteristics in common that are found in the average Famous Knight of Camelot and that when you see you think “ah yes that is very arthurian of them”. i hope my question is not a bother to you and too confusing.
Hi! Like every other answer I ever give, it’s highly dependent on the text.
In the Mabinogion, Arthur’s best knights tend to have special abilities, even magical powers. We all remember Kai’s fun list of attributes.
Tumblr media
But generally speaking, fame in Camelot comes from 3 things:
Every successful knight is hot. I don’t make the rules.
They have to be good at beating the snot out of other guys. Obviously.
Branding. I’m so serious.
My basis for this comes from the Vulgate descriptions of the Orkney Bros. Specifically, Gaheriet/Gaheris. Not because he’s famous, but because he isn’t.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s no accident that Gaheris never makes it to the big screen the way his brothers do. He is, by design, basic. The quintessential middle child. He doesn’t have a Special Trait (such as Gawain’s courtesy or reputation as a ladies man or noontime powers etc.) and that makes Gaheris forgettable. To be a famous knight, you gotta put your whole pussy into it, in front of a live studio audience, or you won’t be famous no matter how good you are. Makes sense when you think about it!
Not sure if that answers your question, but that’s what I got. Take care. :^)

Nobody talk to me I’m thinking of the historical and cultural landscape leading up to the Scottish Knights of the Round Table tales where a heroic Mordred leads a rebellion against a tyrannical King Arthur.
The fact that the Scottish identified themselves with a character usually portrayed as an irredeemable villain.
The fact that King Arthur was originally a Welsh folk hero of sorts and it had become so Anglicised by that time it was pissing off the Scots.
The myth of Arthur which had been popular and romantic for centuries being soured for people who were in the middle of a war with a future colonial power.
I mean obviously this is just “My fanfic is better than your fanfic.” on a national scale like all adaptations of the Knights but it gives me the feels.
This is what’s fun about the knights!!! Historical and cultural feels and context n stuff. Like how a whole lot of writers fucking hated Sir Gawain for being pagan. Who different nations and groups and eras identify with as their heroes.
Sorry I just

Medieval sources on Lancelot's backstory: His parents were the rulers of a French province called Benoic, and the family were the only survivors when their castle was attacked by the evil King Claudas. His father died of grief, and baby Lancelot was spirited away by the Lady of the Lake, who is either a fairy or a powerful sorceress. He was raised in her underwater kingdom with two of his cousins and a bunch of other magical ladies. He grew up in only three years, then went out to discover his true identity and join King Arthur's court. The Lady of the Lake gave him a bunch of magical weapons, and she or her damsels occasionally show up to help him on his quests.
Modern stories on Lancelot's backstory: He's French. We'll explore this by making French jokes.

I love the idea of a knight who only uses a shield. Not because they are a pacifist. But because they want to protect their friends, they have seen the horrors of war. Perhaps they were even a feared warrior once. But now all they want is to be the shield that protects those they care for.
Anyways after further research i have basically described aggravain. Who is my new favourite knight ever
Edit: if anyone sees this and knows a similar character it would be greatly appreciated

on one hand, you can’t really generalize mythology. especially one with as long and varied a literary tradition as arthurian legend has.
on the other hand, agravaine is gay in 100% of retellings. i don’t make the rules. i’m simply presenting my findings. a safe assumption going into any story. you’re probably correct.
