“I suppose it is.” Nicholas agreed with a small smile, looking down at the stack in his arms. “Making up for lost time, you know?” There was so much for him to catch up on. He doubted that he would be able to get to everything that he wanted to read, but he would do his best to get through as much as possible. The woman’s question caught him off-guard, a flush of embarrassment rushing to his cheeks. “I, uh,” he sputtered, unsure of how to respond. Clearing his throat, he began again. “I don’t really mind the genre, so long as it’s a good book. Something to sink my teeth into, you know?”
Tumblr media
There was a lot to consider, really. Juliett nodded as she thought, perhaps for a little too long, but with so much to think about it wasn’t such a surprise. “Hmm...” In a flash-- or rather, as fast as she could limp away-- Juliett scarpered, knowing exactly where to find what she was looking for. She returned a moment later, hand outstretched, offering him a good read. “Take this. Now, don’t be fooled by the author. This is no Secret Garden.” T. Tembarom was a personal favourite of hers, and perhaps some unexpected hijinks would be exactly what he needed.

The library seemed the best way to get something to try and help Christine whilst she was still learning to read. She was better then he had been at that age, but he just wanted to do anything he could to help her. He had only really stopped to make sure sure there was nothing on the noticeboard that he should know, he was still so new here. “Alas I do not think I would be able to. I have my daughter to watch in the evenings”.
Tumblr media
“Oh!” Juliett was taken aback-- she never really knew how to deal with children. She had trouble gauging what the appropriate reaction was; what do children even do, exactly? “Well... congratulations... I think. You must be the first family man I have met. Is it... nice?”

Sam raised a brow, reading and rereading the advert. Certainly, it would be a lovely opportunity to meet the other residents of Hamelton. But then…if either of the Audleys were there, he would be unwelcome at best.
Still, he’d kept himself sane in the trenches with a copy of Frankenstein in his coat pocket. He’d read it so many times, the pages had pulled from their binding.
“I haven’t decided” He said softly, chewing on his bottom lip. “I’ve only just moved and I…suppose I don’t know what to expect.”
Tumblr media
“Well... We are doing Dickens. I expect it will be a lot of sitting... talking... really, I am mostly hoping that there will be cake. Do you think Monsieur Nicholas seems like a cake man to you?” She caught herself, gave herself a little eyeroll. How could he know? He couldn’t have been here long enough. “Sorry, of course, you would not know him yet, would you?”

A momentary wave of embarrassment came over her as Juliett asked whether she would attend.  Truthfully, whenever she was around the librarian Mary felt woefully uncultured.  The facts were simple.  Mary was not an avid reader and the war had made her resistant to anything but light topics of the fictional variety while the librarian’s readings were undoubtedly deeper and more diverse.
“Thank you but…I don’t know that it would be for me.”  Mary looked down to the small pile of books she wished to check out and gave the woman an apologetic smile.  “Not exactly book club material.”
Tumblr media
“Come, let me look.” She gestured to the books in her arms. There was something so fascinating about a person’s choice in literature; it told you everything you needed to know about someone. As for Juliett-- well, she was far too predictable. Her shelves were lined with well thumbed pages from all the female greats, to nobody’s surprise.
“It is not for everyone,” she started, before catching how elitist she must have sounded. “I mean-- it is Dickens, who is much too wordy for me, but do not tell anyone else I said that. Would definitely ruin my image.” She gave her a wink and turned towards the check out desk, hoping she would follow as she started to hobble over.

although he claimed to be a voracious reader,  a fanatic he was not and william could think of only a handful of ideas more worthy of their own circle of hell than a ‘book club,’ whatever that entailed.   but julliet buchard,  with all her french whims and mannerisms,  was charming and thoroughly entertained him.  only a fool would so swiftly refuse the offer,  even if it caused his skin to crawl in anticipation.  “if you ask nicely,  i may be persuaded.  bribes do not hurt either,  given the proposition.”
Tumblr media
“Don’t be silly,” she laughs, batting her hand at him. There was such an charm to William that she had to indulge-- it was his cockiness that made him interesting, that kept him fun; and lord knows, with the town’s blanket of melancholy, she needed some uplifting. “How about this: you will be in the presence of the most interesting and beautiful person in the world...” She leant in with her cane, a delightful grin lighting up her eyes. “Me!” For a moment, she faltered. “Please do not tell Viola I said that. She will-- what’s that phrase?-- have my guts for garters.”

The library was the perfect place to advertise the book club, Juliett thought. She wasn’t afraid to toot her own horn, so to speak, and her knack for finding books (and her taste, nonetheless) was quite excellent. To honour such an exciting venture, it was only right that the advertisement be placed in the middle of the noticeboard. She stood back to admire her handiwork to find someone else looking, too. The perfect opportunity to draw someone in, she thought.
“You will come, yes? To the book club?”

Nicholas made his way around the library, arms laden with as many new releases as he could carry. He took a deep breathing, breathing in the comforting scent of leather and parchment. His troubled soul was at peace once more. Rounding the corner of an aisle, he nearly bumped into another who was perusing the shelves. “My apologies!” He blurted, spots of pink tinting his cheeks. “Catching up on lost time.” He explained somewhat sheepishly, gesturing to the books. There had been little in the way of reading material in the trenches. “Is there anything you would recommend?”
Tumblr media
Juliett was quite proud of how much attention the library had been getting recently. As more people came home, or simply came looking for something new, she was watching books fly off the shelves. This did, however, mean long slogs of restocking in the interim, which would have been a lot easier without strangers almost sending her flying. The shock made her stumble, and thank god the book trolley was in arm’s reach otherwise she would have toppled. “That’s quite the collection there,” A smile spreads across her face at the pile of books in his arms. She can’t be angry at him, after all, not with that kind of enthusiasm. “Ah, well, it depends what you’re looking for. A bit of drama-- or romance, perhaps? I bet you’ve missed out on a fair bit of that, mm?”

“What a positively pretentious introduction this is. I look forward to reading the book to see if the author lives up his his colleague’s praise. Although I suspect this is just another scenario of men form Oxford insisting that their drinking buddies are the geniuses of the modern era.”
Tumblr media
Juliett huffed a laugh, a gruff, low sound; Anna couldn’t be more correct. Maybe she was biased, but so many books seemed ten a penny nowadays. The shelves were full of amateurs trying to make something of themselves as if there wasn’t enough dramatics going on in the real world. “It’s his second work, poor boy. I give it... Ah, no, I won’t ruin it for you.” She gave her a crafty wink. “I will say this: the most terrible thing he’s ever seen is probably mud on his shoes. And the way he writes about women- hah!”

hello all! i thought i’d provide some further questions for everyone, because i can’t wait to meet everyone’s characters!
What is something that people notice when they first meet them?
Do they have any words they live by?
Would they rather be loved, feared, or ignored? Why?
Do they have any habits, good or bad?
What is something unexpected that people might not know about them?
Do they have a reputation? What is it like?

What are their nightmares and dreams?
Her nightmares usually involve her mother. Sometimes, she dreams about the  accident, and usually wakes up in cold sweats at the thought of being bedbound and alone. Her favourite dream probably involves a bed full of younger women. Her worst fear, however, is becoming frail, disabled, and helpless. She never wants to feel like a burden again, especially to those she loves.
Do they do their dream jobs and what are their aspirations?
Juliett pretty much fulfilled her dream job as a codebreaker during the war, but she always dreamed of being a writer or a poet. As for aspirations, she just wants to live a peaceful, happy life.
Are they secretly in love with someone?
She is very reserved about her love life, so some might call her love for Viola a secret. However, she is extremely loyal to her.
What is their favourite scent?
Rather a cliche, but Juliett loves the smell of books, crackling fires, and petrichor. She’s a lover of rich, earthy smells, the kind that take her back to that rebellious child who loved to play in the woods.
What are their hobbies?
She is a big fan of riddles and puzzles- anything that involves brain power, really- as well as reading as much as she can and writing in her spare time. She likes to think of herself as an ameteur poet.
What are they good at?
Her biggest strength is languages. Fluent in French, English, German, and Russian, Juliett is well versed in other tongues. Other than that, she has an excellent memory, a sharp wit, and brilliant problem solving skills.

Did they grow up in the town?
No, she grew up in the south of France, and in fact only came to Hamelton in the last year to live with her life partner, Viola.
What was their childhood like?
From the outside, very happy. However, Juliett was heavily criticised by her parents, and always grew up feeling like an outsider. She was well looked after but never had the support she needed as a child. While her sisters were praised, Juliett was shunned. Things only seemed to get worse after the accident, as during her recovery Juliett became a burden on her mother. She spent a lot of time bedbound before having to learn to walk again.
Do they have any siblings? What are they like? What are their names and ages?
She has two sisters: Charlotte, who is three years younger than her, and Marie-Thérèse who is eight years her senior.. She had a brother, Jean, who died at birth. Her sisters are both very serious, family-orientated women. They are both estranged from her for the most part, although she does receive letters now and again.
What about their parents?
Her mother died when Juliett was in her 20s, and her father is frail and elderly and cared for by her older sister, Marie-Thérèse. Her mother, Marguerite, was heavy handed with high expectations. She was obsessed with making her children perfect, and was regularly exasperated with Juliett’s rebellion, and later, her sickly condition. Her father, William, was easier to get along with- he didn’t quite understand her but he was always closer with Jules than his other daughters. They spent a lot of time reading together, and he was more than happy to spend hours on end talking about his lumber business.
And wives/husbands? Children?
Obviously, Juliett never married, however she does like to refer to Viola as her wife in private. She has a particular aversion to children.
