I see this scene being discussed a lot
Tumblr media
And people always take Gandalf's comment to heart and think "Oh, poor Bilbo would've fainted if he knew!" and completely ignore the next bit
Tumblr media
"He had no doubt that Bilbo knew quite well"
The reality is that he didn't care about its worth, he gave it to the local museum and let it sit there for years. But! He put it to use again when Frodo's life was at risk, and told him to keep it hidden... and to tell no one about it. Bilbo is not as naive as people think, just saying!

The fact that The Hobbit is such a lighthearted family-friendly book, especially when compared to LOTR, actually breaks my heart when you consider that it is Bilbo’s writing. That journey was anything but a fun trip for him. He went through real dangers and horrifying moments. He saw violence for the first time. At the end of it, he lost his love. And he went home traumatized, heartbroken, and forever changed.
Yet when he wrote the story down, he emphasized the more successful and fun parts, and glossed over the depth of his pain and grief when the losses happened (even leaving Fili and Kili’s passing to a throwaway line.)
Because what else could he have done? Nobody else could possibly understand his pain. Bilbo wasn’t like Frodo. He didn’t have a Sam who he shared the experience with and could talk to about it every day afterward, to help him work through writing down the details of the darker parts of the story. And his other friends lived far away and could only visit occasionally.
And the hobbit children were all full of wonder about Elves and dwarves and trolls, so he put the focus on that.
I feel like that was his way of dealing with his trauma.

I don’t spend a ton of time thinking about Gimli and Legolas, but I saw some lovely Gigolas art earlier this week that got me into that line of thought and I must say that the extreme parallelism here really is very satisfying:
Gimli to Legolas (Two Towers, The White Rider):
“You are a Wood-elf, anyway, though elves of any kind are strange folk. Yet you comfort me. Where you go, I will go.”
Legolas to Gimli (Two Towers, Helm’s Deep):
“You are a dwarf, and dwarves are strange folk. I do not like this place, and I shall like it no more by the light of day. But you comfort me, Gimli, and I am glad to have you standing nigh.”
It’s also pretty charming that the formula for light flirting in Middle Earth appears to be, “Hey, you’re a real weirdo, but I feel better when you’re around.”

Fuck and the whole time, in the back of Legolas's mind (of perhaps the very front where he had to constantly shove it down and silence it) was the sea, the whole time and yet he stayed, and he planted and he loved and he sang and he traveled and watched his friends grow old and their kids grow up, all while he was burdened with longing for somewhere else, and finally only one was left, and he was torn in two, between the dwarf and the sea, still choosing to ignore that gnawing ache, but then, the dwarf went with him- and he didn't have to choose anymore. Finally, he was free.

Love the idea that Thranduil is still not thrilled about his son marrying a dwarf (old prejudices die hard for equally old stubborn elves) but as soon as the two land in Valinor, it is on sight for anyone who even looks at Gimli the wrong way. Like, that is his family line you're speaking about and to disrespect the dwarf is to disrespect his son and to disrespect his son is to disrespect HIM. No one's allowed to ask how it was possible for Gimli to even BE here in front of Thranduil without him being like " because he is my son's husband and the gods seem to agree that my son is a special baby boy who can do what he wants. You gonna disagree with the gods? Didn't think so, begone with your stupid fucking questions."

Remember that when they’re massively dehydrated and unsure if Mordor’s water is poisonous, Sam offers to take the risk by drinking the water alone first to spare Frodo…but Frodo immediately shuts down the idea and insists that they both drink it, so that they both will face whatever harm that water brings, together. Those are two hobbits in love.

The fact that Tolkien realized he’d created inconsistency for LotR with the first published version of The Hobbit and then retconned it with the in universe explanation of “Bilbo is a liar,” is never going to stop being both equal parts brilliant and funny.
