If you have issues with almost every female character out there, YOU are the sexist one
There's an astounding amount of people that seem to have issues with almost every single female character and they don't seem to realize they're the ones who have the issue.
If a female character is written as nice, she's called submissive and anti feminist.
If she's muscly and badass, she's too much like a man.
She wants to get married and have a family? Sexist.
She never wants to have children, maybe doesn't even like children? Sexist.
She's attractive? Pandering to male gaze (because fuck us queer women, amirite? We don't like looking at attractive women 🙄). Sexist.
She's unattractive? Pandering to purity culture. Sexist.
If a male author created her, he's misogynist because he's a man, so of course he's misogynist.
If a female author created her, she's got internalized misogyny and has fallen victim to the patriarchy.
These attitudes are prevalent everywhere, but I think, from my personal experience, book communities are the worst. Some of the people here have an issue with almost every single female character, regardless of what she's like or who has written her.
If men can't write women, and women can't write women, who, in your opinion, qualifies for this apparently impossible task? Do you think female characters just can't be done right, no matter who writes them, or how they're written and portrayed?
It's getting exhausting. We as woman are people. We're as different from each other as men are. I don't see why we should be put on some kind of pedestal, or why there needs to be some kind of nitpicking about us.
These people need to just admit they have an issue with women. Yes, they. Not these authors. They.
You know that saying, if you met an asshole today then you met an asshole, but if everyone you meet today is an asshole then you're the asshole?
Same goes here.
If every female character you come across is sexist to you, then you are the sexist one.

The Wise Man's Fear was good?
I know I'm late on this thread but I'd like to hear from some readers. I recently finished the book and I just hated it. Nothing interesting actually happens in the story and apparently, the author's only focus was to stall for hundreds of pages pointing out that Kvothe has the sex, and is very good at having the sex, with a female, all the time, all women want to have the sex with him..... OK Patrick, I get the idea.
This book totally discouraged me to continue the series.
Then I found out that the author is lazy and we will never have the third book anyway.

I didn't like Steinbeck's East of Eden
The characters are too flat. They're either saints (especially Lee and Samuel) or monsters (Cathy and some others). Except for Adam and Caleb who are still caricatures. Their "oh I'm an unloved child and will start behaving as soon as someone loves me" and how this is actually unlocked in 3 minutes in one scene is unbelievable. There are no female characters that are more than backdrop except for the Cathy who is barely a human being.
All that said, there's not even much of a plot.
BTW much of the same can be said for Grapes of Wrath as well, but at least that one has a political and historical statement, so it's interesting from that angle.

[Book Club] "The Atlas Six" by Olivie Blake: Week 3, VII - Intent (Tristain)
Link to the original announcement thread.
Hello everyone,
Welcome to the third discussion thread for the April selection, The Atlas Six by Olivie Blake! Hopefully you have all managed to find the book but if you haven't, you can still catch up and join in on a later discussion; however, this thread will be openly discussing up though (and including) VII - Intent (Tristian).
Below are some questions to help start conversation; feel free to answer some or all of them, or post about whatever your thoughts on the material.
What are some of your favorite characters, parts or quotes? Which parts did you find confusing?
What are your takeaways of the experience Tristian had with Ezra? How, if at all, did that space change your understanding of his abilities or what is to come?
Had you been approached by The Forum as the Six had, how would you navigate their offer? Where would your allegiance or inclinations lie in terms of the missions or ethics of The Society vs The Forum?
What do the last lines in this section suggest about the world and talismans? What dangers or opportunities present themselves with this capacity to operate in "noncorporeal" spaces?
What other questions or predictions do you have moving forward? Who will it be??
Reminder that fourth and final discussion will be posted on Friday, April 29th, and cover everything in the book. Then the AMA with author Olivie Blake will happen on Saturday, April 30th, at 2pm ET.
The announcement for May's selection(s!) has been posted so make sure to get a hold of the books before week one!

Your favourite Crime Thrillers/Mysteries !
Hello everyone!
I'm looking for suggestions for crime thrillers and/or mysteries which really keep you hooked and follow a great plot twist but could be anything in general. I've mostly read non-fiction with a bit of philosophy here and there so this is me trying out something new!
Thank you!!!

Just reread the happy prince after reading the abridged version for school...
In our abridged version the story had a very friendshipy and kindness vibe, our teacher even gave us an assignment to write down 3 incident that cemented the sparrow as a true friend of the happy prince.
Now after reading the original version there is a very obvious gay subtext between the prince and the sparrow. Lines like " You have stayed here too long here but you must kiss me on the lips for I love you" make it just text not even subtext.
Do you remember any other stories where the abridged version just erased a main theme?

Just finished Jade City. It was disappointing.
I heard so much about the Greenbone saga and went in with high expectations. After finishing the first book I was left fairly disappointed and unsatisfied. The characters were fairly developed and the worldbuilding was decent but the story and overall writing left a lot to be desired.
Does it get better or should I drop the series?

Just Finished Childhoods End.... Let's Talk About It!
I heard a lot of good things about the book so I decided to give it a try and I REALLY ended up enjoying it.
I was curious to hear what others thought about the story and deeper interpretations as the videos I've seen on YouTube have... odd takes in my opinion.
This is my first delve into old school science fiction and really my first foray into literature in quite a while so admittedly I'm not that well versed in the culture but I find it interesting I'm seeing such a heavy focus on biblical connotations as opposed to the overall story of the piece.
How do you all feel about the book? Let's talk about it!

'The Descent', by Jeff Long.
I read this some years ago, and remember it having some interesting elements, but long stretches of 'Wait, what?' There was science, superstition, religion and action-adventure crammed in, but I can't recall how it ended, or if the writer managed to pull it all together. Was it as disjointed and jerkily-paced as I remember? Did it work at all?

Translation inserts without ruining physical book
So, I’m planning on buying some manga that I really like, only problem is that it was only ever released in the original Japanese edition, so I can only buy the Japanese versions. I want to buy them and put the English translations in the manga, but I don’t know the best way to do that without ruining the books. I was thinking about using those transparent sticky notes and placing the translations on those, but I’m afraid of ruining the manga. I don’t want to just tape them in, since I’ve heard adhesive can ruin book pages, but I’ve also heard that sticky notes adhesive is weak enough that it’d take quite a long time to ruin any book?
What would be recommended?

Any other readers tired of the recent fashion for fiction books that have flashbacks into the past every other chapter?
I'm really sick of how so many modern authors of fiction write their books in the way that they "weave" the charactor's past and current timeline so that a chapter about the present is followed by a chapter with a flashback into the past. Sure there are a small number of authors in the past who have executed on this technique very well but that's the exception to the rule. Modern Fiction authors seem to think they are being so "literary" by doing this but I get highly annoyed since it's executed usually poorly and doesn't add anything to the plot at all.
I feel this technique should only be used very sparingly and it brings nothing positive to most plots. The fact is that because I'm reading about the charactor in the present chapters, I know that the character survived the past so I don't really care about the minutiae of their past. Maybe if the author made the book so that it started with the past and then the second half was the future, it might be a compelling read but a lot of time what happened in the past could just be stated in one or two simple conversations in the book to justify the present plot.
Some books I just skip the chapters on the past and only read the current timeline chapters and find I didn't miss anything important to the storyline at all by ignoring the author's vanity past chapters.

Pachinko apple tv series
Idk if it's just me but i kind of find the adaptation of pachinko messy because of the going back and forth of the present snd past scenes. I was expecting it to be in a chronological order like in the novel. Also there are so many added scenes (?) like idk if i just forgot it happened in the novel but idk, these added scenes are a turn off for me. And hana is so annoying.

Count of Monte Cristo- Danglars Question
Hello all. I have just finished re-reading this book, and have had an immeasurable pleasure in doing so. While there are many nuanced references that still escape me (I lost the stamina to look up every reference note), there is one major question that lingers for me.
Monte Cristo ruins Danglars financially. I understand how the telegraph manipulation caused a loss of money, but then Danglars begins to suffer a series of financial losses, seemingly unexplained.
Question: how does Monte Cristo cause these series of financial woes to befall Danglars? Or, were these events not directed by Monte Cristo himself?
Open to hearing any other questions or analysis that others have as well!
