That line for me says a lot of things. His face looks like he’s contemplating things and I don’t think it’s just one thing he’s questioning.

MY attention? You wanted to get MY attention? This was about me and not Eddie?

My ATTENTION? This is flirting, he’s flirting with me and he wants my attention bc he’s flirting.

I think he wasn’t prepared for Buck to be so straightforward, they were flirting but it was less what they were saying and more How they were saying it. Making plans to spend time can be normal friends but the slowly getting closer and the way they were talking makes it flirting. But that is very different than just stating Hey I’m Interested In You like Buck did. He’s checking that he’s picking up exactly what Buck is putting down, that he’s not misreading this before he makes the big move.

And yeah there is an element of Me? Not Eddie? But I think that’s also him double checking that he’s not about to start a disaster, that this is what Buck wants.

Tommy might seem more sure of himself but I think he still needed Buck to say exactly what he was feeling and wanting before he was willing to fully put himself out there.

The scene in the restaurant is already the beginning of the show planting seeds to confirm that Buddie is happening. Why? Because why have Eddie and his girlfriend randomly pop up at the same restaurant Buck is having his first date ever with a man? Not only that but stills confirm that Eddie’s attention will be on whatever is going on with Buck and Tommy. It’s obvious he has some interest in that whole thing. If he didn’t really care or have any questions, he’d say hi and then continue on with his date. But he’s literally sitting there with his entire focus on Buck and Tommy. He’s already probably questioning things bc if he brought his girlfriend to this restaurant ON A DATE, then what the fuck can Buck and Tommy be doing here in a date setting? If it’s supposed to be simply platonic between Buck and Eddie, why even have Eddie show up? Sure there’s a comedic aspect to it but he’s LOOKING at them. He’s confused and he wants answers to his questions. Questions that will only multiply when Buck tells him the truth. And even then, Eddie will be all “yeah man I love you everything’s good haha” but still have questions. Questions that he can’t stop thinking about. Questions such as why he’s having these strong feelings about his best friend dating a man that’s similar to himself. And the aftermath of Buck coming out is going to be a key indicator on what’s going to happen between Buck and Eddie. Eddie isn’t going to handle all of this like a “platonic best friend”. He’s going to slowly spiral in the sense where he’s questioning EVERYTHING he has ever known which includes his bond with Buck. It’s so obvious where this story is heading.

Okay but it's objectively hilarious that in the scene where Buck kisses a man and realizes he's bisexual, Eddie's name is mentioned eight times

Well I have some thoughts on that! I think Buck does like Tommy, and there's no confusion for him about that. His feelings for both people can coexist!

My interpretation of last night's events for our chaotic bisexual kind of played out as him trying to get both Tommy's and Eddie's attention at different times. And not really knowing why. I think he was having feelings he couldn't really process because he didn't have the right context for those feelings and hasn't really felt them before.

So call me a clown but my thoughts are that he was definitely feeling jealous of both of them. With Eddie, he's primarily been close with only women outside of the 118, not other guys. Buck's subconscious feelings (not known to him at the time or even fully now) may have been along the lines of "Eddie likes women, I have no competition" and then in swoops Tommy (someone Buck already thinks is really cool and wanted to get to know even if he didn't quite know why yet) and his brain goes "I have competition" about both Eddie taking his new interest's attention and Tommy taking his long time interest's attention.

But then Tommy comes back into focus and clearly shows interest in Buck, so it clicks! This was that feeling! Part of the puzzle has been solved— it's just the rest that isn't as obvious to him yet.

Because without understanding his sexuality, Buck has likely only ever viewed Eddie as a friend even if along the way he has felt things that friends don't typically feel. So what we have right now is an opportunity for Buck to explore his bisexuality as a completely separate thing from Eddie, and then come to understand what he has also been feeling for Eddie without realizing before.

Or I'm completely wrong but only time will tell.

Merlin BBC UK TV Show - A Psychological Analysis Series Part 11

Season 2 Episode 9 - “ The Lady of the Lake”

Writing this post proved to be a challenge as I had to condense all my thoughts and ideas in a coherent manner without it being all over the place.

While providing a synopsis of the episode, I will be highlighting the subliminal themes portrayed here in CAPITAL LETTERS AS WELL AS MY ANALYSIS to cover every aspect of the episode.

Merlin is introduced to the character of Freya, a Druid girl trapped in a bounty hunter's cage (RESTRICTION) belonging to a man named Halig.

Despite Gaius's warnings not to interfere and against a background of a stormy night (INTERNAL CONFLICT) Merlin openly uses magic (QUEERNESS) in-front of Freya to reassure her that he is there to help and frees her, before narrowly escaping Halig.

Merlin hides the girl in the catacombs (THE PLACE THE OVERWROUGHT SUBCONSCIOUS MIND BURIES ALL OF THE PROBLEMS AND SECRETS ) beneath Camelot (SOCIETY) and promises to look after her.

She asks Merlin why he saved her and he says it could have easily been him in the cage (BOTH MERLIN AND FREYA ARE MAGICAL CREATURES LIVING IN A SOCIETY THAT CONDEMNS THEM FOR WHO THEY ARE)

Halig goes to Uther and notifies him of Freya's escape with the help of an accomplice. Uther assigns a detachment of guards to capture them.

The next 30 minutes of the episode becomes the main core of my analysis.

Arthur manages to badly wound Freya in her Bastet form before being distracted by a gargoyle which was toppled by Merlin.( IT IS A REAL COINCIDENCE THAT ARTHUR ATTACKS FREYA WHO HAD KISSED MERLIN A FEW MOMENTS AGO, SIMILARLY TO HOW ARTHUR WOULD ATTACK LANCELOT FOR KISSING GWEN IN SEASON 4 EPISODE 9)

Merlin runs after Freya to find her mortally wounded. (IT IS THE OBJECT OF MERLIN’S HOMOSEXUAL DESIRES (ARTHUR) WHO KILLS THE OBJECT OF HIS HETEROSEXUAL DESIRE (FREYA) )

A heartbroken Merlin places her body on a boat and uses his magic to give her a traditional funeral by the lake. (I THOUGHT IT WAS VERY POIGNANT IN HINDSIGHT BECAUSE ONCE FREYA DIES AND BECOMES LADY OF THE LAKE THESE TWO NEVER SHARE A ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIP AGAIN. SHE IS LITERALLY SUBMERGED INTO THE LAKE WHICH IS A METPHAPHOR FOR MERLIN’S CONCIOUSNESS. LOCKED AWAY FOREVER)

Back at Camelot, Arthur aware that Merlin is upset helps cheer him up before delegating him more tasks. (MERLIN'S HOMOSEXUALITY HAS FINALLY WON OUT AND HE HAS ACCEPTED HIS DESTINY I.E ARTHUR ROFLMAO. PRIOR TO THIS EPISODE MERLIN DID SHOW HINTS OF ATTRACTION TOWARDS THE OPPOSITE SEX. THIS IS EVIDENCED BY HIM ADMIRING MORGANA IN SEASON 1 EPISODE 1 AND NIMUEH IN SEASON 1 EPISODE 4. HOWEVER FROM THIS EPISODE ON, MERLIN SHOWS NO ATTRACTION TO ANY FEMALE CHARACTER WHAT SO EVER. THIS IS EXPRESSED EXPLICITLY IN SEASON 4 EPISODE 8 WHERE THE LAMIA SEEMS TO BE ABLE TO ENCHANT ALL THE MEN EXCEPT MERLIN. GWEN EVEN ASKS WHY EVERY MAN EXCEPT MERLIN HAS BEEN ENCHANTED.)
