Becoming

What does it mean to be a Stoic? I do not yet know and I might never know. But I am pretty sure that Stoicism can teach me valuable lessons and can make me good person and transform my life into something meaningful. Maybe I will find Eudaimonia on the way… I hereby pledge to work on becoming stoic and dedicate myself to the stoic virtues: Justice, Temperance, Wisdom and Courage.

Old Blog, New Me?

I started this blog a few years ago and mainly shared pictures of stuff that I liked. Pictures of nature, tattoos, food, cool clothes, especially denim.... I thought maybe this would make me feel happy and some people would appreciate the pics. Yet everytime I searched pictures I felt really.... unhappy. I felt empty. I just felt like I wanted all the stuff on the pictures but felt that I could not get it. I made myself unhappier by increasing my needs. What made things worse is that I started the blog in a time when I felt overwhelmed in general with every aspect of my life.

I had just moved to a new city to start studying. I moved there, left my awesome job as a tourist guide in the city of Hamburg, which I like to call my home even though I am away from there for more than two years now. I moved to this new town and gave up my job, my city, my friends for a girl of which I thought she was the love of my life – but this were not going well and – I know that I myself am to blame for lots of it – after only half a year I moved out of the flat we shared. A few months later we broke up and I felt more lost than ever.

When I moved to this town I had no hobbies, I felt lost and had no idea what to do with myself. I started studying philosophy (besides my main studies of educational sciences) and I also started working out when I moved to the new town. I started in horrible shape. But I loved it. I started going to mixed martial arts classes once a week. Then I found Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Nearly immediately when I started – even though I got beaten up in BJJ class every single fucking day – I immediately felt a huge improvement in my mood and life. I started to have a sense of purpose in my life. I think I can say that BJJ and philosophy had a huge impact on my life, maybe even saved my life.

I still do not know where I am going or where this blog is going – but I guess BJJ, living a good life and philosophy will be what this blog is about. I decided to leave all the old stuff on this blog – as I still really like it aesthetically and because it reminds me that this is a new start based on an old life and I do not wanna forget where I come from and where I started.
