today I went to a perfume mixing class with my friend. I thought going in that I'd make a perfume that smelled more like vanilla or rose, because those are my favourite scents. Then I smelled the jasmine and it was just like the smell of these orange candles my nan used to have in her house when I was a kid, and she never burned them and just had them on her sideboard for years and years. I used to love smelling those candles and they never lost their scent, even after ten years of being there. And it just became part of the routine of things I'd do when I went there. Go to nan's house and look at the magazines, and read all the back covers of the DVDs but never watch them, and hold all the tiny ornaments in my hand, and smell the orange candles and see if they're the same.
Now my nan is dying, and she doesn't live there anymore, doesn't own the house or anything. I can't go back there ever again to the orange candles, or the two little knights made of metal, or the photos on the wall. But I figured out a way to make a perfume that smells exactly like those candles, and her house, and the way it felt to be a child spending time with my favourite person in the entire world. It's jasmine, rose, honey, tomato leaf.

i like old doctor who, because the plot will be "the earth's core turns people into werewolves" and the doctor will be like "ah yes, it is because of the deep earth werewolf goo" and everyone is like "ohhhh"

Barlowe's Guide to Extraterrestrials was well received and won a couple of awards (and a second edition, I think in ’87?). It took a little while for the sequel to emerge: Barlowe’s Guide to Fantasy hit shelves in 1996.
Even though I am not super widely read in either fantasy or science fiction, Barlowe’s fantasy book is the one I really vibe on. Maybe because it allows him to do stuff like Grendel from Beowulf and Gorice from The Worm Ouroboros. Wouldn’t have expected Gideon Winter, the antagonist from Peter Straub’s odd novel Floating Dragon to be included, but he was. Other surprises are the Psammead from Five Children and It and the Saw Horse from Oz.
One of the coolest things about these books is the fold-out size comparison charts. I love a good size-comparison (and again, this is a big feature of those Petersen’s Guides for Call of Cthulhu, and I am sure it came directly from here).
