Happy that the matter of what to wear was finally set in stone, they made their way to a nearby Cafe for brunch. The air around them was slightly chilly as they sat on the patio, but they both preferred the white noise of the city to the incessant chatter of other patrons inside.
“Orion, may I ask you something. You’re free to deny me answer, but I feel compelled to at least try.”
While the amendment made her nervous, she couldn’t deny Charles’ gentle prodding.
“Shoot.”
“Are you in love with Emily?”
Somehow, Orion wasn’t surprised by the question. Perhaps it was the calm and gentle delivery, but she couldn’t even being herself to do a double-take or act even mildly surprised.
Her silence extended for far too long, so much so that it was answer enough on its own.
“Oh, sweetie. Have you tried talking about it with her?”
She scoffed.
“Of course not.”
“And why not?”
Silence again, but this time, even Charles could tell it wouldn’t last forever. He could almost see the cogs turning in her head, and simply waited.
“Because I rather take whatever I can have from her, for as long as I can, than to throw it all away.”
“But how can you be so certain it would ruin things? I mean, you two seem to be very… compatible. And you are quite the catch, miss Katsaros.”
Another scoff.
“Look, I’m not humble enough to deny knowing that I’m good looking. I have money, I’m smart, I’m ambitious, but…”
“But?”
“But you’ve seen her, Charles, you know her. She’s way out of my league. Hell, I’m lucky she even gives me the time of day, maybe I’m just lucky we’re very compatible in bed.”
Once the dress was safely on the car, nerves truly hit the blonde. She was getting married again, to someone she loved, and not for the reasons she should be getting married for. It felt like the dress was the last piece on a house of cards and she held her breath watching if it would crumble.
“It’s gonna be okay, hon.“
“How do you know that?“
For everything Julien was or wasn’t, he knew how to observe. Even back in the day both women ranted to him about each other, he knew their animosity towards each other would be gone if they only talked. He knew them well enough to understand a bit about how they felt, and it was certain they looked at each other the same way he did towards his sweet Charlie.
He wasn’t always great on picking social cues, or showing restrain when excited, but he was fueled by a mix of faith and knowledge.
“You need to trust me on this. I have some experience on the matter.“
“Jules, listen...you know I was married once already. And I loved him. We loved each other and that...that wasn’t enough. What can I expect from this?“
“You can expect things to be different, because we’re talking about Orion and not Patrick. We’re talking about a girl that is bright and smart, someone that makes you laugh and will run out of a restaurant with you to ditch this dazzling man you call your best friend.“
“That’s kinda the point isn’t it?“
“What do you mean?“
“She’s stunning and bright and handsome. She’s so young, and I’m...me, a broke professor about to marry one of my students because I cannot stay afloat otherwise. Gods, I am fifteen years older than her!“
“Emily?“
“Yes?“
“Do you want this to work?“
“That’s what I just said!“
“Uh-huh, why?“
“I...“
The look on Emily’s face was the one of a deer caught in the headlights. If she truly was worried about their secret coming to the light, the answer was simple; she was worried about money, about losing her home, about disappointing her dad. But that wasn’t the case, and her tired sigh gave her away. She couldn’t keep up the pretense, not with Julien in any case.
“Because I love her,“ she finally whispered.

"...don't you think?"
"..."
"Emily?"
The mention of her name brought her back to reality. She had tuned out Julien as he went into another rant about what she had to do and the way their wedding could be a fairy tale if they confessed their love.
It was a nice thought but was simply not a realistic scenario. Her own feelings were undeniable but the possibility of a romance beyond the pretense was non-existent.
Emily loved her former student. She was still falling in love with every new bit and piece she discovered of the girl through the days they spent together. But that didn't change much. It didn't mean she would or could risk everything for what was most likely an unrequited feeling.
They had signed a contract and that was it. Six months after the marriage, things would go back to normal and Orion would be free to pursue someone her age, her class. She would be able to go back to her ways and the things that made her fully happy.
At the end of the day, fantasizing too much wasn't healthy.
"What was that?"
Blue eyes found the man in the mirror, both of them waiting for the attendee to bring back the dress. He hadn't seen it yet, but he had found a way to entertain himself by other means.
"You got to tell her!" He said, exuberant as ever.
She sighed, knowing he would not stop if she simply dismissed his words. She had tried to be gentle, and so did Orion. But his sense of boundaries wasn't there if Charles wasn't around to take him away.
"Jules, you know I love you, but that's enough."
"Darlin'?"
"This has to stop. No more questions about our relationship. No more assumptions about feelings. It is far too much, Jules. This is not the pink-colored story you want it to be. We're getting married because we have to, because it is convenient for us. Don't make a hard situation harder, I'm begging you."
"I want you to be happy," he said, apparently taken aback by her reaction, as if it was uncalled for.
"I know, and I am so thankful you are my best friend. And I want you here because it will be an important event, but don't push the matter anymore."
Something about her words finally got through him. He nodded, a bit tearfully but smiling when she hugged him.
***
For the longest time, Julien said nothing. He stared at Emily with the final dress in full display and making her look nothing short of royalty. Like a princess of that fairy tale Emily insisted wasn't real.
"So...?"
Concerned by the extended silence coming from Julien, Emily turned to see him. He was standing there, in shock and crying.
"Julien?"
"You...oh my God," he couldn't even speak. "Oh. My. God. Oh. My. God. You look stunning! Oh my God! I can't," he added fanning himself. "I need a moment, and handkerchief."
His reaction, although delayed, made Emily sigh with relief.

Leaning into Orion’s side was only natural by then. Although the night wasn’t particularly cold, Emily would always welcome the girl’s warmth. It was comforting in the middle of the absolute chaos around them, with Julien pushing and prodding; trying to find the seams of their charade,
There was plenty to be found, at least on Emily’s part, and the total adoration in blue eyes whenever she looked at Jaymes should be a clear sign. But just as there was much to tell, there was an equal amount of risk, of offering her heart and be met with the end of a contract. And as much as the professor hated to reduce every moment to such a cold transaction, she still needed the moment.
Something in Orion’s words made the world come to a halt, if only for a second, and Emily looked away to collect herself.
Planning the wedding, moving in with Orion and spending almost every free moment attached to the hip made it easy to believe in the fairytale. But once those details were sorted out, once the wedding day arrived with chimes and whistles, time would actually start running and the trial period would be over far too soon. So, maybe, if Emily could perhaps voice her true feelings, things could be different.
Before she could even try, they had made it into the ice cream parlor and soon they walked to the same spot where Jaymes had proposed not so long ago.
“We’re really doing this,” Emily finally said, focusing on their upcoming wedding rather than whatever came afterwards for them. “Are you ready?“
There were a million things behind that wedding, not just to make it happen but reasons to carry on. And perhaps it was harder to ignore the future when it put Orion in the spot. Soon enough she wouldn’t be the metaphorical heiress of a hotel chain, she would be in charge.
Additionally, if Emily had a decent idea of what the Katsaros were like, they wouldn’t hesitate to find ways to prove their marriage as a farce.
Once again, there was much to find, but little to tell. For the sake of the future they had worked so hard to achieve and goals to reach. And perhaps, even with warm chocolates stared back into Emily’s soul, secrets to keep to protect their hearts.

Calm before the Storm.
Interacting with Julien and Charles was always exhausting. They were lovely men, otherwise Emily wouldn’t have allowed them into her life for so long. Charles’ personality was more subdued, calm and reserved in nature. He was the perfect balance for the bouncy boisterous man that was his husband.
Still, it seemed like Orion and her were under the microscope lately.
Logically, Emily couldn’t blame them. Their situation was anything but normal, extraordinaire since the beginning due to their circumstances, but still. Being looked at as if they were some sort of experiment was far from comfortable. So, after bidding their goodbyes at the restaurant door, the blonde guided Orion away from the place where they parked the car and into a very familiar park.
“Care for some ice cream, Ms. Katsaros?“ Emily asked with a soft smile. “For old time’s sake?“
There should have been some kind of hesitation in that question, the telltale signs of a memory, of an agreement both of them signed. Instead, there was just a playful nature and genuine excitement for what was to come.
“My treat, of course.“

“See, you guys believe it’s all honey and roses with this one, and it usually is, but as soon as food is involved, she all but forgets about me.” Orion joked, accepting the kiss with a smile and gently squeezing Emily’s hand in return before digging in.
The interaction, though small, was run of the mill between them, affection came easy and they didn’t think twice about it anymore. Julien and Charles, on the other hand, were smacked with the sweet gesture. It was one thing to be trying to sell a fake marriage, but the air of ease and the emotions behind their eyes as they looked to one another was… A lot more complicated than that.
As Julien was about to bring such details to attention, Charles grabbed his hand and opened the conversation again himself.
“Say, girls, hare you done with the planning for the wedding?”
“Mostly,” Orion said, wiping the corner of her lips, “it’s just a few details here and there left, but the biggest concerns are out of the way.”
“Actually...“
There was some tension on Emily’s shoulders as she spoke. The reminder of the wedding was foolishly unexpected to her since her relationship with Orion was evolving. They had been planning it for weeks, and yet it usually felt as part of their personal bubble. Going to dates, sharing afternoons filled with lazy make outs and ideas thrown on the air about their wedding.
Talking about it with the guys put things into perspective, made the wedding feel real in a different way. It was a painful reminder of their contract and the limited time they would have as a couple. A scheme of sorts, and the notion turned the next bite of food bitter.
A smile was plastered on Emily’s face as she pushed through the heaviness setting on her heart.
“I’d like you both to come with me to the final dress fitting. I’m confident in my pick, but I’d like a second opinion and you two are welcome to join me.“
Going through the flurry of arrangements was easy with Orion on her side, but there were little details that Emily had done alone. Without a bridal party by her side, some spinets could be...haunting. Having dinner with Jules and Charles was a nice reminder that she wasn’t alone.
“Darling, of course!“
That sent the conversation in a new swell of excitement, and Emily allowed herself to be part of it as she talked with the men. All the while holding into Orion’s hand.

The full on squeal that followed Orion’s words almost made Emily want to run out of there as the man went into a full excited tirade. She couldn’t really blame him, and after a few minutes where he ended teary eyed with delight, Emily smiled at him.
“Don’t tell me this really came as a surprise.“
“I mean, a man has hopes! But you never know with you two.“
An eyeroll was the only response Emily gave him before she finally got a taste of the dish. Even if she had tried, there was no way to stop the moan from escaping as her taste buds exploded with the exquisite flavors.
“I’m sorry, darling. But this time I’m not ditching this plate, even if you were to propose again.“
To take the bite from her words, she leaned towards Orion and kissed the girl’s cheek. She didn’t think twice about the gesture, or the implications of it in the watchful eyes of Julien and Charles.
The first almost squealing again if it weren’t for his husband elbowing him on the ribs. However, Emily was too lost in the short affection bestowed on Orion, and what she considered a wonder of the culinary world as she took another bite from her selected dish.
She was a simple woman with a weakness for food. No one could blame her for that.

Being back there was almost surreal. Last time, her attraction to Orion was already evident, but feelings were something she hadn't considered. Back then she would have laughed at the thought, but things had changed immensely in a matter of months.
The annoyance she felt at the beginning had evolved into something new; deeper, bigger and clear in her eyes whenever she looked Orion. It was sure to betray her in front of Charles, but she hoped to hide it in Julien's over excitement.
"It's been interesting," was all Emily gave to the man; trying to keep things somewhat private.
She couldn't help but hold Jay's hand once she read the menu; settling for the same item of last time, the same one she never got to try. Their wine was already on the table and she took a sip before returning her attention to both men.
"I'm sure you still remember that life, don't you?"
Charles took her words as a chance to go on the details of his marriage. Emily smiled, sipping her wine as she nodded and laughed along with his story; eyes going back to her bride-to-be from time to time.
"You're my best man now, Charles. It's decided!"
"Hey! What about me?"
"For you...I have other plans."
But before she could disclose them, their server arrived with their meals.

The shiver that ran down her spine at Orion’s words couldn’t be helped, and Emily had to bite down on her bottom lip to hold back the needy moan. It was unfair how strongly she reacted to the girl’s voice, her touch and just the implications behind fairly innocent words.
“Yes, Jules. I’m still here.“
Which was a shame because otherwise she would have claimed Orion’s lips then and there. The fact that the heiress was still shirtless and pressed against her back wasn’t helping Emily at all. Still, she put on her most professional voice to handle Julian; trying to end their conversation as quickly as possible. Thankfully, it didn’t take long to convince hi that yes, they would meet them for lunch, and no, they wouldn’t be late.
Although once the call ended, that last bit wasn’t such a certainty. Less so as she pushed Orion into the bed before climbing on top. They didn’t have time to indulge too much, but Emily craved a kiss and she didn’t hesitate to take it. And she didn’t hesitate to leave a mark either; carefully placed to be hidden by whatever shirt Orion decided to wear. There was no need to put them on the hot spot in front of the guys when it was granted Julian’s imagination was enough for that.
“You’re a nightmare, Ms. Katsaros, but I...“love you “I don’t mind.“
As fast as she had pushed Jay into the bed and climbed on top, she was off and getting dressed; black lace an attractive contrast to her skin. Then came the dress, suitable for the cold temperatures of the evening, but still making Emily look like the bombshell Orion made her feel like.
“Hurry up, love. Jules stressed it out, we can’t be late.“

“As down as I always am for spending endless hours worshipping that unfairly perfect body of yours, I’m afraid there is something in the agenda for the day.”
On purpose, Orion let the words hang in the air ominously for a completely unnecessary stretch of time. She took another bite of pancakes, then softly wiped the edge of her lips, then took a drink of Gatorade - of course, before dropping the bomb on her fiancee.
“We agreed to lunch with Julien and Charles last week, remember? And I don’t feel like being hounded for skipping on it.”
They hadn’t seen the guys in a couple of weeks, all too busy between wedding preparations and the endless need for one another. They wanted details and they would get them one way or another, and as much fun as it was to mess with someone as easily to aggravate as Julien, it was also a scary prospect.
They couldn’t escape it anymore, though, and Julien had made sure the young heiress knew as much.
“They have our address, babe. There’s literally no getting out of it.”
Oh, there were plenty of ways to escape Julien and avoid his inquiries for centuries. But with each day things would only get harder, and the day he finally caught them, they would be nothing short of dead. Emily knew as much, and it was clear that Orion did so too.
But they had time before lunch. Time to get as mentally prepared as they were able to, and time to enjoy their little oasis for a bit longer. After pancakes were demolished, the plates cleaned and stored away, and Dax had his morning walk, Emily dragged Orion to their bathroom.
The bathtub was full, steamy and bubbling to keep them there until the water ran cold and time ran out. So, Emily simply sank in her lover’s embrace; trading a few longing kisses, soft caresses that were left at that. The blonde didn’t feel like rushing out of the water, or out of the door, and certainly rushing sex wasn’t in her priority list then and there.
Instead, she heard anything and everything Orion wanted to tell her, and in exchange, she shared some of her passions with the girl. Tales of her childhood, the moment she decided to become a professor, and her struggle to get where she was. They talked; refilled the tub with hot water when it became lukewarm, and extended their time until they couldn’t anymore.
The phone rang just as they made it back to their room; towels wrapped around their bodies and soft smiles on their faces.
“We haven’t forgotten, Jules,“ Em said in the middle of her conversation with the man. “We’ll be there. Our usual place, yes.“
A playful eyeroll was shared with Jay as the blonde dropped her towel; cellphone precariously held between cheek and shoulder as she rummaged in her wardrobe. Two sets of lingerie coming into view, one black, one red, and she held them in front of her body as she turned towards her future wife.
“Which one?“ She mouthed while Julien went on a rant.
No one could blame her if she paid no mind to him right then.

The lines had blurred completely, but Emily couldn’t care less about it. A scheme to defeat the system had turned into so much more. The feeling blooming in her chest was completely formed and she wasn’t able to deny it. The words begged to fall from her lips whenever she stared into Orion’s eyes, and Emily kept falling or rising in love with every kiss.
“You realize I’m not your professor anymore, Miss Katsaros?“ She played along with a teasing tone. “You won’t grace my classroom with all that sass and exasperating challenging attitude of yours,” she continued after placing another kiss on Jay’s lips. “And I’m sure you’re going to drive the next professor mad as well. But I want to hear all about it when we get home and we’re just like this; pondering about what we’ll get for dinner and which one of us has to take out the trash.”
They weren’t in a professor and student relationship anymore, but they were so much more. And Emily wanted to marry the girl while never getting to that moment at the same time. Then, perhaps their time together wouldn’t have to end.
“Now come on, you beat me with breakfast but I still want you as dessert.“
With just a comment, they fell back into their easy routine. Emily whipped the cream; smudging Jay’s cheek with just a tiny bit. A playful gesture that neither of them let grow into something more, not yet or the pancakes would get cold.
“Do we have plans for today or can we close the door to our bedroom and have fun until we’re hungry again?“ The blonde asked over her cup of coffee.

orion-jay‌:
Hair still dripping from the shower and humming to herself, Orion danced her way around the kitchen with a small, permanent smile on her face.
She had woken up at the crack of dawn, as per usual, to go for a run. Leaving the warmth of Emily’s body hadn’t been easy, but if she skipped her morning run, the rest of the day she would be a jittery mess.
Her plan was simple: have breakfast ready for whenever Emily woke up. The menu: scrambled eggs and turkey bacon, berry pancakes, and freshly brewed coffee.
Usually she would only drink a protein shake after her run, but after an incredible night, she figured they deserved a breakfast of champions.
No, that wasn’t a euphemism for sex, though she was tempted since the moment her eyes opened to find Emily sound asleep next to her.
“Shit, we’re out of whipped cream.” She muttered to herself, looking blankly at the contents of the fridge. “Dax, my boy, you gotta remind me of these things, otherwise what kind of man of the house are you?”
“The best kind.“
Emily’s steps  had been silent enough to sneak behind the girl while she looked into the fridge. Taking the chance, the blonde wrapped the younger girl into her embrace, nuzzling her neck lovingly before placing a kiss in there. She hummed contently without letting go even when her nose came in contact with damp hair.
“Morning. I see someone has been busy. Can I help you with something else than whipped cream or is that everything we’re missing?“
They could certainly go to the store and get some, or...Emily could take the carton of heavy cream and whip it herself. It would be quicker that way, so she took the item she needed from the fridge and closed the door as she pulled Jay into her arms. It was both easier and harder to pretend every day because well, Emily wasn’t pretending anymore.
Turning the girl into her arms, Emily finally took the kiss that belonged to her.
“I could get used to this.“
If this was the morning kisses, waking up to breakfast or simply having Jay in her arms, Emily didn’t specify. She didn’t have to.

Nothing existed but them and Emily had no eyes for anything but Orion. She was looking at the brightest of stars in those warm eyes. The heat of a talented mouth made her burn, call out for the girl in nothing more than a whisper. Her hips bucked as the first time of her imminent ecstasy while she tried to ground herself on Orion's shoulders.
Nails dug into the girl's skin, creating marks that wouldn't last forever, not unlike their marriage. But that didn't deter Emily from falling into an abyss of pleasure, from falling as deep in love as she could be.
She called for Orion with broken gasps after that; body shaking with the remnants of a Earth-shattering orgasm. She called for her lover with breathless pleas and closed eyes until Jay was there to kiss her; hold her until Emily was able to open her eyes again. Blue eyes looked at Orion then, as if it were the first time, and the life they were meant to have together stopped being a lie.
A kiss was stolen from the sky and then another until Emily retirned the favor. She didn't stop; couldn't do so, until Orion was calling out to her with the same intensity. Emily didn't stop until they burned and fell together like a shooting star, and she wished for this life, this moment, to never end.

It was something unbelievable silly, but it made Emily truly happy. Just like the girl she had proposed to. The blonde would do anything to keep the smile on Orion’s face, to make her feel happy and giddy all at the same time.
Another kiss was pressed against awaiting lips before they made the rest of the way home. Home. It was definitely sweet and not just because of all the candy they brought with them.
A few minutes later, Emily had different candy on small bowls all over the coffee table, she made the couch a cocoon with blankets and pillows, and she had changed into something more comfortable; one of Orion’s hoodies and a pair of CK boxers. Her arms wrapped around Jay while the girl fetched them drinks.
“Go change, I’ll take these to the table.“
Their movie was to be decided by Orion, but the professor didn’t mind about that as long as she could cuddle with her fianceé all night long.

An affirmative sound was all Emily gave in response, thinking about all the little places that could use some help; like that candy store or the restaurant they had visited that evening.
A block away from their place, and Emily was still giddy about that thought, she stopped the girl by gently pulling on her arm. The same motion made Orion spin a little; just enouh to face the professor, but before she could question Emily’s actions, the blonde had closed the distance between them to place a kiss against Orion’s lips. It was sudden, and Emily had to excuse beyond she felt like it.
Then she did it again, and once again as she laughed joyfully. She was happy to be exactly where she was; sharing a moment of endearing silliness with Orion Jaymes Katsaros. She was happy, and the threat of heartbreak looming in the horizon was simply ignored.
“I got you a ring,“ she muttered as if Orion didn’t see her put the Ring Pop on the counter. But still, the blonde managed to snatch it from the bag on Orion’s hand. “I hope you like it. It’s your favorite flavor,“ she added with a goofy smile as she opened the package and slipped it on Jay’s finger.
It wasn’t quite as flashy as the one Orion had given her, but it was tasteful nonetheless.

Seeing as Emily was taking her sweet time - no pun intended - choosing her selection of candies, Orion decided to also roam the rest of the store.
Gummy worms and gummy sodas were added to their ever growing pile, followed by her favorite kind of jelly beans, the ones that she always got so much grief from Julien for: popcorn flavored jelly beans.
“Wow, you sure take your candy shopping seriously.” Orion teased, returning the kiss as she leaned against the counter. Without moving, she turned her head to look at the woman behind the counter, whom seemed to be having trouble reigning in her smile. “The things we put up with for love, uh?”
“You two make such a lovely couple.”
“Thanks!” Orion said, standing straight and throwing an arm around Emily’s waist. “It’s all her, though, I’m just the accessory.”
“One would say you’re the...arm candy.“
The pun was stupid, but Emily was smiling like the cat that ate the canary. And whatever protest Orion could have was smothered with a kiss. She was content with this side of her relationship; the PDA were so easy now after a beginning that was play pretend. They had gone a long way in a matter of weeks, and the happiness couldn’t really be faked. Sure, the smiles could, but not the way Orion’s eyes seemed to glow with an almost unnatural light.
“I’m just joking,“ Emily said with a short glance towards the lady behind the counter. “She’s an amazing woman in every sense of the world. I’m just lucky enough to call her my fianceé. And you know, movie night wouldn’t be complete without candy, right?“
Another glance at the counter and their pile of sweets made Emily wince. Maybe they went a little over the top; or a lot actually. And maybe she’ll have to run along Orion every morning to make up for that, but it was worth it.
“Still, I don’t think anything is sweeter than her. Who knows? Maybe I’ll propose again,“ she said while grabbing the ring pop to emphasize her point.

It had been the right decision, Emily knew it as soon as she saw the excitement in Orion’s face. Candy could make life sweeter, and although theirs was going pretty good, who could refuse red gummy bears? The professor couldn’t.
She left Jay to her truffles as she wandered through the isles, picking something she liked, going to the counter, kissing Jay and then getting lost between the several displays before doing it all again. It wasn’t her fault that kissing Jay was just as good as candy. They were honest to God giggling, and even the lady behind the counter laughed at their very obvious affection.
What should have been a quick stop wasn’t really that quick, but Emily was truly enjoying herself.
“I think I’m done,“ she said with a nod after placing a ring pop next to their large-ish array of candy. “If you want something else, speak now or forever hold you peace.“
Without being able to resist, Emily kissed her fianceé once again.

Emily shook her head before kissing the pout away, and then kissed Jay again for good measure. It was hard to resist, and she wasn’t even trying. She nuzzled the girl before they started the process of re-dressing.
“You’re my baby then, and you’re getting those things in that order, but you get to pick the restaurant you want. I’m going to pamper you after you carried most of the couch’s weight.“
The decision about their honeymoon could wait until later. Emily never thought about that, but Jay was using the same argument Emily did at some point, and it was a good one. It was going to be their wedding, and their honeymoon.
***
Dinner had been just perfect, and they made their way back to their apartment hand in hand. They were tired, and Emily had a feeling they would fall asleep halfway through a movie, but the professor found herself not caring.
“We need to make a quick stop!“ Emily declared all but dragging Jay into a candy store. “If we’re going to have a movie night, let’s make it special.“
It had been a long time since Emily indulged herself like that, but something about Jay made her feel carefree, and she hoped her excitement would make Orion excited too. They had an entire candy store at their disposition, and there was nothing better than that.
