i actually i am very new to understanding otherkin things, i have a friend of mine who is otherkin/fictionkin and it trys to exsplain it to me but it has a hard time, so it send me to your blog to explain it, what is otherkin? like i understand it is someone being something non human, but like, can you be otherkin with non living things, is it contained to only animals, what is difference between otherkin and fictionkin? what are doubles, how can i best support my friend with it's unhumanity

you can be otherkin with pretty much anything! the only real thing is that liek otherkin defines anybody who's kintype isnt human, which includes animals yes but also things like plants, songs, concepts, objects, even human-like but still nonhuman things like elves. its most common to see animals, yes, but thats really only the surface of what it contains. though not everyone who falls under the otherkin umbrella will choose to call themselves otherkin, some will go with more specific terms

the difference between otherkin and fictionkin is that while otherkin encompasses *anything* that isnt human, fictionkin specifically focuses on beings from fiction. there often is a lot of overlap between fictionkin and otherkin, but notably you can still be human and be fictionkin via being a fictional human character. fictionkin can be specific characters, or a nonspecific member of a fictional species, if that makes sense. someone who identifies specifically as ash's pikachu and someone who identifies as just a pikachu that has no connection to ash could both be considered fictionkin

a double is someone that identifies/is the same fictional character as you. from what ive seen the community is Wildly mixed on how to feel about doubles- some are welcoming and encourage doubles interacting, others are extremely uncomfortable with the idea, some just don't care

i think it would be hard to ask me how to best support your friend and it may be better to ask them directly- everyone will have different wants and needs and comfort levels, even between people of the same kintypes. i myself am very heavily validated by people calling me a beast or monster and using the pronouns it/its and that thing, but not everyone is as comfortable with it as i am (and ive seen many who are actually quite uncomfortable with that sort of treatment). i would just say to listen and ask how they prefer to be treated and seen in their unhumanity- i dont think anybody really minds being asked that sort of thing
