Joseph Michael McIntyre, Michigan inmate 823709, born 1986, incarceration intake in December 2011 at age 25, scheduled for earliest release October 2030 with full release October 2050
Arson, Home Invasion
They came out of the fires that destroyed their homes without physical injuries, but the victims of a serial arsonist say the injuries to their psyches and spirituality remain fresh and open.
A Kent County Circuit Court judge sentenced convicted serial arsonist Joseph McIntyre to 20 to 40 years in prison for a series of fires set in the summer of 2010 that terrorized neighborhoods in Southeast Grand Rapids and Kentwood.
A jury spent only about two hours deliberating before finding McIntyre guilty of eight counts of arson as well as three counts of home invasion.
Assistant Kent County Prosecutor Kellee Koncki said that McIntyre appears to be responsible for 11 or more fires.
“No one expects him to stop,” Koncki told Judge Donald Johnston. “No matter how long he is in prison, he’ll just be older, smarter and better able to get away with it.”
McIntyre had presented an insanity defense, but jury members said it was obvious that the arsonist was in control of starting and stopping his actions.
Koncki pointed out that McIntyre admitted he set fires in part to toy with investigators, the media and the public, and she says his claim of insanity was a ploy as well.
“He was playing the court as well,” she said.
Defense attorney David Dodge argued that his client has no prior criminal record and that no one died or needed serious medical treatment as a result of the fires.
But Johnston exceeded state guidelines in sentencing McIntyre saying it is clear that he needed to be imprisoned to keep the community safe and to show that his behavior cannot be justified.
“People in Kentwood and the Southeast side of Grand Rapids were sleeping with their windows open and forming citizens committees,” Johnston said.
McIntyre apologized to the victims and the community.
“I’m not a monster,” McIntyre said.

Michael David Mosley, Tennessee inmate 548805, born 1996, incarceration intake in 2020 at age 23, sentenced to life, with parole consideration 11/05/2180
Homicide, Attempted Criminal Homicide, Attempted Aggravated Assault
After three days of testimony from more than 20 witnesses, the jury delivered guilty a verdict in the trial for Michael Mosley — a man accused of killing two and injuring another.
The jury found him guilty of two counts of criminal homicide, one count of attempted criminal homicide and one count of assault after about one hour of deliberating.
Mosley was on trial for killing Paul Trapeni III and Clay Beathard, and injuring AJ Bethurum in a fight outside the Dogwood Bar in Midtown just days before Christmas 2019. The medical examiner explained during Wednesday’s proceedings that Trapeni and Beathard were both stabbed in the heart. Mosley’s attorney has argued his client was acting in self-defense.
The victims were college students home on winter break who met up with a group of former Battle Ground Academy classmates to catch up.
Throughout the trial, the prosecution brought in witnesses who saw the fight happen. Twelve different videos of the fight were shown to the jury. Those who testified so far said they never saw a weapon. Mosley is accused of using a knife to stab Trapeni, Beathard and Bethurum.
Michael Mosley’s Criminal History
Back in 2015, police say Mosley was charged in another stabbing incident. Records show he was charged with felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon stemming from an argument about a toddler.
In December 2018, police said he entered a Walmart on Charlotte Pike, walked up to a woman and began violently assaulting her — including punching and kicking her and dragging her across the floor. Police said he was free on bond from this crime when the 2019 stabbing happened.
In October 2021, Mosley was sentenced to 12 years in prison for the Nashville Walmart assault. He was convicted of criminal attempt to commit aggravated assault.
Mosley was allegedly involved in a jail riot in Cheatham County. He was one of six people charged with instigating the riot in 2019.

After his sentences was handed out, he broke down, sobbing uncontrollably as he was led away into secure custody.
Erich Milton Nowsch, Nevada inmate 1171116, born 1995, incarceration intake in 2017 at age 22, sentenced to life with possibility of Parole
Murder, Assault with Deadly Weapon
It was February 2015, when Derrick Andrews drove a paranoid Erich Nowsch to the home of Tammy Meyers where Nowsch pulled out a gun and opened fire.  The wife and mother of four was shot and killed.
During the sentencing hearing, Andrews stood up, accepted responsibility and apologized for his involvement.  "I can only hope and pray your family can accept my apology,“ said Andrews.
Nowsch, however never said he accepted responsibility but only offered his sympathy.  "I want to first offer my sympathy for everyone who is here on behalf of Tammy Meyers before I make any comments or statements,” said Nowsch.
He then asked the judge to delay his sentencing so he could properly prepare because he claimed he only had about two weeks to get ready for sentencing. A motion Judge Michael Villani denied.
Nowsch then said he was merely trying to exercise his rights and didn’t want to be insensitive.  "I ask that you all not mistake the fact I’m asking for my rights by portraying me, I’m overlooking your life. That’s not the case,“ said Nowsch.
Nowsch was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after ten years.  If he’s released, he’ll then serve an additional four-year sentence because the murder involved a gun.
Derrick Andrews will spend at least 10 years in prison and a max of 15.
After those sentences were handed out, Nowsch broke down. Sobbing uncontrollably as he was led back into custody.
A moment that closes the chapter on a major part of this story and one that may bring some closure to a family still dealing with the loss.

The standard procedure should be: when the prisoner leaves the van, he stands still, with his head down and facing the van, waiting for the officer to escort him by the arm.
He's very loose for a teenager sentenced to life. What do you think?
