DESERT LIFE BLOG - palm springs
Growing up, my mom used to watch a program called “California’s  Gold”, produced rather simply for public television by Huell Howser and a friend with a video camera. The program featured both well-known points of interest in California, as well as unexpectedly unique little known California treasures. I can certainly attest that if travel and sight-seeing is of interest to you, California has numerous and varied opportunities!
One of my personal favorite places to visit is Palm Springs. Though one may imagine the heat to be unbearable, it really isn’t. Whenever temperatures are excessive, many restaurants have misters to keep guests cool, not to mention the nights come alive with activity! Evening brings a respite from the beating sun, but also a lively crowd frequenting restaurant and drinking establishments, and even walking downtown window shopping. If quiet relaxation is your preference, the many hotels often come equipped with pools that are still open and enjoyable through the late evening hours. Though I’ve not participated in such myself, the city is famous for their golf courses, as well, and there are museums and desert parks to explore. Another interesting part of Palm Springs is found ascending in their rotating tram. Once atop the mountain, the first thing that becomes apparent is that it’s actually cold, being 40 degrees cooler! From this vantage point, amazing views of the city below and surrounding landscape are just breath-taking! While upon the mountain, there are restaurants to enjoy as well as hiking and horse back riding. For those that vacation in Palm Springs during winter, there’s even cross-country skiing available at this elevation!
Just a few miles outside the city, one can become immersed in outlet shopping or the local casino. Interestingly, there are lavender fields to walk through and various lavender delicacies to taste, during a couple of the summer months, for a unique experience!
With so much to do in Palm Springs, it’s almost hard to imagine many people call the city home! There seems to be a great balance between the offerings for tourists, as well as the local residents. Housing is much more affordable for many than those in more urban locations, schools highly regarded, and the usual common shops and eateries are plentiful. With so much to do here, maybe you’d like to explore this surprisingly awesome vacation spot, as well!
