MEET THE CAVEWINGS
One of the largest dragons to live in the caves and also the most populated, Cavewings are powerful but sensitive dragons that are mostly or entirely blind. In order to navigate the world around them, they rely on their keen sense of smell and hearing. Their wings are also very flexible, allowing them to bend and swerve gracefully through the more confusing layouts of the caves. They can even use them as extra limbs to help feel their surroundings when walking.
In terms of combat, Cavewings are massive and incredibly strong. They are constantly burrowing and digging through tough and sturdy rock in order to create dens and search for tasty minerals. They also sport three large fins along their neck and back that can become very sharp, letting them slice through rocks as they burrow in tight spaces and also acts as protection against falling stalagmites. They have a pair of long outward-faced fangs which help to bite through tough rocks and minerals. Though they have a lot of great physical attributes for combat, Cavewings are usually very docile and tend not to start fights unless absolutely necessary (usually if another colony member is in danger or if their territories are being invaded).
Though Cavewings are typically friendly and won’t usually bother the other dragon species, there is a strange and odd variation of this species that has instilled a strong fear for Cavewings as a whole. This variant Species has been nicknamed: Bloodwings. No one knows how these dragons came to be or why they behave the way they do, but they’re incredibly ferocious and savage. While typical Cavewings live closer to the surface, Bloodwing’s hatred for light has driven them deeper and deeper into the darkest pits of the caves. They have a few physical differences from normal Cavewings: They are almost always a deep shade of black or silver with piercing red eyes. Their fangs, which are much larger, contain a deadly venom that can paralyze their prey, or worse, can cause an extreme infection which prevents the victims blood from clotting. They blend in almost perfectly with their dark surroundings and will kill anything that smells of blood, they have even been seen feeding off their own kind. This grotesque and horrid nature has led them to be describe a monsters and not true dragons by the caves inhabitants. Bloodwings have also left a terrifying reputation for the original Cavewings. Most Cavewings however, are not even aware of their primal counterparts and see the other dragons cautiousness as a sign of respect towards them
Design Notes: Cavewings share common ancestry with Mudwings and Sandwings. They are based on bats and moles with Bloodwings also being inspired by Vampire bats and Komodo Dragons. They are the first of the dragons designed for this little project and was kinda what created this whole idea. It started out as a fun “make a tribe in the actual style of WoF” and the ideas came pouring out from there.
