I've seen a defense for the s5 finale that went like, Gabriel wouldn't consider his fate in S5 as a victory because ending up dead and not reviving Emilie was not his plan.

But here's my counterpoint: would Marinette consider this a win for herself? To have Gabriel venom her in the back and take her Miraculous to make the wish? To cover up Gabriel's crimes for the sake of peace? To have everyone call the man she has been fighting and is the cause of a good chunk of her grief and trauma for a year as a hero? To uphold a lie that can blow up in her face any day now? To be burdened with the skeletons of her boyfriend's family's secrets with him none the wiser? To still not retrieve the butterfly miraculous? To be shown all her efforts and sacrifices to stop Hawkmoth has been futile all along?

Would Marinette call that a victory?
