my greatest moment of september 2023

picture this. you are at a book store in a shopping centre (most certainly not the Waterstones in the O2 Centre, Finchley Road) after attending an art exhibition in the area. whilst wandering around the shopping centre you found a shop worth visiting; i wonder what books i'll find today, you wonder.

after a look around the various sections of the shop, you come across the "manga" section. several bookshelves chock full of various works; one of which you take a look at.

madoka ★ magica. your brother recommended this to you. interesting, but not enough to warrant a purchase. you scan the shelves for one series in particular though. surely they must have it, you think. every Waterstones i've been to has at least one volume of it. your eyes stop at a book, and you take it out.

volume 11 of the nichijou series. 'twas just a rumour that this chain would stock the latest instalment, and yet here you are staring at it. of course they'd have volume 11. the manga section is excuse the hyperbole huge! many works lay on these shelves, it's only natural nichijou would be here too.

one transaction later, you walk out feeling elated. this is the first volume in a long time; the author just restarted it. the collection is now once more complete.

food mmmmmmm

after what some would say "months of pondering on new ideas" yet others would say "stumbling across an image from a few days ago and deciding it would be a good idea to post this to tumblr" comes bimmingham's latest idea:

bimmingham reviews food

and in this instalment of bimmingham reviews food is some food i got from the Japan Centre in Leicester Square for the eye-popping price of £5, all thanks to the hero that is the meal deal.

here you see a salmon and tuna sashimi rice bowl (with supplied wasabi, soy sauce and a lemon) and a 午後の紅茶 "milk tea plus". what you don't see is a tuna mayo onigiri because it's in the bag to the right anyway to the food!

to begin with, the milk tea. personally i didn't really like it. it tasted really odd compared to other milk teas i've had and i probably wouldn't recommend it. on a higher note however, the tuna mayo onigiri was much more up to standard. seaweed was nice and crispy and there was a satisfactory amount of filling. if you find onigiri in any shop i recommend you buy one and try them out, they are what my uncle calls, "the japanese sandwich"

now comes the main course, the rice bowl. the soy sauce and wasabi packets are placed inside of the product, which is a little odd but i see the logistics behind that decision. the fish are presented very nicely, with sashimi surrounding this sort of structure of salmon and tuna twisted together. sort of like a fancy spaghetti, if you will (that probably was not a good analogy but i can't think of anything else right now). the taste? a bit off.

i should now mention the purpose of the red labels you see on the products. i ate here on a sunday, which is usually when many of their ready meals begin to expire. as such, they don't taste as fresh and good but all affected items do get discounted so that's a plus.

anyway it did taste a little fishy but due to the reason explained above it's all good. i've eaten here on other days and found the fish tasted fresher and much nicer as a result so that's all well. the soy sauce did help tone down the "fishiness" and, with the addition of the lemon, add some more complexity to the flavours.

so a great experience. it's not that uncommon to find grocery stores where you can sit down and eat, although the quality of the readily made food you'll find at these Japan Centres is certainly a step up from your sainsbury's and co-op's. they also cook various dishes in house, but i didn't buy any of them. i'll check them out when i come back.

i exit the Japan Centre in Leicester Square with a cup of cold mochi in one hand and a カジリッチョグレープソーダ in the other, feeling nourished and positive. i recommend you visit the Japan Centre in Leicester Square or indeed any other Japan Centre locations.
