thinking about the devolution of the gang from season 1 to season 16
thinking about how dennis used to be a smartass, self-centred, caring, slutty, hyper-emotional, lovable wimp and now, he’s a burnt out, apathetic, exhausted shell of a man who has no idea about anything yet pretends to think of himself as the smart tastemaker of the group, who has a roommate that wouldn’t listen to the word no, who has a twin who hates him and a father who shoots him in the face and doesn’t feel a flicker of guilt
thinking about how dee used to be a grounded, political, levelheaded, witty, self-assured, independent woman with genuine unsullied dreams of being an actress and now, she’s an angry, overlooked, resentful, broken, tired, lonely woman constantly having to prove to herself that she’s not living in her twin’s nonexistent invisible shadow, that she’s not bound to this group of people she didn’t choose, that she’s not weak and useless, that she’s not a mistake
thinking about how charlie used to be a quick-witted, cocky, charismatic, unique, creative, passionate dude with a bit of a crush on a girl working as a waitress in a coffee shop and now, he’s a grief-stricken, frustrated, short-fused, shattered, fatigued, uninspired addict who is trapped in a bar with a father figure that’s slowly giving up on respecting boundaries, somebody who used to be a close friend but then sexually assaulted him and somebody who he grew up with that eventually got tired of him in pursuit of another
thinking about how mac used to be a bitchy, stubborn, outspoken, argumentative, confident, bossy son of a bitch and now, he’s a subservient, struggling for a solid identity, validation craving, spineless, anxious, bumbling husk of who he could have been, waking up every day to live in the authenticity he wasted for decades whilst forgoing the rest of the authenticity he used to hold dear, living with a group of people he stumbles around and has to fight to be seen as not pathetic, if only for five minutes
thinking about how they used to be assholes, but at least they were still hopeful. they were still affectionate, adventurous, genuinely believing they’d make something of their lives. now, circumstances have broken them, approaching middle age in the same building with the same people they’ve spent every day associating with. they make each other worse yet there’s nobody else they could go to. they make each other more and more exhausted and hopeless, but wouldn’t have it any other way

if i was crowley at the end of s2 and i just had my world rocked because some gorgeous lesbians made me realize i was in gay faggot love with my best friend and i had prepared a whole love confession speech and then got told to "hold that thought" while the idiot fucking dumbass i'm helplessly in love with tells me about his plan for us to live in heaven and do angel shit when all i wanted was to kiss him under an awning in the rain and slow dance properly and maybe have wild sacrilegous siren-blaring gay sex with him i would've probably just dropped dead from embarrassment and grief and they would've had to scrape me off the floor into a dustpan and empty my remains into a furnace to be incinerated.

Frank Vs. Russia high rewatch review
It really is like a hardcore Sunny episode. Like just the way it goes. Everyone is correct, this is classic but new. If I was gonna show an episode of Sunny to get someone into the show, this would be a top pick. (For reference, I currently do either Mac and Charlie Die or The Gang Gets Romantic, kinda just based on my mood lol)
Episodes of Sunny that explain best why I love this show and dive so deep into it, this is definitely top threeten three? ten. *pulls out my spreadsheet (not a joke) uh ywah top three. I think it has more or less everything I would need to bounce off and provide examples of my favourite things about this show. And to properly exhibit all the characters with clear evidence. And this is a ‘powerpoint for the timeline of development’ episode.
The S.I.N.N.E.D. System. Just, fucking jesus christ we actually like got The D.E.N.N.I.S. for Men. That’s like literally what we got. And there was no heterosexual explanation for it.
This episode is just gay. Like even the chess plot ends up with anal beads up a guy’s ass. How is this not the gayest episode of Sunny of all time? Why is this the episode where Mac is being catfished by Dennis. How’s that a great descriptor for this episode.
I also REALLY love the style they went with here with the opening being the end from a different POV. It’s just really fun. And the Charlie stuff oh man oh boy okay we can’t talk about it now we can’t. But jeez.
Alright, really good. Real good. God. Good. What’s in the texts what’s what are they just so many sexts is it just so gay Mac can’t believe ‘StraightDennis’ could have sent all that? Is he just being annoying ? Who knows !! But there’s texts ! Lots of Texts!!! Between Dennis as a pretend man and Mac as a guy who canonically sucks ass at texting and can’t read tone.. oh! So lots of hole pics then?
I love the end screen here, the way we thought they were fighting, just Charlie so happy for Frank grabbing and yelling and cheering. I love him god I love him.
Also: I have literally never been happier to announce I doubted and I was wrong. Like wow, I got baited by them fr. Only promoting the Chess plot and hiding The S.I.N.N.E.D. System and not showing any Johnny stuff. They got me so bad.
Tumblr media
They had a gay Tumblr Sunny blog doubting the episode that confirmed queer Dennis would be very gay.
5 star episode, like this somehow is an all time and we’re living through it.

mac growing up in a house where he’d get burned with a cigarette lighter if he was too noisy and talkative. mac growing up with parents who can’t stand him. mac growing up trying to be the sort of kid his parents could love and still, they don’t
mac as an adult, finding himself and his identity and living truthfully… and his friends immediately calling him annoying. mac, having worked for decades to allow himself to shed just one of the masks he’d put up, coming out as gay and trying to be authentic for the first time, and getting shut down by the gang for it. “treat it like a baby” “ignore it”.
after a whole childhood of being punished for being himself, shaping who he is at his core into something he’s not to please everyone around him, and the first consistent response he gets when he just lets himself be gay? is that he’s annoying. that his friends hate him. met with eye rolls and exasperated sighs when he gets so viciously rejected for hard work he put in for the sake of the gang. met with silence when he asks if his friends even like him.
it’s the same silence luther always gave him after telling him he loved him. it’s the same silence mrs mac always gave him, always. it’s the burn of the cigarette lighter when he talks too much, it’s the claw to the face when he’s anxiously asking for approval. it’s the apathy he’s met with for trying to be the best he can for everyone around him.
repeating cycles. patterns. themes. nothing he does is ever good for anyone. not his parents, not his friends, and not even for himself. christ, he’d even be taught that he wasn’t good enough for god, just because he’s gay.
and then we wonder why he doesn’t accept donald’s affections? then charlie wonders why he doesn’t? we wonder why he’s delusional, why he lacks self awareness, when all he’s doing is believing the stories everyone has ever told him about himself as truth.
this man doesn’t belong in a comedy. he belongs in a tragedy.

ik they are totally just gonna drop the Johnny thing but i think it'd be SO funny if dennis finally broke and told Mac he loves him and Mac was just like "look that's nice and all but I'm with Johnny" like i think dennis would have to walk into the ocean at that point
