Lining up my reads for the next 3 months, something to get me through my gen surgery rotation and suggestions for binge-worthy novels would be extremely welcome!

thinkin about a baby of my acquaintance & how when her parents are hanging out & chatting, she'll almost fully participate in the conversation--politely watching who's talking, saying something approx the same length & tone of what her parents are saying, occasionally using a questioning cadence & looking at someone specific for an answer, laughing when they laugh--doing everything except actually using any recognizable language

im sorry but what was the POINT™️ of whitewashing your yousef when you werent going to do something with it that had a proper PAYOFF??? like when you weren't going to take it anywhere???? when the childhood-friends-to-lovers thing was an undeveloped nominal thing at best??? and when you weren't going to make him the kind of Unproblematic White LI that'd be melting hearts/have people root for them across the board by actually Trying??? ALSO when you were already the whitest remake cast wise???? AND ALSO when you introduced a brown man in the season and relegated his role to a token character and his storyline to a harmful ugly mess???? W O W

Ultimately I think España’s biggest flaw this season was the same thing as every other Sana season, which was 1) not knowing how to properly engage with their main character or their lives outside of whiteness and cultural Christianity and 2) not understanding the ways in which even “good” white people need to be held accountable for the harm and trauma that they cause

This season more than anything else made me realise how much Sana ressisted the "model minority" framework, and what a disservice the remakes do when trying to "soften her up". To me, the finale is reflective of exactly that. The show expects Amira to be constantly apologetic and "quiet but powerful" because it's "realistic". Blending into the background as her white friends celebrate.

I also like. Don’t understand the messaging of the season when it comes to racism and Islamophobia, because... nothing happened
The girls never apologized or grew from their prejudices and white moderate apologism, and Cris even ended up being right about hers (re: Dani and Amira). Patri ans Ester were also right about Dani and never were told about themselves onscreen, just Dani playing it off as them being at “Muslim 101.” Dani made an Islamophobic “joke” that was never discussed. Las Labass existed to talk about key issues in the beginning of the season that never came to fruition (including Amira’s 5 second struggle over the hijab). The school just let students vandalize the banner and take Amira’s speech and that was apparently the end of it. Dilan mentioned being treated as an Other once. We never got a conclusion to Mama Naybet and her job
The season began with Amira’s strong sense of justice around racism and Islamophobia and even delved into how she personally has gone through various stages of combating discrimination. It introduced a beautiful idea of anti-integration as survival and complicated a lot of narratives of struggle and choice. But then... did nothing! There was no resolution to any of the racism or Islamophobia Amira faced. It was like the show presented it just to say “this happens 🤷🏽‍♀️ [shrugging girl emoji] and what about it?” There was nothing uplifting or justice-oriented about it. Hell, as much as i loathe that shit, there wasn’t even white centrist multiculturalism propaganda in there a la the other Skams!
What kind of message is this supposed to send to young Muslim women and/or young women of color? That microaggressions are a part of every day life and you just learn to live with it? That even when you believe in justice the world will best it out of you? That it’s not that bad when it’s coming from your white friends and colleagues? That you can’t change the status quo so don’t even try? What was the REASON?
They took away Amira’s voice and they beat her down and that’s the lesson they want us to walk away with. After 3 seasons of white girls getting to have powerful stories where they spoke truth to power, the main takeaway for Amira was essentially “know your place”

Hilarious how the most full circle thing this season was papa naybet driving nora to alejandro's house to stop him on his way to the airport, and the pome then returning the favour by driving his daughter and her friends to the airport to catch a flight
