i think one of the most important things when it comes to shipping in general, and/or multishipping in particular, is the ability to say "i don't necessarily think this one ship is more compatible with each other than the other, this one is just more personally interesting to me" and to go from there
devlin (to imogen): we’re going to punish you for stealing but let it be known it has nothing to do with you being a woman. we respect women here but you DID steal from someone and stealing is wrong
rambling i was gonna just leave in the tags but instead it’s just an. addendum or whatever.
its not hard to notice. that jenn nielsen has a habit of… making weird comments abt characters appearances (hence my previously mentioned Counter). and its more than just intentionally unpleasant characters like the pirates or turbeldy described as fat (sometimes p rudely too).
like. i can almost excuse referring to a character as “not very pretty.” because in the contexts those have been used (imogen and jean the cook), it wasn’t intended to be rude. and ofc it’s fine and good for characters to not have to be conventionally attractive. but it does bother me that it’s a trait that the author deems Notable for these female characters.
but it’s not uncommon for random one-off characters (and/or Bad Guys) to be described with traits such as scars or large features or blemishes and it’s meant to get across how Bad And Nasty they are (i don’t remember enough about the later books to say with absolute certainty but i’m pretty sure Lump is an egregious example of this)
and you could argue that it’s jaron’s perspective and he’s a rude guy, and like. sure maybe. i haven’t read any of her other books to compare. but that doesn’t change the fact that the intention of giving these characters these features is to highlight that They’re Bad/Weird/Gross/etc. regardless
as i’m reading the runaway king, particularly the part where we’re with the pirates, i’m just finding. there are so many little moments of various pirates (usually background pirates) being described as large and fat. and it’s hard to put them on the Weird Comments counter bc it’s like. yeah characters can be fat. people can be fat that’s Fine. nielsen’s not writing particularly weird descriptions or insults (as she tends to do). it’s just that the only fat people we’ve seen in ages are pirates who are clearly meant to be made out as Bad and Gross.
and now that i’m thinking about it are there any fat characters mentioned that are like. characters we’re meant to like? ones who arent intended to have a certain Vibe to them??
