There is only one Mainstage, but in the15 years since we’ve been coming to the theatre, we’ve seen the Belfry go through a few stages – the growth kind, that is. As a volunteer in the old shoebox-sized concession, I warned friends to keep their coats on during performances in the drafty (pre-renovation) building. As a ticket-buyer, I recall lining up in the rain outside before we had the luxury of a lobby. The Belfry is through the awkward ingènue stage now and on to the role of theatre doyenne with its extra performance space and reception area. Through it all, there was one constant: fine performances. Buying a ticket for a Belfry production has always been one of my most risk-free entertainment decisions. The Belfry has earned my trust as the place to go for theatre excellence. Behind the scenes, the staff pull it all together with such exuberance and style that you never see the sweat.

The last time I visited the Belfry Theatre, I saw a hanging photograph I hadn’t noticed before. It’s a1920 photo of the Emmanuel Baptist Church that has evolved into the Belfry Theatre. Staring at the picture, I marvelled at the vision required to buy an old church and convert it into a contemporary theatre. That’s what I admire about the Belfry today – it’s a theatre company that establishes a vision that might seem out of reach, but then finds a way to make that vision a reality.
