Perfume layering 101: Create your bespoke scent
Over the years, scent has evolved to an expression of mood, character and style. Much like how women wear clothes, wearing fragrance has become a part of a person’s distinct personality, uniqueness and grace.
Fragrance Layering is a more affordable and creative secret to creating your own unique signature scent. It involves using 2 or more different scents to create your own, tailor-made fragrance.
WHAT TO LAYER
For fragrance layering newbies, you can go for your favorite scent and layer it with another scent containing the same ingredient. For instance, if your favorite fragrance has lavender that is warm and a bit strong, you may choose a fresher scent with lavender to lighten it.
If you are feeling more adventurous, go for complementary scents that go well together across fragrance families or within the same family. Generally, there are 5 fragrance families: Fresh, Fruity, Floral, Spicy and Woody. Woody scents reflect the earth, woods, roots and leaves and are said to work well with floral, flowery scents. Spicy scents tend to have warm, exotic, spicy and heavy richness. Fresh fragrance on the other hand, smells clean, and light.
A floral scent as Jo Malone Peony and Blush Suede Cologne for example, combines perfectly well with a woody Jo Malone Wood Sage and Sea Salt Cologne. It’s like giving a warm feeling to spring!
SIMPLICITY IS KEY
Keep your layers few. There are 3 layers of a fragrance, much like a 3-layer cake. The Top Note that you smell right away and disappears easiest; The Middle Note which is the heart of the fragrance; And the Bottom Note which is what stays as the other notes have faded. Too many or too heavy layers may pollute not only yours but someone else’s nostrils.
A safer choice is a combination of light and strong scents. Our 3-layer cake has different flavors per layer, you have to consider if the scent goes well with the different layers.
In spraying multiple scents, put on the heavier scents first so they don’t overpower the lighter ones. You may also need to spray more of the lighter scent versus the heavier. However, it doesn’t mean you have to double your regular number of sprays. Your spray number should remain the same as when you are using only one scent.
Layering doesn’t necessarily mean using 2 different perfumes. If you are using a shower gel or body lotion of another scent, then you are already doing simple layering as well. Cool right?

Feel free to experiment and mix different scents to get to that one bespoke fragrance that truly reflects your personality and style. You may get a few incompatible combinations but it’s part of the adventure to get that one scent that defines you. Makeup Tutorial: Baking
This has been the year of professional makeup techniques blowout, as makeup artists and beauty bloggers revealed exclusive makeup tips never before previously shared with the public. One thing’s for sure, all that contouring, strobing and non-touring have allowed us to experiment with the very reaches of makeup techniques and has definitely done favours to the cosmetics industry. Today we’re demonstrating a new makeup application technique that’s taking the beauty world by storm, baking makeup.
Baking makeup has been used in the industry and by drag queens for years now. With this technique, you “bake” your concealer by applying products and allowing them to sit on your skin before blending in a way that provides a smooth coverage and also highlights important facial features. It’s like contouring and highlighting, but taken to the next level!
Here’s what you’ll need:
1. Translucent powder
The Diorskin Forever & Ever Control Invisible loose Powder is an important tool to bake your face to perfection. It guarantees a long-lasting matte result with a weightless finish on the skin.
2. Pressed powder
The MAC Prep + Prime Transparent Finishing Powder / Pressed is needed to complete the baking technique! Purpose of it? It is to reduce shined it's suitable for all skin types.
3. A fluffy eyeshadow brush
The NARS #40 Eye Shadow Brush deposits the perfect amount of pigment for a masterful sweep of powder.
4. Concealer
Next up, the last thing that you need to master the baking technique is the Bobbi Brown Intensive Skin Serum Concealer. It lightens, brightens and evens out the skin tone under the eyes.
Here’s how it’s done in 5 simple steps:
1.You’ll want to start off with a clean and well moisturised base, so apply a hydrating eye cream to smooth out your skin and to reduce any visible fine lines. Apply a thick concealer to your under eye area, starting at the apples of your cheeks, applying the concealer in swift, upward motions. Blend your concealer in with a damp sponge.
2.Next, apply more concealer. Yes, the more the merrier when it comes to concealer application with the baking technique! A sheer concealer will give you a smooth and flawless finish, locking in the layer you previously applied. Blend your concealer in well with a damp sponge, making sure you cover any lines or cracks.
3.Take your fluffy eyeshadow brush and dust a layer of translucent powder over your concealer. This is an important stage in the baking process that shouldn’t be missed as it will help to set your base.
4.Now for the baking part! Take a makeup sponge and dampen it with setting spray. Dip your sponge into the translucent powder you applied in step 3. This will help to pack your translucent powder. Leave your concealer and powder to “bake” for 5 to 10 minutes, then sweep the translucent powder off of your skin using your fluffy eyeshadow brush.
5.Finally, take your fluffy eyeshadow brush and lightly dust a pressed powder over the area to add more coverage and to blend away any harsh edges.
There you have it, your concealer is baked and your skin is now ready for you to apply the rest of your makeup! Bare in mind that the above routine isn’t necessarily restricted to your under eye area. Treat baking as a highlighting technique and apply the process to other parts of your face that you’d like to highlight, including your cheekbones, jawline, forehead and the bridge of your nose.
