Fair & Lovely vs. Dark is Beautiful
#2023MITSloanBrandingSA
Emmanuel should focus on more public figures to talk about this issue. She is running a very lean organization and it is not clear that she would have the desired impact by running petitions such as the one involving Emami. Although there is a risk of alienating women by celebrity taking away from the concerns of average people, there is also very high value in showing that women of all skin tones can and do succeed without conforming to the existing standards.
Getting into the minds of customers and relating to them in thorny subjects involve utilizing an array of subjects and people in talking about the issue; and having successful people of all tones is a powerful tool to get them to unite around changing their views on how to look or act.

Four Products: Predicting Diffusion
2023MITSloan2022SBrandingSB
The ranking is below:
Synthetic Surface:
There is actual PMF for an improved synthetic surface for horseracing. Increasing the racing lifespan of horses is a very important value add for owners and Polytrack has already been established in racetracks in England. Convincing track owners in the US will take some time but with proper messaging and testimonials from owners in England should allow them to grow quickly in North America
Stave Jigsaw Puzzle:
Once people notice the innovative new puzzle, they are captivated by it which shows that there could be actual PMF there. Note that this is a consumer innovation with low ticket thus it would still be very difficult to scale. Moreover the competitive landscape is fierce and the differentiation might not be enough to build a true moat
Collapsible Wheel:
A very interesting innovation that has attracted the attention of big brands. However, the development cycle is too long and they should have created an MVP that they could sell in a much shorter timeframe. Mass production of wheels would be costly without guaranteed contracts and the sales cycle needs to be much shorter to achieve scale.
Peanut Butter Slices:
By far the least likely product to succeed among the four. First, the inventor hasn't had any indication that people actually want or demand the product. Instead of focusing on how to make it easier to consume without sticking to plastic, he should have made sure there was actual demand for the product. There also hasn't been an indication that it will scale since the initial rollout.

Singapore Airlines, Want To Perfect Your Company's Service?
2023MITSloan2022SBrandingSB
Singapore Airlines provided customers with value beyond typical utilitarian forms by focusing on customer experience and innovation, and differentiated through superior customer service. The airline placed a great deal of emphasis on creating a unique and personalized experience for passengers. They were extremely thorough on whom they hired as flight attendants by closely following their each action during servicing a flight as well as creating the "Singapore Girl" image that has been an incredibly important Branding exercise. Note that some of their strategies would be difficult to establish today as sensitivities evolved.
The airline viewed customer service as a key differentiator and made it a priority to consistently deliver a high level of service across all customer touchpoints. This included investing much more heavily in training and development for its cabin crew members compared to competitors. Instead of becoming a government backed entity, Singapore Airlines saw itself as a full service company by serving its customers a luxury experience with free drinks, free headsets and abundant choices of meals. They also fully took advantage of the perception of exotic and warm culture of the region and created an ambiance vastly superior to that of any competitors' that were almost soulless.
