Was Odette poor or rich? I guess poor because the fire was on stage not on her šŸ  house right that it will burn her money?
Oh, I can actually answer this! (I havenā€™t posted to this blog in over a year, or something, but got a few asks so time to rise from the dead!)
So Odette is definitely poor. (unless you want to write a story about her being secretly rich or a uncle dies and leaves all his money) Most likely she was never rich, because girls who got into ballet werenā€™t wealthy or high class, they were often doing it to escape poverty. Then after the fire and her injury, keeping up a job would have been difficult, hence why she would need to work two jobs just to get by, and all of that with a disability.

Yeah, I actually forgot how much I like Odette. Funny that.

My thoughts :)
I decided to just write here because I went past the 500 mark in asks... Sorry XD I absolutely loved the movie :') Its kinda sad how Odette hated children especially orphans but later on a little girl changed her mind and I think that was a sweet thing :) I personally have my head cannon where Odette and MĆ©rante were together but Odette finds out she's pregnant and tries to surprise him after the big dance, but never do because the accident and she suffers a miscarriage and breaks up with MĆ©rante because she's crippled and she can't bear to loose another of what she loved. When she loses Felecie and clenches her stomach, It just reminded Odette that she lost another child she loved and then it reminded her of the unborn child she was so eager to care. After years of being crippled and alone, she could be now barren (usually after Miscarrying, you have a rare chance of having children or no children at all) and becomes cold and hating children because shes so upset how she couldn't have a child of her own, and especially hates orphans because they were from woman who didn't even want a kid but easily got pregnant other than her, with this is, it's a very Angsty backstory for Odette and maybe MĆ©rante, but it has a sweetness of Odette and MĆ©rante getting together and officially adopt the red head and maybe... JUST MAYBE... She can bare children? Pfft who the hell knows ?? :) The thing that kind of makes me confused is.... Why did she keep the red ballet shoes if it brings her pained memories? Anywhoo this is my personal view but I absolutely love your head cannon and it definitely is beautiful

Everything Wrong with Ballerina (2016)/Leap! (2017)
Tumblr media
Ā  Now if you love this movie like I and a few others do, thatā€™s awesome! However, this list (that can/will definitely be added onto by other fans), is dedicated to all of the weird inaccuracies, story choices, and other assorted faults that have left us fans scratching our heads and critiquing this movie inside and out.
SPOILERS AHEAD
ā€¦
1. POP SONGS, POP SONGS, POP SONGS
Ā  In this lighthearted film about a couple of orphans who escape their home in 19th Century Brittany, France, one might think that the soundtrack for this film would include some instrumentals that sound a bit like a ballet or operaā€™s performance music. While some pieces from the soundtrack, like ā€˜The Liberty Chaseā€™ or 'Escaping the Orphanageā€™ pull this off as well as they can, this movie makes the risky decision of using pop songs like 'Rainbowā€™ by Liz Huett, 'You Know Its About Youā€™ by Magical Thinker, and 'Confidentā€™ by Demi Lovato. Even Sia gets a song in there!
Ā  Most of these songs were written for the film specifically and while they match the optimistic themes of achieving oneā€™s dreams, they donā€™t really fit in terms of the time period. For example, during Felicie and Camilleā€™s Dance Battle, it might have serviced it better to have a symphony of violins, violas, and a piano playing as they danced, instead of Demi Lovato singing about confidence. They more intense the fight gets, the harsher the strings and keys of the instruments could get for instance, to build tension.
Ā  Using more instrumental music made just for this film mightā€™ve helped Ballerina gather more of its own original identity, outside of 'cute little film for kids, but maybe not for adultsā€™, which film audiences get ALOT of these days anyway. One can still have 'Cut to the Feelingā€™ by Carly Rae Jepsen as the end credits theme, but music plays a HUGE role in films and should be able to match whatever aesthetic youā€™re going for.
2. Speaking of Camilleā€¦
Ā  Kids and teen movies typically have that one popular girl whoā€™s usually an irredeemable brat who never learns, never tries to show any kind of compassion, and does little to nothing to change (think teen movies like 'Mean Girls 2ā€™, 'Taking 5ā€™ or 'Bring It On: Fight to the Finishā€™). Thankfully, every now and then, we get characters like Pacifica Northwest from Gravity Falls and Camille Le Haut from Ballerina, in which we see that theyā€™re not too far gone. Unlike the downright nasty brats one might find in other movies for younger people, Camille does have a heart. She just needs that special moment in which she can show it.
Ā  Unfortunately, we donā€™t see her as much as we could have. After her initial meeting with Felicie, in which she comes off as high and mighty as most popular girl characters often do, we donā€™t see her again until she and her mother, Regine, confront Felicie later. By that point, Felicie has already trained quite a bit with her custodian, Odette (who also cleans the Opera), but not once do we ever see Camille. Why canā€™t we see her be suspicious like what we see with Regine when she asks about the mail? Not once did she ever pop her head out of her studio and think that there was something weird going on with her new servant girl? Not once did she ever notice her dancing and wonder 'hmm, why is she dancing so well alongside my other cleaning lady?ā€™
Tumblr media
Ā  Itā€™s not hard to understand why sheā€™d be feel such ill will towards Felicie, especially since her identity theft was going on right under her nose! Thankfully, both girls had apologized and made up by the end. But still, if I were Camille, I know Iā€™D be at least a little suspiciousā€¦
3. Felicieā€™s Denim Shorts
Ā  Why is it that every single character in this movie has a (kind of) historical costumeā€¦
Tumblr media
ā€¦except Felicie? Granted her knee length civilian skirt looks alright, but why do we have blue shorts in a film set in the 1870ā€™s/80ā€™s?
Ā  Did the animators think animating a dancing skirt was too much work? This film was made by L'atelier Animation. This was technically the first film project they ever completed, and while no first try is without its faults, blue shorts donā€™t have a place in 19th century France.
Ā  One of denimā€™s first appearances as clothing was as pants on those who traveled to California in 1849 and 1850 for the California Gold Rush. However, this did not necessarily change the societal norm of women and girls wearing dresses and long skirts during this specific century.
Ā  In fact, most, if not, every time period, including the 19th century, has had some kind of dress code that was to be followed and taken seriously. In a movie like Ballerina, we have men wearing trousers, top hats, walking canes, cravats, etc. In turn, women like Odette and Regine wear long skirts, done up hair, and some kind of corset (except Odetteā€™s is over her top and Regine is probably wearing one because of how thin and proper she is), etc. Historically, both sexes wouldā€™ve stood out like sore thumbs if they didnā€™t dress for the appropriate occasion or time of day. If Felicie had been in any other 19th century animated film, like The Boxtrolls, An American Tail, etc, she wouldā€™ve stood out like a sore thumb herself, just with her shorts alone.

I did it, oh my gosh! I made 3D fan art of the man! I tried to make him look accurate to the movie but I added some aspects of my own art style as well.
I am super happy with how this turned out, heā€™s the first sculpt I ever made. This was done in ZBrush.
MĆ©rante is the ultimate man. I love him a lot and I was super excited studying his design by scultping him.
Now I have a model of him which I can mess around with! Haha!

Ā  I doubt Ballerina/Leap! will ever have a sequel, but if it were, Iā€™d want to see more of Felicie, Nora, and Dora together. I appreciate genuine friendships and friendly squads, especially in movies, and wouldnā€™t mind seeing these threeĀ  bond as they grow into young women.Ā

Headcanon: MĆ©rante's cane has a sword within.
This is my first headcanon I share with you, but I must say that is a little nuts.Ā
So, the first time I knew from the existance of these canes was because of the movieĀ  "The adventures of Tintin, The secret of the unicorn" in which the villain has a cane with a sword within.
Tumblr media
And letting my imagination fly I wonder if they really exist; they do.Ā
Looking in the web I found these canes like MĆ©rante's:
These have descriptions from the shop that sell them:
Gambler Sword Canes for sale feature a handsome and ornate design. The popular Gambler Sword Canes feature a gambling motif with card suits detailed in the pommel and My Good Luck Charm engraved on the blade. The highly detailed head of the cane is lavishly plated in real sterling silver.Ā
Cold Steel Sword Cane with Stainless Pommel is 37 5/8 inches overall. This unique and elegant sword cane has a 25 Ā¾ inch, 1055 carbon steel rapier type blade with an extremely sharp point. It has a polished stainless steel pommel handle which is manufactured of 6160 aluminum. The head of this cane may be removed so it can be engraved or personalized. These canes feature a fiberglass composite shaft that is virtually indestructible.
So the headcanon is that in case of being forced to pass across a dangerous street of Paris, and being assaulted by thiefs, he has the chance to defend himself with a non-expected sword within his cane. Also he has a little hobby to do fencing in his free time (if he has free time of course)
Well...what do you think?

We may have different thoughts and headcanons on Ballerina/Leap! and thatā€™s fine. But can we all agree that Camille is anything but subtle?Ā

Okay but how is Odette any better than Regine all her training methods basically boil down to shoving Felicie onto some death contraption and praying sheā€™s competant enough to not get killed or horribly injured like that pirouette machine??? Balancing her on a rolling barrel?? Making her jump backwards up a staircase?? Forcing her leg up past its limit?? Putting her en pointe after like a week?? Sheā€™s flippinā€™ evil at least Regine uses actual workout machines to train Camille
