thinking more about authorial insecurity in fiction... it truly is frustrating to me when an author is clearly ashamed of their own premises, or is preemptively responding to imagined criticism. this is where you get a lot of unfunny humor about how stupid genre conventions are and how Unrealistic fantastical/speculative elements are. like ultimately the reason that authors undercut and overexplain their own works is because they're insecure about audience reaction and want to get ahead of the haters by proclaiming that they're Not Cringe. this will not work because I, the ultimate hater, will eventually find them and make one million posts about how much I despise irony poisoning

it's funny to me to watch people speculating if another company can makes the inevitable Baldur's Gate 4 and have it turn out to be a good game, like the first two games in the series weren't total bangers

#I'm not trying to rep hasbro/wotc #because I equally believe that if anyone can find a way to destroy the golden goose that fell into their lap #they can #but I do think there are a lot of other companies that could make a very solid successor to bg3 #the real question lies on if hasbro/wotc will actually give them a chance to flex their creative muscles #which from what I know of hasbro specifically #whewy #I think even if larian did promise to make bg4 it wouldn't be the same commercial/critical success #because I know the suits at hasbro are going to be monitoring development like a hawk #fuck the games industry larian was so wise to go their own way

not enough people are into shadowheart/nocturne and it makes me feel insane. like what do you MEAN shadowheart used to beat up people who deadnamed nocturne. what do you MEAN shadowheart would frequently have her memories wiped, but nocturne could get her to remember nocturne in a matter of HOURS if not minutes, and would write on her diary about how happy it'd make her to see the expression on shadowheart's face when she remembered? what do you MEAN that if you give shadowheart the noblestalk, a mushroom so rare and potent there is only ONE of them in the entire game, she doesn't remember her parents or the day with the wolves or the mother superior's name but just nocturne? what do you MEAN nocturne was the one who did shadowheart's hair, and she kept at it until her arms were sore, and even without remembering that at all shadowheart still kept the same canonically hard to redo hairstyle? did shadowheart even like night orchids before their hideout, or did they become her favorite flowers because they were there? were they even actually her favorite flowers, or did she just mix up her attachment to nocturne with attachment to the flowers after forgetting her? hello? hello? can anybody hear me????

The fact that Karlach calls herself “momma K” and the fact that when she finds that little hopscotch drawing in the blighted village, she sings the little song and the fact that she has a favorite teddy bear and the fact that any time one of the companions is faced with an impossible choice or adversity, her first reaction is to protect and defend - it just makes me love her more. If you recruit her before Wyll, she immediately forgives him and asks you to let him stay despite him having hunted her for so long. She’s so kind, she’s so fun and she loves with everything she has despite having her heart literally and metaphorically ripped from her chest by someone she cared for. She tells you she loves you, even if you don’t romance her. I fucking love this character and I think about her all the time - about how it’s so easy to be bad and angry and hardened and, while she is very angry, she doesn’t let that stop her from being good or doing what’s right. They didn’t break her, Karlach is indestructible because of the very thing that was stolen from her - her gigantic fucking heart. She’s also incredibly wise and insightful - hearing her opinions on anything never disappoints. She is proof that “good” characters will always be compelling and I love her.
