You know… I feel so strongly that this scene is Yuki projecting, and he’s actually talking about himself and his estranged relationship with his mother and step family.

Based on what I remembered from what I had read from JP Wikipedia, it had been just him and his mother for the longest time, and ever since high school, he was prepared to be the man of the house and take care of her for life, which was also why he had always been super diligent in his studies - he wants to get a good job so his mother can live comfortably, okay? (あああああああ what is this filial piety?!)

So, when his mother broke the news to him that she’s remarrying, Yuki lost his sense of purpose (because there’s now a new man caring for her), and with another sibling on the way, he had decided on his own to cut himself off from this new family, convincing himself he wants this “freedom”. And the key point here is that his mother and the new family had ALWAYS been welcoming to Yuki, but it was Yuki himself who chose to walk this path and isolate himself.

This is really him, acknowledging that this “freedom” came at a price, and the price is that of loneliness (and he only has himself to blame for it).

And then I cry some more.
