The other day I read an article on @themessyheads blog called "Can't Call, I'm in Cuba" and basically the article was about a shocking statistic that says people check there phones an AVERAGE of 300 TIMES A DAY. That means a person checks there phone atleast every three minutes of the day. Not only was this statistic shocking for me but also for the author of this article Emma Mercury. (As it should be shocking to anyone else) Emma goes on to tell how much she accomplished in her time in Cuba due to zero cell service. "In my two weeks in Cube I had filled two journals, written all my pieces for the magazine and read about five books. And also managed to go dancing every night and to the beach every day. It seemed like I had literally too much time on my hands" (Emma). After reading this article it hit me that I had read it at just the right time. For a little while I have been really anxious and have had a hard time dealing with that and sourcing the problems causing it. As a growing artist I have been recently struggling to find my creative voice and although it sometimes seems that the easiest way out is to quit and find something more reliable to do, I know it is my job to persevere. My struggle, which is one most creative people have, should not mean we give up. One cannot create without looking deep into oneself for sources of inspiration. I have also realized how reliant I have been of my phone in order to source inspiration. Constantly searching for images I like and constantly comparing myself to other artists and art. (Even if I wasn't trying to compare, it is subconscious) I have realized as a young artist this comparing and searching for success through a virtual device lead me into an even deeper pit of creative block and anxiety. I have realized that I feel more disconnected to myself than ever before.
