It's nice to see someone else who feels the same way about mods that I do. I hate that I can have an outfit that I really like but someone modded their game, so now my character is walking around with her tits out. I honestly kind of hope that they change the way the game's files work to try and stop the mods, because of all of these.

In the beginning the mods were just something that I didn’t mind, but would never engage in myself because it’s against the ToS/ToU/ABCDEFG (I’M A GOOD BOY!!!). It was interesting to see people put eyebrows on their highlanders, I chuckled at the Roegadyn who wanted body hair, and the seemingly overwhelming need for male nipples so many players had. Their issue if they got caught, not mine – and even then, I didn’t think much of it because it didn’t seem like the kind of thing they’d even bother to crack down on. All good, yeah? At that time I found out that the changes show up for everyone with the same model, but it didn’t bother me, those mods were harmless, and it was still mostly a quiet affair.

Then things started to explode a bit, people posting screenshots of their modded characters all over the place. It made me raise an eyebrow, but – it was still harmless, you know? I found out that the nude mods existed and rolled my eyes some. The flood of screenshots increased to the point of being a bit overbearing. I understood that there were SEVERAL individuals, all excited about their mods, and even if each of them posted a couple screenshots it’d amount to quite a bit. That reasoning inspired some patience…but then it started to become the ONLY content some people posted. All the cool gear in game, all the locations, the battle stuff – replaced by titty and ass mods EVERYWHERE. Both on females, ass on males because the dick mod wasn’t a thing yet.

Then it became a thing. Those balloon animal dicks that just kind of looked way awkward to me. It was…boggling, but STILL I was like, to each his own, I guess. Personally I thought that it was getting to the point where the beautiful graphics of the game were being made awkward and jarring by the appearance of them, but honestly if that’s what people wanted who the hell was I to complain? Then the absolute avalanche of dick-modded screenshots started coming down. It was…exasperating, for a bit because as much as I love me some dick none of the screenshot stuff was particularly appealing? The mod was in its first iteration and honestly looked like one of those long balloons. Life went on though. 

I noticed the clothing mods after that. That’s where things started to creep me out a little. It was just an open jacket here, a missing shirt there…but then I saw what had been done to the Immortal Flames loincloth for casters…and frowned. A few other items of clothing showed similar exposure, the Shisui stuff comes to mind. I didn’t like that. I didn’t like the idea of people just watching my character with a modded dick out if I chose to wear a certain piece of gear. It might sound silly to some, but the discomfort was genuine and instinctive. Almost intuitive. And then it happened. Someone sent me a screenshot of one of my roes with body hair and his dick out in Shisui gear. I think at that point I went from being somewhat exaggerated by the mods to being completely against them. I very firmly told the person who did it not to send me that stuff, and they’ve since obliged. But the damage was done. 

Every week I see new versions of modded gear – I was even shocked to see the mog station gear out as a mod before the actual item was available for purchase. The very day the item dropped it was modded. The Ul’Dahn tunic is open in front. The snow outfit. The Thancred top. SO many clothing items have been modded to expose the body and I feel myself running out of options to avoid feeling like some creeper somewhere is ogling my pixels and hoarding screenshots. It’s paranoia, yes – but honestly the fact that I have reason to feel this way is just ridiculous. It’s at the point where I’m actually hoping they crack down on it, because right now the indiscretions and discomfort severely outweigh the intrigue and happiness of seeing people with eyebrows/stubble/bare feet. And this is coming from a guy who has no problem with sexual content – where it belongs. That is, not in people’s faces every few minutes. I’m a porn artist y’all. I know how it is. Just…for the love of god exercise some restraint. It’s exciting. I understand. I know. Some folks want people to see. That’s cool. But that needs to be controlled to some extent. 

Keep in mind that I don’t think using the sexy mods makes a player a bad person. It’s a risk, sure, but it’s their risk to take. Do your thang, take your sessy screens of YOUR character, for YOURSELF (and other consenting parties I suppose). It’s just that the potential for exploitation and unsavory behavior is far too much for me to just smile through.

i think “i wish platonic dates with friends were a thing” is another way of saying “i want a deep emotional intimacy.” it’s a new age. shallow friends are easy to find and hard to let go. the two of you can sit for coffee, talking about nothing, secretly texting under the table that you want to leave. she begs you to come to the party but abandons you once you’re through the door. he won’t talk to you outside of class, won’t even look at you even though two weeks ago you kissed. 

it’s the age of the internet and our empathy is evolving. yes, isn’t long-distance now so easy. there’s a lot we have to be thankful for.

but there’s a lot that’s changing. there’s no words for the emotion you feel when someone is taking a picture with you that you know is only happening because they want to look fun and popular and you’re a prop; there’s no word for when you know it’s because you’re uglier than them and it makes them look good - there’s no word for watching people socialize for social media credit. we know it happens. not just “hang on let me take a picture of my food.” not just “i’ve got to text my mom back, one sec.” i mean that strange distance between two people who comment on each other’s posts but cannot connect in person. i mean you pour out your soul on twitter but then clam up in person. i mean internet loneliness; the sensation of 212 thousand followers and still so empty, knowing if the plane goes down, the ocean of the internet will wash out your memory.

it’s hard, sometimes. finding a best friend. when i was little i had an assignment about it. i remember crying in the hallway because i didn’t have one. everyone else in class did. i wrote about my shadow. i didn’t fit in. over the years i’ve had a couple. one turned out pure evil. a few were my best friend but i wasn’t theirs, in the end. a lot just drifted from me until we were only friends by nostalgia, not connection. but i ached for the feeling of a best friend the whole time: the person you can be silent with, the person you can be wild with, the person you can be 100% yourself with.

we live in a society where romance is said to be the only space you’re allowed to really be close with someone. how many of us have said to make sure you marry your best friend. we know from dating that there exists a kind of connection we don’t always get in our friends - even a platonic one, a connection of spirit, a freedom of behavior. 

i get it. a platonic date sounds wonderful. it’s not hurting anybody. let’s both have three seconds where we’re honest with each other in a raw kind of way. it’s terrifying. or we could just talk about what’s bothering you. i’m also still fucked up about the avatar: the last airbender ending; i also don’t get katara and aang. 

it’s about trust. about vulnerability. so yeah. maybe i’ve done all kinds of platonic-date things. but i’ve also had the opposite happen: the non-friend. someone you don’t want to cut out, not necessarily - but not someone you can tell your secrets to in the end. i think what we’re all asking for is to be less lonely. we want to get close to people, but we don’t want to seem like we’re hitting on somebody. 

come on out with me. we’ll both dress up and drink wine and split the bill and talk about deep things. be best friends for a moment. lord knows i need one. what i’m asking is for a quick moment of emotional intimacy. of reality. of not-just-here-for-the-party. i think a date sounds lovely.

Nice to know that my very sick and disabled wife is PRIVILEGED because most vegetables actually make her super sick and could potentially hospitalize her because her digestive system is so messed up. I guess she should just starve, huh.

And which bothers you more - vegans promoting a way of life that is just and peaceful and sustainable, but usually includes a diet your wife is sadly unable to commit to fully, or healthy and able kids using your wife as an excuse as to why they’re not vegan? I guess it comes down to your opinion of veganism, and has little to do with your wife.
