A real nice commission this one, a freshly launched fishing boat (the Karearea) out for her sea tests. This is the sort of work I love, out in the elements with an eye towards showing off Whangarei’s awesome landscape.

"it's not a photo until it's a print"
40,000 photos and no idea what to do next? over the last 3 months i've taken my first mentor role with a recently retired gent, a most rewarding experience, one i loved.
i've taken him through the basics of editing, image selection and developing (lightroom & photoshop) printing and framing to his first exhibition which is on now at the shutter room (the old library) check out his exhibition here or pop down to check it in the real: https://www.ianbuttphotography.co.nz/index/G0000eE06Navch8U (oh, and I made his website as well :)
if you are in the same situation as my gent, or just stuck, feel free to get in touch for a chat, you too can get there!

a few of the images from my recent commission at whangarei’s marsden point for ISO. i love getting into new environments to see how people go about their work and play. even if there is a bit of pressure in getting the shot in a limited time frame, i relish the challenge and the results are invariably there for all to see. here’s to more of this! :)

From a recent trip to Dunedin. Tunnel Beach is a stunning local beach (who new Dunners had them!?) with a great hook tragic story of folly and drowned daughters. But it’s (probably) not true. (https://adventure.nunn.nz/2015/12/18/tunnel-beach-and-the-legend-of-cargills-drowned-daughter/).
The old fella with the walking stick i love and i can see a racoon in the rock, Tunnel Beach is one of those magnificent kiwi beaches. Like Piha or Ocean Beach in Northland it will just pull me back for more :)

A lot of people ask if i ‘do’ weddings or “you should do weddings!” and i always say no! i don’t do weddings. But ... if you like a documentary style (i’ll be in the background but i’ll be front and center if you need it) something a bit gritty, original (truthful?) and with lashings of black and white, perhaps we should talk ...

Well, my 2018 calendar is out. it’s the 5th edition of this labour of love which celebrates Whangarei’s awesome coast and culture. This year’s calendar features images from Waipu to Ohawini with a good dose of the Heads in between.
It’s the perfect gift for overseas friends and family, a great reminder of home. You can purchase your copy online here or from these local stockists if you are local: Tuatara Design Store, Reyburn House, The Bach, Book Inn, Matakana Art, Tutakaka Surf, Onerahi Chemist, The Deck, GAS Parua Bay, Good Food and Newday Cafe. I think that’s all of them!

an example of my commission work. this time greg who has been a loyal employee of fastway couriers for 20 years, rare in this day and age. his companion brutus tags along most days, both a pleasure to work with!

trying to get the feel of that huge vault of sky that overwhelms the heads. weird growing up in the city, you never really get to see the sky. love the blues in this and you could get it printed as big as you like :)
