Sometimes it really just be like… august 13th, 1961, a wall was erected down the middle of the city of Berlin, the world was divided by a cold war and the berlin wall was the most hated symbol of that war, reviled, gratified, spit upon, we thought the wall would stand forever and now that its gone, we dont know who we are!! Ladies and gentlemen!! Hedwig is like that wall, standing before you in the great divide between east and west, slavery and freedom, man and woman, top and bottom, and you can try to tear her down but before you do, you must remember one thing,,,, yaknow?
theatre opinion: if deh hires a poc person into the cast that doesn't just play alana and make it so there would be more than one poc character, then that would be glorious. absoluteley glorious. it'd be even more glorious if said poc cast member played evan, the lead. you know, the most iconic and important character.
YES! YES! 100%. deh is such a beautiful show, and evan hansen was the first time i really saw myself truly represented in a character on stage. i remember that being such an amazing feeling. and everyone should be able to feel that! i remember kristolyn lloyd saying she wanted to play heidi hansen in a revival of the show in 15 years or something, and honestly? that would be so incredible. but it’d be even more incredible if that kind of casting happened right now.
teenage boys in general are very rarely shown in movies or theatre or tv as having the vulnerability and sensitivity and forgivability that evan has, especially moc and even more especially black boys specifically. there are so many talented poc in broadway who really don’t get a chance to shine b/c so many musicals and plays are still overwhelmingly white, and that needs to change. deh is such an amazing show and i know it would be so much better and so much more meaningful if it was more diverse. glorious.
