It makes me really sad that even in such a safe space as women's football, players can support such statements and we all know exactly how it ends. She'll refer to her faith and say she's sorry that people feel offended by the videos she posted. I can already see Emma saying that this situation shouldn't be judged too harshly because she is a very young player and is allowed to make mistakes. Besides, you have to separate sport and politics 🤡(every time I read this sentence I have to think of this brilliant column by Magda, clearly a must-read in my opinion for those who haven't).
I feel sorry for every queer American player, especially those who are still in the closet and afraid. Emma's statements were already harmful. When players like Albert aren't sanctioned for it, the environment doesn't get any more pleasant. I am really missing Pinoe in the USWNT right now...
I fully agree!
And here's the column for everyone who wants to read it (again):
Here is that article from the Champions Journal magazine (ldk if people have already seen it). You just need to make an account to read it in full.
Great, thank you! As always a good read because they know the bigger picture and are talking about different matters so wisely.
There is no doubt both would have loved to play the Olympic Games. But there is also no doubt that a summer off will be good for their bodies. It's obvious from how they talk about the schedules. And they are right about that. Tournaments should be played earlier in the summer so that they can have several weeks off afterwards. Vacation before a big tournament is no real vacation. But...there are men's tournaments and they come first. Literally. Sadly.
