Plan
I am choosing option 3 for my final dissertation/ practice assessment:  3) A substantial practice-based research activity augmented by a 2000 word critical reflection.
August;          Identify key areas of research to take forward into practical work.
1st - 15th September;    Create outline sketches and notes which include media,  methods, and any outside resources required to create initial mock up trials of practical work. Create a file of notes and photos to keep records of my process throughout.   Discuss ideas with lecturer
15th September - 15th October ;    Collate sketches, notes and materials, start making. Review progress on 1st October. Is the work meeting the requirements of the brief? Is the work reflecting the concepts I want to convey in my topic? Am I on schedule, are there challenges needing addressed? What are the strong points so far? Review with lecturer
15th October - 30th November; Continue making altering and adjusting where necessary and in line with points raised when reviewing my work so far. Identify areas that are working best and take forward into more refined mock up models. Review with lecturer.
1st December - 15th January ; Collate materials for final artwork. review and prepare all aspects required to complete work ; studio space, collaboration, information, and technologies/technicians. Make the final artwork outcomes.
15th January - February 8th    Write a critical reflection of my work.
8th February - 14th February   Review all work for submission

Nerves and muscles of the mouth. Leonardo da Vinci
I have chosen this image for several reasons. It proves the enduring relationship between art and science. It is by one of the greatest artists known. It, and many other pieces of Da Vinci's works have contributed to the greater discoveries in science which resulted in more effective healing modalities for human maladies. Also I have a friend who is both a speech therapist and a dentist so it could be possible me to create a collaboration with her .

I have chosen this image from Haseltines Futurenatural series, as her methods of exhibiting are ones I would like to explore . Heseltine has used glass to depict microscopic images in human scale. These are placed in a ceremonial way in natural settings and are performance pieces bringing awareness to ecological challenges. This way of working with ceremony and performance to exhibit art and science artwork appeals to me. I could combine my exploration into interdisciplinary art with my existing practice of communicating and recording in nature.

Olson, L., 2020. Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory Residency — Lindsay Olson - Art And Science. [online] Lindsay Olson - Art and Science. Available at: <https://www.lindsayolsonart.com/portfolio-2/project-three-4535y> [Accessed 13 August 2020].
I have picked this work by Lyndsay Olson becuase it is an dream of mine to be able to have an artists residency at Cern. I am fascinated by the work at Cern I don’t know that I feel comfortable with the potential risks of it, however it is an incredible work of exploration to make the invisible visible, it requires a level  intelligence and steadfastness that I do not have. I like the way Olson has responded to her time in Cern , she knows what she doesn’t know and keeps asking questions to the scientists until she gets the details correct. The artwork is obviously about the technological and scientific world of Cern while still maintaining its essence as a aesthetic work of art. I am looking at this as a resource to help me maintain this delicate balance in my work. When I look at Olson's artwork I am reminded to pay attention to detail, get the facts right, communicate and use integrity .

These are some of my own images. To create them I built layers for visual effect in a glass slide. the base layers are ink, some are purposely photographed when wet as the heat from the microscopic camera creates condensation, movement and bubbles. Then I placed stigma and stamen from a rose on top. One slide has a top layer of scratched acrylic and one of melted acrylic. Then I photographed them with a microscopic cheap usb camera
As a  result I got interesting and likable images and it is something anyone could do as an artist starting to explore the science world and their technologies as inspiration. Effective simple and interesting methods to use in my practice are vital at the moment I do not think it will be possible to have access to scientific collaboration due to Covid19, although I am hoping to obtain resources from a dentist friend. With covid 19 restrictions ongoing I foresee having to continue developing my own simple methods of producing  interdisciplinary artwork.

Seccombe, E., 2014. Experiencing Nature In The Fifth Dimension. [online] Ted Talks. Available at: <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_8-OGyAILxk> [Accessed 13 August 2020].
Seccombes use of the words ‘fifth dimension’ in the title and during the talk seem out of context and not scientifically accurate, which is a pity because her work as an artist exploring the best technologies and methods to obtain visuals of the inside and outside of a plant at the moment of germination, is groundbreaking for  science and art. If Seccombe had said this image is representative of your imaginations capacity to visualise a fifth dimensional event, then it might have made more sense to me. The potential to start visualising 5th dimensional space through art, science, technology and language really excites me it feels to me that we are right on the cusp of change in this respect. I was interested that Seccombe put a lot of consideration and effort into how to make her  work available to the public. This is so important and perhaps not an aspect that scientists alone would fulfill, this is a role of bridging between art and science worth investigation.

This enlightened man John Nash Ott brought innovative scientific research about light and its influence on human health and wellbeing to the world. The work came from a man who worked as a banker, but maintained a lifelong interest in photography developing new technologies for camera work and experimenting with time-lapse photography. It was his combined passion for the artistry of photography and cinematography of plants that led him to explore the effects of light on living organisms. When I watch this and think about John Otts work I sense a freedom of flow within his artistic process he was able to just expand and explore without limits . I don’t feel that we are encourage to expand like this nowadays. Everything seems separated out ie if you are banker you cannot possibly be a photographer at least not an innovative competent one! Then there’s health and safety regulations squashing everything into one mold.  I feel that I hold myself back from my natural desire to flow this way when  experimenting and expanding my practice . I am conscious looking at this video, of amazing interdisciplinary work, that Ott had a sense of artistic freedom that allowed things to unfold naturally. I feel this sense of freedom is part of the reason artist can act as a bridge between disciplines. I want to identify the traits that allow art to bridge disciplines in response to my topic, but also to personally cultivate in my art process, as I often get caught in a science based methodology which stifles my creativity.

Bogatz, T., 2017. 11 Fascinating Artists Inspired By Science - The Art Of Education University. [online] The Art of Education University. Available at: <https://theartofeducation.edu/2017/10/26/11-fascinating-artists-inspired-science/> [Accessed 13 August 2020].
I have chosen this article as I am interested in interdisciplinary art education in its widest sense; my personal education , the cooperative and individual education of all who collaborate together, education within the wider community and formal establishment education. This article is directed as a resource for  teachers in schools. The article is offering resources to help  teachers to explore interdisciplinary art further with their students. The artists chosen by Timothy Bogatz for the articticle work in a diverse range of media,  and collaborate with scientists from many disciplines from neurology to entomology. He has included established artists like Hockney and Seurat who we might not have associated as artists working with science in their process. This article helps me to know that there is an extensive, stimulating and highly regarded body of art and science artwork for me to research and take inspiration from for my own practice. Although the art science collaboration is still not  fully established for artists , it’s definitely not a new idea and there is plenty of material, historical and contemporary ,for me to explore from artists in this field .
