What keeps Game Freak’s non-Pokemon projects from performing well?

They're generally okay games with nothing super duper special to them?

Honestly, it's just that Pokemon is what we call "Lightning in a Bottle".

If Nintendo ultimately doesn’t need Game Freak to make a new Pokemon game and they wanted to transition to 3D in the graphics department, then why didn’t they just hand development over to people whose expertise was in 3D RPGs? Not only would it probably make development go smoother and skip any potential growing pains, but they could let Game Freak work on a new project to expand their horizons and let them be known for more than just Pokemon.

They keep making new projects, they keep floundering, or under performing.

And probably there's some legal requirement that Game Freak makes new entries, as they're the original creators.

At this point, they've transitioned decently over to 3D, the bigger issue is you can only do so much in 3-4 years of dev time on a game the scale of a Pokemon game, and for whatever reason they don't seem to be super huge on simply following iterative behavior these days.

The issue is ultimately "really really good games these days cannot be made in 3-4 years especially at the scale of Pokemon, without sacrificing a lot."

If Game Freak’s wheelhouse was pixel games, then why not keep doing pixel games and refining their craft in that along the way? They didn’t use 3D graphics in the DS games even though that console could showcase 3D graphics unlike the GBA. The only major gimmick that the 3DS introduced was stereoscopic 3D and I don’t think having 2D sprites would make it any less noticeable than it would be in a game with polygons. It could have even helped to set Pokemon apart from the competition in the same way the Megaman X games were set apart from PS1 competitors by sticking to a refinement of pixel art instead of going 3D.

Probably pressure from Nintendo and leadership at The Pokemon Company with the 3DS to switch to a 3D format to show off the power of Stereoscopic 3D, along with public desire for a 3D game.

Also most of Game Freak's staff IIRC considered Black-White to be the limits of what they could achieve with a 3D game.

Game Freak doesn't own the rights to Pokemon.

Thoughts on the Tistina archetype?

I like it. It's probably a little clumsy but I'm a sucker for high Level/Rank themes, Trap Monsters, and Cosmic Horror themes.

I'm curious what the OCG will add to it when it hits Japanese Shores.

And on a completely different note if Yugioh has such a bad reputation for villainizing adults etc why make Sevens so adult unfriendly?

Not impossible, but I think they're running on a general 'tournament that grants your wish' gimmick of which I'm not sure which is the first, but there's probably a 'genetic ancestor'.

@ Sevens: And because the big complaint by the owners is adults hijacked the franchise and it needs to go back to tweens. It needs to be aged back down.

Why do you think the people behind Horizons made it so that the people doing the Terastal Course don’t have to win their respective battles against their Gym Leader in order to pass?

Probably so Liko and Roy can prove they've at least grown but they're still pretty much hatchlings still trying to learn their way around the world and show these Gym Leaders are actually tough.

I really don't see this accusation of misogyny

His problem is he's high on his supply as a (self) perceived authority figure, and he lacks any of the elegance or grace that Gakuto tries to have, so he comes off as an overly dismissive douchebag.

Like his recent Duel with Epoch at least, he has a point that up until Epoch gets her shit together, she's a person of poor moral character and he's the most competent person to be running the ship

With Yuamu, he dismisses her because he literally can't see reality.

Vs. Yuna in their rematch, it's because he has the reasonable accusation of wanting to drag in a Person of Interest, while Yuna is willing to compromise a huge situation for her self perceived love life.

The overall problem is Manabu is an ENORMOUS tool with a belligerent personality.

What do you think of the Malicevorous archetype?

They're visually kind of neat in a cheesy way but holy shit they have nothing going on other than 'summon Number 96: Dark Mist', not every anything to support the two Xyz once they're summoned.

If we ever get a follow-up on them for a Dark Mist Deck, hopefully they make them work so you can also bring out the other Chaos Numbers Dark Must used.

In addition to the hand signs and chants, Sukuna must also manually direct the trajectory of any world cutting slash he uses with his hand, which begs the question: when fighting Kashimo, exactly how much work did he have to do to make him the waffled one and what made him think Kashimo was worth it?

I'm like months behind and I keep being put off because friends keep complaining how this writing is approaching Ninja World War or Thousand Year Blood War arc tier writing, so I have no opinions on Sukuna, other than GeGe peaked at the Shinjuku Incident.

Why were contests being phased out of the Pokemon games instead of being further expanded upon and developed?

Who knows, Game Freak develops a lot of cool side content or QoL stuff and then just throws it in a trash can and lights it on fire.

My honest guess is it wasn't viable to continue into the 3D era because Game Freak is a studio that specialized in Pixel Games, not 3D games, and 3D games have to be a lot less deep if you only have 3 years to develop.

Also, the like two top guys at Game Freak just seemed to go 'there's no point in any effort or post game or side content with mobile phone games and gacha existing.' along with the development crunch.

Game Freak has always struck me as INCREDIBLY resentful that Pokemon has been their one and only success as a studio.

Your opinion on the first episode of the Terastal Debut arc?

It was fine.

I think it did a good justification/segue into this probably 1 to 2 cour Terastal training arc and setting up Those Two Guys from the Explorers being the sitcom arch nemeses of the arc.

Chiri having a hick accent was not what I expected.

But I otherwise liked what they did.
